Man Charged With Thurnscoe Murder

Sunday January 29 2012

A 36-year-old man from Thurnscoe has appeared in court today - charged with the murder of Philip Alan Smith.

Gary McKeown, from Thurnscoe,  was at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court this morning.Thirty-six-year-old Philip Smith, also from Thurnscoe, was found injured in Church Street, Thurnscoe, around 4.30pm on Saturday 28 January, after a disturbance near the junction with Houghton Road. He was taken to Barnsley District General Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

A family spokesperson said: "The tragic event, where Philip was fatally stabbed, has left a huge gap in the lives of many people. Philip was a much loved member of a large family and we will never forget him.

“We have heard many rumours about what happened. We would ask that if anyone has any information about the incident to contact South Yorkshire Police as soon as possible so that justice can be done.

“We finally ask that our privacy is respected so that we can grieve in private."

Detectives have done extensive house-to-house and forensic enquiries but urge anyone with information to call 01709 443507 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
