A FIVE-VEHICLE collision forced police to close Dodworth Road on Tuesday afternoon.

Police were alerted to the collision at 2.55pm and put the closure in place.

Ambulances made their way to the scene and treated injured people, although a police spokeswoman confirmed nobody sustained serious injuries.

Seven people were reported to have minor whiplash injuries.

Dave Sutton, a man who was in one of the lorries involved in the crash, came on We Are Barnsley's Facebook page afterwards.

He said: "I got the full brunt of the crash but I'm happy to report that I'm fine. I have a little bit of pain and the driver of our vehicle has similar effects."

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 562 of January 7.

Fortunately no one was seriously hurt but why
was all that traffic diverted onto Shaw lane just as 3 schools were finishing ?

Why do you think Fred. There could have been someone really hurt it's easy to give a negative comment when you know the results NOT when it's just happened. Emergency covers all angles thankfully no one was hurt bad just a diversion I'd say that was good.

Fred, where else could they have diverted the traffic???

The emergency services take control of the traffic to allow space for the emergency teams to work in safety. For the accident victims and attending services. Traffic needs to be cleared and diverted to prevent further accidents. Would have thought that was common sense. Unfortunate it was school closing time.

I live on Dodworth Road and also collect my daughter from school on Shaw Lane. Yes it was crazy especially at that time as it was virtually impossible to cross the road on Shaw Lane as no traffic gave any leeway and there are no crossings or lollipop lady/man but I think what is actually the most important is that no one was seriously hurt. It gets me how some people just never see the bigger picture. If it was u involved in the accident how would u feel. Be grateful we have the services we've got. They do the best they can in a horrible situation.

no one can help the time of the accident, but they could have turned most of the traffic around and sent the back up Dodworth road, and through town a different way.

Sending them down a road that is already gridlocked at that time of day wasn't the best idea, especially with hundreds of primary school children being let out of school at that same time.

I am sure anyone who knows the area well enough would not have opted to go down Shaw Lane at school closing time anyway.

Why not send traffic around to either Summer Lane and then Pogmoor Road or just continue up Racecommon Road and use Broadway. Granted it may have meant turning the traffic lights off and using a uniformed officer as traffic control but they are trained to do this - Shaw Lane is not suitable as an alternative route to any of these roads regardless of time due to residents cars being parked up.

as folks have said above the road needs to be clear of traffic to give room for getting those involved in the accident out of the vehicles safely, and also to gather any evidence needed about the crash, if someone had been seriously hurt or killed it needs to be kept "sterile" for crash investigation team. glad everyone involved is ok,

Don't knock people that stand up for your safety, one day you or your family might thank them.

DRIVING TO CLOSE! Everyone in the accident is to blame except the first vehicle, if they had all left a reasonable gap instead of being under the bumper of the car in front this would not have happened.
