Hundreds Sign Racecommon Road Petition

Monday January 27 2014

OVER 500 concerned residents have signed a petition questioning the safety of Racecommon Road.

Support for the 'Let's Make Racecommon Road Safe' has rocketed in the last month, with 1,600 members on its Facebook page.

Shelley Love, of nearby St Edward's Avenue, started the group.

She said: "Enough is enough and we want Barnsley Council to act. Making it a 20mph zone would reduce accidents.

"People speed to beat the traffic lights. Having a camera on top would deter people from doing so."

The page was created after Reece Leo Parkinson-Cole, seven, had to be airlifted to hospital with serious injuries to his head and a broken right leg after being hit by a car in December.

Just a year before, Neil Wilcock, 52, was struck by a driver racing at speeds of up to 50mph in the 30mph residential estate and now needs 24-hour care.

Scott McManis, 21, who hit Mr Wilcock, was jailed for 34 months.

* Police confirmed that the female driver who hit Reece wasn't speeding and was driving carefully. No charges have been brought against her.

less cars parked at the side of the road would be a start

Traffic wardens patrolling the road would prevent drivers parking on the pavements.Unfortunately they're all too busy hanging around Market Hill waiting to pounce!

Permit parking only!
Zebra crossing where the lollipop man stands for when hes not there!

It's not people speeding it's the people who live on racecommen road they all park on and off the curb I drive down it everyday and roads are meant for driving on but racecommen road is more like a car park. And badly parked at that double yellow it all way down that would be a start

Learning the green cross code first would be a start. Then realising it is a busy through road and not a cul de sac and what is all that clap trap about speeding to beat the lights? Last time I checked they were at either end of the road and no different to any other lights in the area? Maybe look at what the actual causes of these accidents were instead of just randomly suggesting one of everything. I'm sure the council have people that analyse this stuff??
You might live there but the thousands of us law abiding people that use this road also pay road tax to drive along it without being subjected to speed humps day in day out. If speeding is so bad maybe you should get police to pull their finger out a stand at the side of the road with their radar guns and do some speed checks and apprehend these hells angels or more likely school run mothers and teach them a lesson?
Failing that you could always go and live in a field where it's nice and quiet !

Fred- What a facetious comment.

You moaning gits residents of Racecommon Road.. Parking outside houses on the road happens in most areas of the universe. If a car is taxed and road legal then you may park anywhere as long are there is no restrictions.. if you want to park outstde your front door then bloody move and get a drive..

Been devils advocate, looking at this mathematically I wonder how many cars use this road a day? Possibly 10,000 in 24 hours? So, 500 have signed the petition and probably 200 of them probably didn't know what they were signing, signed it to get away from you or were family and friends who don't even live round there but felt obliged?? So actually probably more like 300 local residents are genuine signators (if your lucky) !
By my calculation that is only actually 3% of road users who are kicking up a fuss. So I say if we get speed cushions as a result of this petition the rest of us motorists kick up a fuss and vote out labour at the next elections!!! :-)

Labour will always win votes in Barnsley, you could have a chimp standing for labour here and people would vote for it. Even though they have done absolutely nothing for this town. But lots of people are thick. and that is how the government like it.

I completely agree Jayne.

The speed of drivers, in close proximity to pedestrians and parked vehicles causes many problems on many roads. Racecommon Road is not realistically that long, reducing the speed limit by 20 MPH signs that operate at peak times would help and would only increase overall journey times by a few seconds. The vast majority of motorists would comply with this. Jayne, how exactly does the present government like the electorate of Barnsley voting Labour when they are a Tory lead government? Your comment makes no sense! To suggest that your town has returned Labour MPs and that they have done nothing for the town is wrong and is insulting to the people and history of the borough. You should be proud of this town, it's history and it's people we are not thick!!!!

Seems to happen a lot when there are roadworks on Dodworth Road, drivers coming off the M1 go through Kingston & down to town that way

Yes, it's a very busy rd, some people need educating on driving, some on crossing the rd, result ...harmony. Proceed with caution!

The solution is not to add more 'calming measures' it is for people to be aware that other people exist. Use the crossings, yes it may mean walking a little further but would you rather walk an extra few hundred yards or rely on 24/7 care. I crossed this road nearly every day 2-5 times a day for 5 years while at school and i have never been run over.

Turning left or right onto Racecommon Road from Pitt St West is a nightmare.
You have to drive a snail’s pace as you can’t see what’s coming down the road because of all the parked cars on the corner.
