Library Set For Major Makeover

Monday January 27 2014

WOMBWELL Library is set to undergo a £500,000 renovation.

The construction of an extension will provide more space for community groups and volunteers to use.

The involvement of community groups and volunteers at the library isn't a new initiative, but the additional space will provide capacity to attract new users and run more events.

A recent review of community buildings identified the library as the most suitable community hub for Wombwell given its proximity to public transport.

Cllr Alan Gardiner, cabinet spokesperson for corporate services, said: "It will provide an excellent addition to community life in Wombwell and I hope local residents will make good use of it.

"This work demonstrates our commitment to the library service and making it easier for people to access services."

The extension will include an 80 square metre room that can be split into two smaller rooms, a drop-in office space for use by the area team and separate toilets.

The extension could then be used for activities such as after school clubs, slimming clubs, dance groups and a polling station.

Solar panels on the roof will reduce the building's carbon footprint, and mobility parking and a pick-up point will be provided outside the main entrance.

The works will be funded by money raised through the sale of surplus assets, such as the Bondfield Centre and Wombwell Town Hall.

A start date for the works will be confirmed in the near future.

There will be some disruption to car parking and normal library operation while the work takes place, but these will be minimised as much as is possible.

Can anyone read in Wombwell? I know they can steal, rob, mug and inject. What a hole.

How many free parking spaces will this redevelopment take from the original car park

What the point I was trying to make is. how many more car parking spaces lost will cost local bussines

Oh my word. Some people.
Yes, wombwell has it's fair share of toerags but so does every community. Why should that stop the development of projects like this for the majority of people in the town who aren't appreciative of it? The amount of people who will benefit from it greatly outweights the number of 'drug dealers and their cronies'. I think it's fantastic.
Yes, it's unfortunate that some of the free parking spaces may be lost but the fact that we have free parking at all is something to be appreciated, a lot of places don't.

I think we should actually be thankful that our library is extending and not closing like so many others are. There is a huge car park metres away, it won't hurt to walk a little further!!

The Alma carpark is well big enough plus spaces behind the library yet on a daily basis cars seem to think the car park is the high street n continue to create havoc for buses and lorries who need clear access through!!! Good to hear that the library is getting new life injected into it :)
