Parents Demand Road Safety Measures For New Super-School

Monday January 16 2012

PARENTS with children at one of Barnsley's new super-schools are asking the council to consider better road safety measures amid fears a child will get hurt.

Shafton ALC has been developed near some of Barnsley's busiest roads - but parents claim children coming from Cudworth - on the left hand side of Barnsley Road - don't even have a proper footpath to walk on.

Parent Nicki Pointon said: "There are quite a number of parents concerned about the lack of pavement and the fact that the children are having to cross a really busy junction with a roundabout.

"The only thing they have to walk on is a small cobbled walkway and it's just not safe for kids to walk on that as it's very narrow. The only way for them to walk on footpaths is to cross over three busy roads and the new bypass to get the right side of the road that the school is on.

"To be fair, we didn't even realise there wasn't a pavement there until we walked it. We want something to be done before someone is knocked down and killed.

"It's such a shame - the school itself is fantastic - but this has got to be sorted for the safety of the children."

Darren Richardson, assistant director of the council's environmental services, said: "As with all other new ALCs and the opening of Shafton, the access arrangements are being monitored carefully and feedback is being appropriately investigated to identify where further action may be needed and if any funding may be required."

it will take a child getting killed before anyone does anything.I cannot understand why in hell they put that school at the top of engine lane it is known for its accidents and deaths on that road.Barnsley council only think about themselves

it doesnt help when the bus driver offloads at side of road instead of designated bus stops like he did this morning putting kids in even more danger

spoke to counciler north this morn over the section between roundabout and dards pub on left which are cobbles but are walkerble he say he raised this at early stages of school build but was over ruled  mrs o brien was there on friday makeing pupils cross the round at the roundabout [which is suicied] so they can walk 50 yds on right then cross back for bus stop she was accompined by a police pso who obviously doesnt deserve his job making kids cross on a round about  i have contacted the police on the issue and a inspector says it is not the police who are doing this but the pso under the advise of the school and there is no legal  issue by walking on the left  due to the number of children walking that way i strongly feel the council should amend the kerb  after all there isnt a days work in it  counciler north is raiseing the matter with council/ school /and police  mrs o brien says its her main concern but weve that before bearing in mind some of these  children are yr 7

Got a son attending and he walks, ring him all the time to make sure he's got there safe, it is a worry for parents, great school but totally unsuitable site, not even any traffic lights to help them, poor..

answer to this on friday supervised by mrs o brien and accompanined by a

road on the side of the roundabout [which is suicide] walk on the left
for 50yds then cross back  i have raised concerns with the police and an
inspecter who rang me back says the police are not enforcing this it is
the school and the pcso and there is no legal reason to stop children
walking on the cobbles if they wish  with care  due to the number of

I have a child going to that school and it is a worry every day, dont get me started on the issues, but yes, the road safety is a constant worry. I do understand that there will be a number of pupil that will not have any regards for road safety, but that does not excuse the fact that this bright idea was generated by adult that do not seem to have considered the wellbeing of these children. I do believe that there will be something very tragic happen before anything is done, and even then, you cant move where the build it, what a stupid place to build.

i no from 1st hand that this is a very dangerous road, my uncle got killed on engine lane in a road traffic accident back in the 80's, and in the future my son will be going to this school so looks like al be walking him down myself as this road is and always has been DANGEROUS!

i dropped and picked my 12yr old son up the first day, but refused to do it again due to fear of been involved in an accident with someone or something as a young boy on his bike fell off the cobbles into my path as i left the round-about luckily i was going at a very slow cautious speed and he was lucky as he could have dropped on one of these that dont give a damn. even though i feel i am a cautious driver if something did happen i wouldnt like that hanging over my head,  this may sound harsh on my son but he has been told he MUST always use the transport provided on school grouds even though it is only 4 stops away ! i cannot understand why so many children are spillin out when there is all that transport provided even if only to shafton ! i do hope the matter is resolved although i cant see this being as like someones said they spill onto roads so turning the cobbles into a path wont have much resolution when the busy double round-abouts will still be a huge concern !

My kids won't be going to this school because i don't live in the area but what a dumb ass place to put it!!! On a roundabout on a bypass!!! THICK!! All that land down there where it would be safer and they put it there!!
These are the people that get paid thousands for not having any common sense i want to know who passed this and how and what they got paid for doing so!!
And your right, nothing will be done until someone is seriously injured or even killed.

My daughter has just come home from school and said that she has heard that a year 8 student was knocked down yesterday, don't know if this is true, you know what kids are like but this just shows that something needs to be done sooner rather than later.

Reply Posted by Inmyopinion on Tuesday January 17 2012 at 18:44
he should not have been using the cobbles

Reply Posted by Inmyopinion on Tuesday January 17 2012 at 18:47
kids do what they want anyway, i have seen them just run across the road to catch a bus, did not even attempt to use the safe crossing even in the school they just walk across the car park instead of using the footpaths

my point im trying make kids dont have road sense ive had a number of kids run out in front of me if i pipped my horn i got called all the names under the sun :( yeah i agree a footpath needs to be done but these kids also need to made aware of roads saftely its the drivers that will at fault not thr kids some of these kids dont give a dam :(
