Online Petition Set Up By Concerned Residents

Wednesday January 8 2014

A PETITION has been set up in the hope it will make Barnsley Council hear residents' concerns about the safety of Racecommon Road.

Over 1,600 people have joined the 'Let's Make Racecommon Road Safe' page on Facebook, but now an online petition has been made to further its cause.

Shelley Love, a driving instructor who started the group, said: "After three serious accidents in 12 months, enough is enough."

Having grew up around the area and now living on nearby St Edward's Avenue, Shelley is determined for measures to be put in place to eradicate the road's ongoing problems.

"It's the speed issue which is most concerning," she added. "It's inevitable that people will park on the road as it's near to the town centre but making it a 20mph zone would reduce accidents.

"I'd like Barnsley Council to enforce fines on illegally parked drivers and have more of a presence in the area.

"People speed to beat the traffic lights and having a camera on top would deter people from driving aggressively."

As well as gaining residents' support, the campaign has received the backing of Dan Jarvis, the MP for Barnsley Central.

He said: "I'm regularly on Racecommon Road and share the concerns of local residents about the impact of the traffic there.

"It shouldn’t be a case of taking your life in your hands when crossing a road.

"I will be working with local councillors to ensure that this issue is looked at in careful detail by Barnsley Council."

The council confirmed to We Are Barnsley that discussions are due to take place with South Yorkshire Police in the near future.

Safety first, reduction in speed and restricted parking. Permits for householders will stop people parking to go into town. Its not ok to have cars parked up on pavements etc.

Majority of the parents live locally thats what makes me laugh I drive but I walk to school walk back home then drive to work might sound a pain but I enjoy the walk with the kids n it's literally 5 mins away it's stupid

Racecommon rd is not as bad as Shelley makes out have lived on all my life and it's not as dangerous as she makes out . I have just done a report for council and they are are a lot of worst rds in town . I think Shelley needs to concentrate on her life instead of trying to be famous .

Reply Posted by Jamie on Thursday January 9 2014 at 19:32
I agree with Peter Shelley is trying to make her self famous . There is not a serious problem worst roads in barnsley than racecommon rd . What's Shelley's next project . Make Dodworth rd safer or summer lane or west way or shamble street

I use to live on dodworth rd just infront of abbey vets its was bad for traffic in the mornings and teatime and on weekends but if you use the crossings no one will get hurt it simple really all roads are dangerous use your brain before crossing

I agree, if people used crossing to cross it would be safer but Racecommon Road only has one as the bottom. Another one at the middle would help out massively on the school run and for other pedestrians. I don't think its down to shelly wanting to be famous, more trying to raise awareness and hopeful get something in place to help ALL users, both drivers and pedestrians on Racecommon Road.

I can honestly say I have no wish to be famous. I would like to know how road safety is a way or a reason to make someone famous? I respect everyone's opinion on what road they find is getting used irresponsibly. I felt there was a problem and people have agreed. I have lived here for 30 years and have a good idea of the problems road users face on Racecommon Rd and the other surrounding roads, however my family are directly effected by Racecommon Rd and that's why I did this.

I can't believe someone would say Shelley is only doing this to be famous!
Famous?? Seriously
I think she is fantastic for the passion she shows for road safety and making a stand to safeguard our children/relatives/friends!!! These comments are so hurtful
If you have nothing nice to say about such a worthy cause why comment??
Come on everyone support the cause to keep Racecommon road safe x

Being a victim in a serious car accident i think shelley is doing a great job and people shouldn't say silly things such as 'she's only doing this to get famous' shes only trying to improve road safety and help people to be more aware of racecommon road and yes there is other roads that are dangerous but her focus is racecommon road as she and her family live near. So any negative comments are not needed keep them to yourself thanks

Yes lets make Racecommon Rd SAFE, STOP the residents parking like they do, the highway code says don't park on a bend, SO WHY DO YOU, have you how some of you park. I go down there a lot and always have problems around the shops and Shaw lane, thats half the problem sorted

I am aghast that people would accuse someone for creating a road safety petition as a fame seeker. These people should be disgusted with themselves. God forbid anything ever happens to them on Racecommon road. I lived there for 27 years and saw first hand the problems caused; I have since moved to dodworth road which is nowhere near as bad; it is far wider and much straighter. I fully endorse this campaign and the hard work which is bring done. Unfortunately as with most things there will be people who are against it but to accuse a genuine person of trying to gain fame from this just goes to show how small minded and selfish some people are.

I think Shelly is doing a great job, I cross the road at least 6 times a day going backwards and forwards to school and hate racecommon road with a passion, safety measures need doing ASAP, and as for Shelly wanting to become famous u talk out of ur arse, your most likely the ones that are speeding, let's hope none of your family get knocked down peter and Jamie, keep your nasty comments to yourself

Reply Posted by Claire on Saturday January 11 2014 at 21:08
Well personally I think some of the comments above are totally wrong, race common road is by far one of the most Dangerous roads in Barnsley. Glad someone finally decided to try sort it out unlike others who are CLEARLY jealous of Shelleys work. I dont know Shelley but shes doing a fantastic job as also alot of people think too. You can do this, youve got alot of support behind you too! Keep up the work shelley :) xx

All i read then 'Peter' and 'Jamie', is that you have no concern whatsoever for the safety of children as well as the wider community in which you live. Think before you open your mouths. Shelley is trying her best, and she should be thanked for all the hard work she has put in, it seems to me like too many people are happy to sit on their thumbs and do nothing. Shelley is a credit to our community, seems to me like some people are either jealous that they don't have the balls to do what Shelley's done, or they are on the opposing team. i.e. the irresponsible drivers who cause these problems. Having a go at the campaign is one thing, but making personal remarks towards Shelley is another. Have your say, fine. But having a pop at Shelley only tells the world that you know she's absolutely right with everything she's been saying. Playground politics.

Just carry on supporting Shelley and if road need speed restrictions you have to fight for them.

Don't give up instead unite and press the authority's to change there minds.

Stand up and be counted another life saved is worth it.

Good luck and keep fighting

How sad that those feel to think that Shelley would like to be famous??
Well what you don't know that she actually already is.
So quite clearly this has nothing to do with the fame factor.
Shelley is obviously looking out for the people of Barnsley ... And here here I completely agree with the girl.. Go Shelley you are a star :)))

Shelley stop trying to be famous!!! lmao!
At the end of the day what shelley is doing is amazing, she has a heart of gold and will do anything for anybody. What is it hurting what she is doing? Anyone would think she was asking for money or something! Just a little support from people is all shes asking, That road IS dangerous, my husband got knocked off his motorbike at the junction with pitt street in 2009 at school time, kids saw it, how horrible for them to witness someone being hit and thrown through the air!! the driver of the car couldn't see when pulling out because of all the parked cars around the junction. We lived on Harvey street for 10 years and you have to drive on the other side of the road to get out. Something does need doing before another serious accident occurs! Go Shelley!!!! xxxxx

Famous? Then surely she'd be auditioning for Big Brother or BGT! No she's trying to raise awareness about a notorious stretch of road after a child was seriously injured, and many accidents previous, a concerned mother maybe better fitting, have people nothing better to do than sit throwing judgement at someone trying to do something good? I suppose always a cynical so and so wherever, keep up the good work, and focus on the hundreds of positives not 2 negatives x

Reply Posted by Jo on Sunday January 12 2014 at 15:16
Well said Shelley. Your doing a fab job at keeping up the awareness.

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH PETER AND JAMIE !!!! This lady is fighting for the safety of our children, at least someone has the determination commitment to fight for the safety, lower speed limits, Racecommon Road is another accident waiting to happen, next time it could be someone you know... So let's fight now and change the speed limit and parking before it happens again..... The council must take notice......

Well well well!! A child was seriously injured on this road a few weeks ago! I saw everything from the sheltered complex where my mum lives! The sight of a child laying in the road screaming made me feel sick to the stomach! Shelley is doing a fantastic job of trying to introduce some kind of road safety measures on this notorious stretch of road! She's a driving instructor so knows fully the impact of what measures are needed!!! My brother was knocked off his bike on here not long ago by a speeding driver! As for the comments she's trying to be famous?? What??? A child nearly got killed!!!!! She's only doing what any other decent person interested in community issues should do !! I hope Barnsley Council take note!! Stop spending silly money on fountains outside the town hall and start spending it on serious concerns that matter!! The fact it's signed by over 1600 signatures SPEAKS VOLUMES!!! Well done Shelley!!! And keep up the pressure !
