Man Steals From B&Q As Money Was 'Running Out'

Monday December 2 2013

A MAN pinched some DIY products - so he could finish the building of a summer house for his daughter.

Barnsley Magistrates' Court was told that 43-year-old Mark Ball was in B&Q at Stairfoot and realised his money was running out.

He stole £76.34 of items, said Eric Bray, defending.

Mr Bray said Ball, of Mount Street, Ardsley, had been using money he had won after a benefits appeal to buy things for the summer house for the four-year-old girl.

"He foolishly took the items. He had been seen by staff and a store detective," Mr Bray added.

Jayne Ormrod, prosecuting, said the things Ball stole were recovered.

Ball, who admitted shoplifting, was given a 12-month conditional discharge, ordered to pay £85 in costs and a victim surcharge of £15.

Lauren, I'm nearly out of petrol in my car and I was going to have to go out and steal some cos I have spent all my money on fags and booze. Oh I nearly forgot. The tax and insurance is due as well. I know what you are thinking but I an not really that greedy. I wont ask you to pay for it. Just a donation of say £100 will be a good start, but if you insist well lets say a round £500. Thank you. pmsl

Remember this isn't about Lauren, it's about some benefit claiming dosser that thinks he's entitled to take whatever he wants irrespective of the consequences. It's a tough time at the moment with the economy the way it is and christmas is just around the corner but basically if you cant afford it dont have it! There are lots of things that I'd love to go out and buy for myself and my kids but my WAGE (because I work) predominantly goes on rent and bills etc so if there isn't enough spare cash at the end of the month then tough. Thats life. More people need to adopt thatbattitide in my opinion. And justifying what these people do makes you just as bad as them.

Whatever his excuse, you do not steal and I bet this wasn't the first time. No sympathy for thieves. If the courts listened to every excuse it would give incentives for thieves to carry on and say they did it for ill Mums etc.

I would just like to point out that just because he says it's for his 4 yr old daughter, doesn't mean it's the truth! I used to say all sorts to the judge just to get back out on the streets! Most ppl lie in court there's no checks made! I've now changed my life for the better, I have been clean 5 year and worked the last 4! My record is now spent, but as I say, is probably not even true!

The prices at B&Q are fairly criminal in the first place, poor guy would have been waiting forever to build that summer house. We've all even there, I don't know what lengths I'd go to to finish my summer house on time.

What kind of example is he setting his daughter? I understand he wanted to do something nice but the nicer thing would have been not having a criminal for a father.

If you can't afford it ya don't have it!!! Thieving low life loser

I know that what he,s done is wrong in more than one way morally as well as lawfully and he does need punishing for it. but you also have to see how desperate people get in the upcoming weeks to Christmas and as he's on benefits he hasn't got the money to throw around on present everyone has different circumstances. Not everyone is on benefits due to their own fault, at one point my family had to have help from benefits when my partner lost his job and I understand how hard it is on benefits having to disappoint your kids when they want something its heart breaking. Yes he needs punishing for what's he's done but don't be so quick to judge him, you never know the full story.x

Well laura w, you seem to be too soft here. Ask yourself one question, would you steal like this guy? No hopefully not. Since time began, you don't take from another person/establishment, we all know its wrong. Never is it justifiable. I might make an exception for food if all options are closed, but possessions, no!

Laura W. Stealing because some people are on Benefits or on low income.Thats the biggest load of tripe I have heard.some wealthy people steal. The problem is this may not be is first attempt to steal. He may have done this lots of times and this time he got caught.Stiffer penalties need to be handed to the thieves..I employ 8 people in my shop and the day it has to close for the thieving gets and GOOD HONEST PEOPLE LOSE JOBS. .But that's ok Laura He is poor..

Reply Posted by meg on Sunday December 22 2013 at 18:36
judge him laura,..( think yourself lucky you don't know him ) never had a job in his life, spends all his benefits on drugs, beats up the woman in his life, in and out of prison, sells drugs ,has children who he wont support, if he was thieving to build a summer house for his little girle, whats he going to build for his other 4 kids, would all be better off if they locked him up and threw away the key

Why? Why is it heartbreaking to have to disappoint your children? Surely it is much better to raise children who understand that you cant often have what you want. That you need to save up for most things. That if you work hard, you might sometimes be able to afford luxuries. When did we stop doing that? When did one Christmas present stop being the most fantastic thing ever to a child?

Who builds a summer house in the middle of winter? If ya cant afford it, you don't get it, simples!

It is sad but really he should get a job end of. Rest of us have to pay for things so he should. Its not about him been punished and lauren in right there would have ways round it

OMG I cannot believe how some of you talk to each other on here, where's your manners? Everyone is entitled to an opinion and whether you agree with it or not there is no need to verbally abuse someone! I feel sorry for anyone who is struggling financially (I've been there too), but there is no need to steel. Kids have to learn that times can be hard and that if you ain't got the money, you save up or do without. On a side note... adults need to learn how to have a conversation without insulting each other, if you talk to ppl like this on here behind a screen, god knows how you talk to peoples faces? You don't have to steel manners, they are FREE so use them!
