Barnsley Has Another Centenarian!

Wednesday January 22 2014

LAURA Gregory is now 100 years old!

She marked the milestone on Friday and was taken out for a celebratory lunch on Saturday.

Laura lives with her son Michael on Challenger Crescent, Thurnscoe, and also has three daughters, June Rose, Irene McCombe and Carol Bedford-Gay.

She said: "It's been nice to see all the family together."

Laura was born in Pontefract before her family moved to Highgate where they lived on a smallholding.

She remembers how her father was forced to work down the pit after the army took away their horses to be used in the war.

Laura worked in Marks and Spencer in Huddersfield for about four years before being transferred to the Barnsley store where she was promoted to floor manager.

She left when she married husband Stanley in 1940.

They had met some months earlier at a bus stop and Stanley went to the cinema with Laura and her relatives after missing the bus to Doncaster.

The couple were married for 58 years until Stanley died in July 1998, aged 80.

Laura liked getting out when she was able to and also enjoyed embroidery.

Now she enjoys seeing her friends at Age UK Barnsley Day Centre at Hunningley Grange Care Home, which she has attended for eight years.

She also enjoys her garden, which Michael has won awards for, and watching Heartbeat.

Laura has seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Happy 100th, Laura!
