Barnsley Fans Make Long Journey Home After Match Is Postponed

BARNSLEY fans who made the long trip to Charlton were left infuriated after Saturday's match was postponed - just two hours before kick-off.

Originally scheduled for a 3pm kick-off, the Championship tie at The Valley was postponed after a 1pm inspection when referee Iain Williamson ruled that it would be unsafe to go ahead.

Barnsley manager Danny Wilson said: "It's cost the fans a lot of money to come all the way down without any warning that it might be off.

"We had no prior warning. I only heard there would be an inspection at 11.35am this morning.

"We expected it to go ahead because they've had a dome on to protect the pitch from the weather over the last ten days so we thought it would be much better.

"But it is the correct decision. The referee's got a concern about the players' safety which is paramount in anybody's eyes."

Fans took to We Are Barnsley's Facebook page to criticise how the matter was handled.

Wendy Shelley, who commented on our Facebook post, said: "It's ridiculous. People have travelled for four hours. The inspection should have been done before coaches set off."

Simon Biltcliffe, a Reds fan who made the long journey down south, said: "Charlton's fans were great, though. All of them were massively apologetic.

"Some even insisted on buying us a round of drinks as they were so sorry."

I know you Barnsley fans must be disappointed but these things do happen at times and you should be aware the weather had been very bad and anything could happen, instead of complaining you should of turned you day out into an adventure, you might of enjoyed it even more than the football.
