Worker Breaches Bail Within 30 Minutes

A WORKER at Tankersley Manor Hotel arrested for drink driving ended up in the pub within 30 minutes of being banned from licensed premises by the police, Barnsley Magistrates' Court was told.

Andrew Ford, 38, who has been a conference assistant at the hotel since July, went from the police station to Chennels on Wellington Street to meet friends, said Chantel Lowery-Green, prosecuting.

She said Ford, of Laithes Lane, Athersley North, had been given a blanket ban on going to pubs after being granted bail.

Ford had been arrested after driving from a pub after a drinking session and narrowly missing a wall. She said he was 'very drunk, slurring his words and staggering'.

Philip Stables, defending, said: "Mr Ford left the police station clutching his bail document without reading it in detail. He called his friends because they were concerned about him.

"He found out they were in the pub and went to meet them. It was only when he looked at the paperwork that he realised he was banned from all pubs and that he had breached bail."

Ford, who admitted drink driving and breaching bail, was freed from custody.

His case was adjourned until January 3 for a pre-sentence report.

I fail to see why the authorities should be banning people from pubs in the first place, unless they have been committing offences inside pubs regularly.

A person might need to buy a drink from a pub in order to get permission to use the toilet, due to a lack of public toilets, in order to avoid urinating/defecating in public.

A person might want somewhere warm to read a newspaper or have a cup of tea, perhaps even a meal. You don't have to drink alcohol in pubs. And it is legal to have a pint and drive a car, providing you don't absorb enough alcohol into the bloodstream to push you over the drink drive limit.

i agree. why should he banned from pubs??..sounds a bit silly to me. unless he has violated some law in a pub?

So he didn't get a driving ban?! Proves South Yorkshire police are useless! Sure they'll do something when he hurts someone drink driving again...

The Police can't ban someone from driving, they can impose bail conditions to prevent someone commuting further offences before going to court, where inevitably he would be banned and the breach of his bail conditions would be taken into consideration!
It would be interesting to hear what the outcome on Friday was WAB?

You people do not know me or the circumstances. People in glass Houses etc etc. ......

And for your information. ..... Ford did get a ban. .... purely based on someone's statement rather than ANY evidence. Arrested at home whilst watching tv. So come on do-gooders, bring it on because you don't know me, my other half or what actually happened.

Whats a blanket ban does that mean he can't go into pubs at all cos it seems bit harsh
