Man Holds Hands Up After Lying About Cancer

Tuesday December 10 2013

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

A LYING father-of-three conned his family and work colleagues into thinking he had cancer in a desperate attempt to win his pregnant girlfriend back.

Martin Heath, who works at Tesco in Penistone, let relatives and co-workers believe he was suffering with the illness for months before coming clean.

He said his imaginary tale ‘snowballed’ after he told it to his former partner - an ex-colleague and mother of his 12-week-old daughter - in the hope she would have sympathy and return after breaking off their relationship.

His attempt failed.

The revelation has angered some staff at the store, who fundraised in his name, and caused supermarket bosses to launch an internal investigation.

Mr Heath, of High Street, Penistone, said he did not gain financially from the fictitious story, which he said started in May or June, and regretted his actions.

"I'm ashamed of what I’ve done and I hold my hands up," he said. "I shouldn’t have done it. I hope they can forgive and forget. Well forgive, not forget."

Mr Heath has been treated for depression and claims to have attempted suicide on two occasions.

He split from his partner of 22 years - the mother of his two teenage children - after beginning the affair with his then Tesco colleague.

His two older children and former long-term partner were also fooled by his fantasy story before he confessed the truth to them.

Mr Heath, who said he continued to work through his alleged illness, and the majority of people have been supportive since discovering the truth.

But some colleagues said they were disgusted by his behaviour. One even did a sponsored race, wearing a top bearing his name on it in aid of cancer research.

A spokesman for Tesco said the supermarket was investigating the allegation and taking the matter very seriously. No further comment was provided.

I feel sorry for the guy who did a race in his name, I can't imagine how angry I'd be if it was me. What a disgusting story, he must have put his family through hell.

Not sure why this story is published, is this really in the public interest? Or is it just to name and shame someone so the 'it's discusting!!!' brigade can have a pop at someone they don't know nor understand of his personal circumstance. The guy seems to be trying to make peace with the people he hurt, is that not enough?

He was an absolute idiot but he didn't profit from it financially or break any laws.

If he is really suicidal then publishing this story is irresponsible. He's surely paid for his mistake

he did profit in away tesco paid him a fully wage when he was off so called sick. and as far as i know he is not and never has been suicidal he deserves all he gets

how blooming awful for the family friends and colleagues. what an awful lie to tell. I do hope tho that others with genuine cancer may gain from proceeds raised. hope all that got involved with fund raising do not loose heart at any future fund raising because of one senseless lie

I don't condone the fact this person has lied and lied about something as serious as cancer. There is obviously an underlying reason for the whole twisted story. This is what needs sorting. Sending him to prison isn't the answer. Getting him the help he needs is.

he want his exgirlfriend back with the baby. no excuse for what he did.

Reply Posted by dd on Tuesday December 10 2013 at 13:10
well said cazz. rory I as many others have lost loved 1s to the dreaded disease.you can not make excuses for what he did. you should be ashamed of yourself.lock him up

Reply Posted by me on Tuesday December 10 2013 at 13:51
What would sending him to prison accomplish?? What he did was wrong but it's not criminal.

Reply Posted by soore on Tuesday December 10 2013 at 13:54
i know the family personally and let me tell you now his actions for this are diabolical he is ashamed and the people in his life well he as no 1 in his life as hes that sort of person who should be punished and locked away for his own good none of his older kidz have anything to do with him and havent done for ages i have a list a mile long could blab on fr ever and tell you all about him but thats not my place and the papers have it wrong 1 kid is 19 other is 22 so they wanna get there facts right before blabbing

Reply Posted by cazz on Tuesday December 10 2013 at 14:31
it dont matter how old his kids are martin lied he deserves everything he gets. as far as i know he did still talk to his son. martin still lied to the paper

This is an act of a desperate man with some kind of mental issues and doesn't deserve to be locked up
I am in no way defending him or his actions but as we can see is we are getting the usual we are Barnsley witch hunt by the morons that live in this town

Reply Posted by cazz on Tuesday December 10 2013 at 21:34

Reply Posted by cazz on Tuesday December 10 2013 at 21:48

Reply Posted by bus on Tuesday December 10 2013 at 22:13
He doe. NOT have a mental illness. He is just evil.
He was out other night and was bragging about it. He has no shame.

Reply Posted by bus on Tuesday December 10 2013 at 22:19
He should NOT have support from family or friends. Not even doctors as it's a waist of money which could be spent on people with real health problems.NOT made up lies.

Reply Posted by cazz on Tuesday December 10 2013 at 22:29
i agree i know that alot of his family are not talking to him and he has lost alot of friends through this lie

Reply Posted by cazz on Tuesday December 10 2013 at 22:36

Reply Posted by kilkenny on Wednesday December 11 2013 at 09:30
@Rory - I agree with you. The 'discusting' brigade are always out in force on these threads.

I am surprised we haven't had 'he should be locked up and the key thrown away'

Get real will some of you! It's not a crime to lie or make up a story. Bunch of fools. He is mentally unstable by the sounds of it and will no doubt regret and be dragging this around with him for the rest of his life. Some of you should practice what you preach. None of you lie? Bunch of innocents? That's a first. Get a grip.
