Drivers Warned About Kids' Chicken Game With Buses

Tuesday January 21 2014

DRIVERS have been warned after children played the dare game 'chicken' in front of buses.

Stagecoach put out the message after youngsters ran out in front of a service 226 bus on Merrill Road, Thurnscoe, on January 11.

Those involved in the game attempt to avoid being struck, with vehicles missing by a matter of inches.

John Young, of Stagecoach, said: "One of our drivers operating reported that children had been spotted running across the road in front of buses.

"The safety of our passengers, drivers and the public is of great importance to us, so we contacted all our vehicles in the area to inform our drivers of this hazard."

Cllr Jennifer Worton said her main concern was that if the children enjoyed the game then they will want to play it again and may well bring more friends to play next time.

She said: "I'm sure that road safety is still taught at the schools in the area.

"If the police were not made aware of it by Stagecoach then I will tell them.

"I don't think children realise how fast buses go and how they take a while to stop."

A spokesman said Barnsley Council was liaising with the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership and Stagecoach about the problem.

He said: "Appropriate schools will then be approached to discuss the issue and suitable road safety lessons will be offered, in particular pedestrian training.

"The team will acquire support from the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership if additional resources are required."

What is wrong with kids nowadays? They should have cameras kn the front of the buses and release the photos of the children so their parents will see and hopefully discipline them.

All stagecoach buses have cameras. 1 at the front 1 at the back 1 either side and several inside.
It isn't just kids that play chicken with a buses.

Young mums with pushchairs and other road users do it.

They see a car coming they wait they see a bus coming and make a dash for it.

My point is why should kids see it as a danger.
After all they have probably watched there parents and other road user do it.

Parents from Merrill Road disciplining their children? They were probably egging them on and filming it on their prehistoric Blackberry phones to get a payout from You've Been Framed!

Disgusting kids playin chicken but stage coach needs to also tell their drivers about playin chicken with other rd users bullyin other cars to mount curbs when its the cars right of way or just stoppin in the middle of the street coz they can't b arsed to pull into the bus bay they think they own the road. the speed some of them go is bound to b trouble its time the drivers ad tacko graffs in the buses so they can see how much they speed bloody disgusting

Good point but I think it's 50 / 50 on that matter.
Anyway that's getting away from the matter of chicken.

One more thing. What speed do you think the buses are travelling at. Out of curiosity?

Drivers are linked back to a computer system that codes their driving. Harsh braking, speeding etc all flags and the quality of their driving all shows back at the office. So wouldnt imagine you would get many buses speeding as they are closely monitored. The point is the children are risking there lives and also reaking havoc with people that are trying to do their jobs

The point is if the children are not stopped or warned by their parents some driver will most likely have a child's death to live with for the rest of his or her life AND A FAMILIE WILL BE WITH OUT A CHILD. WARN YOUR CHILD NOT TO DO IT

I take it you reported the mentioned bus drivers to stagecoach? People are too quick to point their fingers at drivers. Im not saying all drivers drive as they should but whenever theres a report about a bus it always gets back round to someone slating the drivers even when the report has nothing to do about the drivers as in this case. Both my mum and brother are stagecoach drivers and the amount of hassle and disrespect they get from some passengers is diabolical and totally unnecessary x

Hahaha I love it people who havnt even got a licence on abart buses speeding and bullying hahaha if it wasn't for idiot car drivers on the road we wouldn't have to park in the middle of the road to let people on and off the bus .... and until you do a job like this then don't comment as you people have no idea what crap we have to do everyday ... It's you car drivers that see a bus and just HAVE to beat it out at a junction or roundabout or have to overtake it you people are the danger not the buses .... The buses are monitored for driving standards so people need to get facts straight before coming on here mouthing about sumat they don't even have a clue about !!

Bus drivers need to be educated on how to pull into a bus stop. The back side hangs out at an angle and you cant see round the bus causing queueing traffic behind..

Back end stuck in road? Take a look at the cars parked over the lines at both ends of the stop. Pulling in after a car means we need around double the length of the bus, a space which the drivers of this town just will not leave. The "good" people of this town and their attitude to public transport has been in decline for a good few years now and I couldn't wait to retire because of it. The amount of rubbish left on the seats and floor made me fear for the state of people's homes. And then at the first mention of buses all the keyboard warriors emerge with an axe to grind. The last year my resounding thought has been, 'If ignorance is bliss then this town is amongst the happiest in the land.' Oh well, no more if it for me. Huzzah!!
