A SEMI-RETIRED teacher laid dead in his bungalow for weeks before being discovered, an inquest was told.

Tadeusz Stefan Stawski, 59, of Cobcar Street, Elsecar, was found at his home on August 6 by police officers after his sister visited from Nottingham but got no answer.

A pathologist couldn't determine a cause of death.

Regina Stawski said she had spoke to her brother about three weeks beforehand but he then stopped answering her phone calls.

She said this wasn't unusual, but had thought he had become depressed despite being a 'cheerful' person.

He had a history of diabetes which was controlled by medication and the court heard he had previously suffered a diabetic coma.

Mr Stawski was found face down on the floor in his bedroom by police officers who forced entry following his sister's call.

PC John Matthews said: "There was a fair indication of what we were going to find because of the number of flies on the windows.

"He was in an advanced state of decomposition and had been there for some time."

The windows and doors were locked and the keys were in the inside of the door.

There were no signs of any disturbance and PC Matthews said he was satisfied what happened to Mr Stawski had not been caused by a third party.

A substantial amount of prescription medication was found, but toxicology reports were negative.

When asked if she had any questions for PC Matthews, Ms Stawski said: "I want to know how and why he died but I don't think you're going to be able to answer that for me.

"My biggest concern is that he was just laid there."

Assistant deputy coroner Julian Fox recorded a verdict of natural causes.

He told Regina: "He didn't tell you much in life and has left a number of questions in death, but I'm sure you feel his loss very much."

Sounds like Elsecar is a real neighbourly place to live, the poor guy.
