Man Jailed For Life After Killing Wife And Daughter

Thursday January 16 2014

A MAN has been jailed for life after killing his wife and daughter.

Peter Redfern, 70, from Wath-upon-Dearne, called the police on July 22 claiming to have killed his wife Jean, 67, and their daughter Sarah, 33.

The two women were found with plastic bags over their heads that had been secured with electrical flex.

A post mortem revealed that Jean suffered asphyxiation and Sarah died from severe head injuries.

He was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on January 16.

Redfern will serve a minimum of 17 years for the murder of his daughter and 12 years in prison, to run concurrently, for the manslaughter of his wife.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Singleton said: "Peter Redfern murdered his wife and daughter in an attack that was shocking and impossible to understand.

"Only he knows why he committed such a violent act.

"Jean and Sarah were a mother and daughter who were as close as a mother and daughter could be."

The court heard retired gas fitter Redfern had been diagnosed with a form of incurable bone cancer in May 2013.

He had signed up to a national trial for treatment with particular drug combinations.

Mr Justice Males said: "Studies have shown that in a very small percentage of cases the drugs which you took can lead to an adverse psychiatric reaction.

"When that occurs, it's generally mild or moderate but in a very small number of cases can be serious.

"Tragically, that was to prove to be so in your case."

The family of Jean and Sarah Redfern said in a statement: "The terrible events of July 2013 have left a void in our lives which will never be filled.

"We hope the conclusion of the trial will allow us to come to terms with what happened.

"We now wish to be allowed to grieve in private."

So if its the medications fault how can he be sentenced for life?...surely a secure mental hospital should have been considered?

I can't believe his medication has had no impact on his sentence, surely they can't fully blame him if he wasn't in a right state of mind due to medication! If it was purely the medication that made him do this u have to feel for him too! There are people murdering folk out there, on purpose with no excuse such as medication etc, getting half that sentence. Uk justice system strikes again

how many people have treatment for cancer and dont do this.can the medication really be blamed

His sentance is what he deserves. he murdered his wife and daughter. if the drugs were anything to do with the murders dont you think many more people would have been killed by him? being in the mindset of unknownly murdering people would have resulted in a mass killing surely!! dont feel sorry for him!

Why would a guy go and murder is wife and daughter in such tragic circumstances.
They seem the perfect family. what ever caused these events will probably be known. One thing I believe possibly with the judges summing up drugs may have caused the sad episode.

Or you could say these two people was the closest thing to him and having been diagnosed with cancer did not want to go on his own or leave them behind.

The relatives left behind will have to try and get some closure.

On thing I'm not is a medical expert but surely this guy should be in Mental Hospitial or some other treatment centre. Not Prison.

It's a very interesting but very very sad case.

He strangled his wife then he realised what he did so he waited with a hammer, electric cord and a plastic bag and waited til she came in and attacked his daughter. He planned that part. So maybe the medication played a part aswell as planning the murder of his daughter just a thought

How about this theory.
His wife didn't want to go on without him, she asked him to be the one that took her out before he went, maybe she could not face the fact that he was leaving her.

His daughter found her and and disagreed obviously, she threatens the police and this gives him a psychosis, aggravated by the drugs that he is taking and bashes her?

As the findings say this drug combination can affect people in different ways.

Its tragic, yes he killed them yes the punishment sort of fits but a review of the drugs would not go amiss as this thing could happen again.

Your theory does not make sense why would she want him to kill her when he is not near death he is strong enough to strangle her it takes a lot of strength to strangle some one that a fact and to hit his daughter over the head with a hammer that takes a lot of strength too especially for a 70yr old just a point that's all

Very sad and disturbing case.
How much did the drugs contribute to his actions? Perhaps this will never be known.
The 2 women must have been petrified, they have died such horrific deaths. I hope they are at peace now.

Sad story knowing he was dying was probably enough to send anyone over the edge and maybe he thought there was an afterlife and wanted his wife and daughter to be with him. Daft as it sounds you never know what goes through peoples heads. He is dying so knows he wont be in prison long poor family rip
