Concerned Mum 'Bamboozled' By Council's Responses About Filthy Play Area

Wednesday December 4 2013

A CONCERNED mum-of-two has called for urgent action to fix a filthy play area which she feels is not fit for purpose.

The kick wall and basketball court at Millhouse Green, off Royd Avenue, is swamped in mud and water.

Jolene Allen, 34, who has boys aged nine and 14, has contacted Barnsley Council about the issue but has been left 'bamboozled' by its responses.

"I have complained to the council about it in the past and they blame everyone else instead of sorting it," said Mrs Allen, of Royd Avenue.

"Meanwhile our kids get to play in this filth. When I've spoken to other residents everyone tuts but no one does anything about it - I don't think anyone knows where to turn."

According to Mrs Allen, the area is unsuitable for children throughout the year.

Ingrid Law, chairman of Millhouse Green Village Community Association, said the facility was a priority for the group and she would like to see the problem resolved.

"The drainage around there is an issue and needs sorting out," she said.

A bit of mud is nothing compared to most play areas in Barnsley, broken glass, tab ends, baggies and even needles surround almost every park I've been in.

take a brush and shovel and spend 15 mins making it nice for your own kids

Agreed. Not sure any kid ever died from playing in a bit of mud & water. Pretty sure it added to the fun when I was a kid..

Not sure what language lauren is using or what point she is making. It's the councils job but it's not worth doing because it will end up the same again due to birds (fowl) messing it up?

It's the council’s job because we pay council tax for stuff like this. Resurface it with a synthetic material; otherwise the kids will be elsewhere and possibly causing other problems.

Just pointing out Jolene is a youth worker and genuinely cares about any young person in whatever area they live. Why would you not want the council to do something to improve young peoples lives??

If council was to spend £ xxx on repairs people would be complaining about the state of our roads or other "more urgent "matters....personally whilst it might be the councils job we all know about the cuts so a shovel and bucket would potentially solve this...perhaps they SHOULDNT have to do it themselves but if it is a way of resolving it I would rather do it myself than complain and wait for nothing to be done....rant over.....

A shovel and bucket wouldn't solve drainage problems though. Young people don't have enough as it is it's the least that could be done.

I like the comment from the Millhouse green VA
The tennis courts come above a children's play area
As an area of Barnsley we tend to get forgotten

I'd also like to point out it's not just mud
There is a stream running across there and when it freezes in to an ice rink along with the foot path that runs down the side of it

Reply Posted by The Council on Friday December 6 2013 at 21:14
Why doesn't she just clean it up herself if she's that bothered.

Reply Posted by Jase on Friday December 6 2013 at 22:42
It's not a case of cleaning it up there is a problem with the drains when it freezes it's just dangerous & there's a footpath runs along side it & it's next to a school

Why is someone who has been given a Community Service Order not put in there to sort it out?

The article heading is that shes bamboozled by the Councils response, but yet we have no idea what this response was that is so bamboozling. Its obvious its a drainage issue, is it even a drainage issue on Council land? Is it draining from private land? Putting in drains is expensive work, and there's no point putting in a fancy surfacing for it to be damaged. People seem to forget the Council has 60 odd million pounds to save. If you and the community are that bothered, grab a sweping brush and clean it up, or organise a fundraising event for the community association to afford to fix it. People dont want their Council Tax to go up, the Council has to save money (imposed by central government) so the services the Council offers will have to be reduced.

This area is near a pathway to a school. Its a hazard! Its a problem with the drainage and seems no one wants to take responsibility for the problem. The smell is disgusting owing to the drainage problems and people have to live with that. Some body needs to take responsibility. Yes residents could take brushes and water and clear it. Yet next lot of rain and its in same state again.
