Fan Banned After 'Silly' Steward Row

Wednesday December 4 2013

A BARNSLEY fan's 'silly' row with an Oakwell steward about a bottle of pop has ended up with him being banned from matches for four years.

Jason Roger Armitage, 43, took exception in the West Stand broke the rule that tops or lids on drinks must be off, Barnsley Magistrates' Court was told.

Jack Danaher, defending, said Armitage made 'one rule for us, another rule for them' remarks and steward Jessica Brayford, 20, intervened.

Mr Danaher said things started out as a joke but got out of hand.

He said: "This was a very silly argument. Mr Armitage could not understand why the other person had been allowed to keep the top on the bottle.

"He thought he was being patronised, became irritated, aggressive and used bad language. He stood up, she pushed him with the flat of her hand and he grabbed her wrist."

Chantel Lowery-Green, prosecuting, said Miss Brayford had to twist her wrist to escape Armitage's grasp.

She said Miss Brayford branded Armitage a 'coward and a bully' after the incident.

She said: "Mr Armitage made remarks about there being one rule for fans and one rule for others. He got more angry and aggressive as the conversation went on."

Armitage, of Kendal Green, Worsbrough, a self-employed builder, admitted assault. He was ordered to do 120 hours of unpaid work, to pay costs of £85 and a £60 victim surcharge.

Seems fair, staff everywhere are having to put up with people who think they can be abusive and have no comeback upon them. Barnsley Football Club don't need aggressive people within a family crowd it adds nothing to enjoyment of the game

So why was the other person allowed a top to stay on?

Who cares? That is not the point. The point is that the man acted like an aggressive tool and there are enough of them already. Glad he was banned.

Armitage is a thug. He has been warned before in that stand and a supervisor who has now left had to stop him hitting another bloke near the dugout end and was made to sit further away. Im my opinion he needs a full 5 yr banning order

Thug? He's as soft as shi*e! Thinks he's the hard man but I've lost count the amount of battering's he's had.

Club rules are that any bottled drinks bought from inside the ground have the tops removed on purchase however any drinks bought from outside the ground still have their tops intact :o)

Don't disagree with the ban, no room for aggression. But why, if it's true, would someone else not have to comply. Who was it, joe public or some vip.

only drinks bought inside the ground have the tops removed if you bring your own the top is still on :o)

If he was known for this why would she deliberately provoke him and push him? Looks like he grabbed her wrist to stop her from pushing him.

our staff are highly trained to defuse situations, however the gentlemen in question adopted an aggressive stance and our steward felt threatened so pushed him with the flat of her hand, he then grabbed her which is totally and utterly unacceptable.

The ban is totally and utterly justified in our opinion and our staff will have one less mindless idiot to look after.

I also wanted to point out that this is not an everyday occurrence, for the most part the fans at oakwell are extremely well behaved and it is a wonderful family atmosphere on matchdays.

Not condoning the guys actions in anyway but would not surprise me if he was provoked the stewards down there are rude, arrogant and majority of time fan the flames and provoke not diffuse.some decent guys down there but far and few between, I think john boys attitude states it all as a supervisor......

The gentleman in question has been warned many times about his conduct, especially swearing loudly in an area which has many families in.
whatever your views on the matter you do not grab a woman, end of.

You were making your point beautifully until "you do not grab a woman, end of" The point should be that you do not grab *anyone* reguardless of sex/colour/creed what-have-you.
The steward in question should be protected as a person doing their job - not because she is considered more 'fragile'.

You dont push a angry man for standing up thats going to make it worse and sounds like he grabed her so he did not fallover. Sounds like the stewards are equally over aggressive.

John I advise you delete your "bell end" comment as such a thing could result in a disciplinary if BFC has a Social Media Policy, it would come under "bringing the organisation into disrepute".

Whatever this guy did or how much he had it coming, a professional member of staff should not be fanning a resolved situation by imagining what you would have done to him and then insulting him.

He's had his punushment, that's that.

When a angry man is stood there shoutin and screamin at you the last thing u do as a a scared woman Is push the man who's screamin n swearin he restrained her from doin it again not like he's knocked her out they are both as bad as each other if they are trained properly then she should be able to diffuse the situation n explain to the man the rules n regulations of the barnsley football club not hard is it n if he wa known as an aggressive person then a male steward should av safeguarded her simples

Did Jason go to Darton High School? There was somebody by that name who would be around 43 now. I wonder if it is him. If it is, he was a right bullying bastard who loved to pick on girls. A bit of a fat slob if I remember him rightly. Which I do.

Reply Posted by Dave Greenwood on Friday December 6 2013 at 08:53
That's him.

Hang on, did she not push him first? If she's big enough to give it she's big enough to take it. Everyone seems to gloss over that fact just because she's female

Reply Posted by Gash on Sunday December 8 2013 at 17:12
Yeah, thats what it sounds like to me adie. In fact she was probably actually attacking him and he had no option but to defend himself from the onslaught.

they are both as bad as each other. as a woman myself she should have known not to provoke him if he was angry. any woman or man knows not to provoke someone who is already angry unless you wanna get potentially hurt in some way. im not saying what he did was right but he could have been grabbing her to stop himself from falling onto someone else, not as an act of aggression, but as per, because the steward was a woman the man is instantly a bully and no one listens to the other side of the story...

I was at the very last match last season and I so a steward attack a young boy maybe around 10.his dad was fuming which I would have been....along came about 10 little hitlers to back him up..last time oakwell gets my money..could have become very violent but the stewards are always right.would it have been the same outcome if he was a woman cos I would have bitch slapped her .....

it was a member of the catering staff that had a bottle top on, he didnt think it was fair that he wasnt allowed one when they were.

Stewards are employed by Doyles? I think and BFC hire them reading all these comments and comments on facebook bit makes you wonder why they still got contract do they half own club or summat lol. In all seriousness tho wake up BFC and listen to your fans you are paying a company who are losing you fans, how many people have said dont get a season ticket now because of them or wont be renewing? - I for one can vouch for that I complained last season and got no where well new ceo now so maybe they think more of fans and will listen to us
