MP Criticises Government As Shocking Figures Are Released

Wednesday November 27 2013

Dan Jarvis MP Dan Jarvis MP

A BARNSLEY MP has criticised the government after it was revealed that there was a 29 per cent increase in winter deaths last year.

Dan Jarvis, MP for Barnsley Central, said: "It’s a national disgrace that so many people are dying each year because they're too scared to turn on the heating.

"The situation has got increasingly worse, as these shocking statistics illustrate. David Cameron has done nothing since I raised this with him - apart from fail to stand up to the energy companies."

An estimated 31,100 excess winter deaths occurred in 2012/13 - a sharp increase on the previous winter.

The Office for National Statistics data, which compares deaths in winter months with averages in other seasons, shows most of the deaths involved people over 75.

Mr Jarvis added: "This year many people will have to choose between heating and eating. Ministers need to take urgent action and back Labour’s plans to freeze energy bills.

"For some time now, I have been urging all the key agencies and organisations in Barnsley to work together on this important issue. I was heartened when last month Barnsley Council held a Winter Summit, bringing everyone together to produce a co-ordinated solution.

"We shall soon see the publication of the council’s strategy for dealing with excess winter deaths in Barnsley - and I look forward to working with them on this vital issue."

People aren't 'scared' to turn the heating on, they are financially unable.

People aren't scared of going on holiday for example, they just can't afford to.

Some people don't heat their homes to save money, some of these people will receive winter fuel payments, fuel credit ( a £130 benefit paid directly to the energy supply cartel), and cold weather payment of £25 per week based upon temperature.

The people receiving these additional benefits are the ones who receive weekly benefit of £100-£145+ per week (on the sick/pension credit). They then receive other ad hoc benefits such a winter warmer packs of clothes and food parcels from the council.

Yet we have people barely existing on £56 and £71, some on even less, potentially even 0, and they are not entitled to any help.

These younger people will die quite a few years early, but it won't show up on statistics for a few decades.

I would admit that some people live in poverty but most people claiming to in Barnsley are just unable to budget. They spend money on items they don't need so they have no money left for essentials. They should get their homes insulated free through government schemes and look at how they spend money

@Annoyed the story is about pensioners dying in their own homes unable to afford heating. Are you saying they spend their money on booze and fags? Bandwagon jumping idiot

My grandmother died during the winter last year but she did get winter fuel payments and cold weather payments. However, she died from a twisted intestine - I wonder what these people actually pass away from before we could say what is the root problem of it all and how could we do more to stave of the problem rather than saying what the problem is without no evidence.

Is this fool trying to say that 31,100 deaths occurred, because all these people couldn't afford heating? What a crock!

@ dan Annoyed has a valid point, so many folk do not know how to budget and have got comfortable living off benefits. That is not the way. Its lazy and there is a lack of education on very basic things these days.

Take a look at what rations people had to live on during WWII and tell me that these people are not well off by comparison. You can't.

The article states that Dan Jarvis has said "the situation has got increasingly worse". What the article fails to include is that the population has increased at its fastest rate too (during Labour being in power), so of course mortality rates will increase too and that the last cycle of coldest winters has only occurred in the last four years). It doesn't detail the nature of the 31,100 deaths. Its just a meaningless headline to give Dan Jarvis something interesting to say.

I suppose you will be telling us that the 10,600 deaths directly attributed to welfare reform, the Tories and their Murdering Arm - Atos are fantasy next Richie Poos?

Richard and Annoyed, Have you read what he said? Read paragraph 5. He said "most of the deaths involved people over 75.". When you're 75 I hope you're not living off benefits or at least squandering it on "non essentials".

It's MP's like him we need in Parliament, at least the guy is trying to help.

Money saving experts will tell you that you can freeze your own heating by switching to the right company!

Ed Miliband spouted about this like it was something Labour were introducing!

Exactly how stupid does Ed Miliband (and Dan Jarvis) think the British Voters are??

Richard you are talking rubbish, prices have gone up almost universally across the board. Plus are you forgetting that the cost of living has gone up exponentially in the last 5 years, so even if you manage to freeze your gas and leccy bill you are still down on things like food and clothing, I usually don't comment on the things you put down but this is actually complete drivvle. Next you'll be telling us that things are better than they ever have been!

He's off again, spouting his complete and utter rubbish. WWII rations !? wtf

He certainly knows how stupid the Barnsley voters are.

@ Tony, you know WWII don't you Tony? When men were men, people cared about their country, put up with harder times to see it through to better times. Didn't whine about the little they had, went out and did their best for their families and properly budgeted to ensure they had enough to live on. You didn't think that was a fiction book did you Tony?

@ Alex are you having a laugh? Seriously you think this joker is needed in parliament? He's too busy running marathons and climbing mountains...when does he have time to answer letters or phone calls from his constituents? He doesn't....he's too busy lining his pockets to care about the people.

As for saying most deaths involve people over 75, the average mortality age in the north is around 75 anyway and lower in many cases), so it's fair to say these folk were reaching their natural end at this age. 75 in so many countries and in the north is considered a good age, so to live beyond this age is therefore considered a blessing. Just saying.

Reply Posted by Alex on Monday December 2 2013 at 15:39
@ Richard. Yes, his mountain climbing and his marathons are for charity.

As far as "lining his pockets" is concerned, he'd have to declare it. (which you will see if you go to his website).

These people have fought through the war or at least been involved in it, so that the scumbag you and your like are, can have the freedom of speech which you're using now. When people get to that age and they've pain their taxes, they have every right to keep warm, and no! you're not paying their benefits, they did!

Richard, I have seen comments from you on every article I have read recently and the only things you ever have to say are negative. All I see is a pathetic person behind a keyboard complaining about EVERYTHING as if they are the expert on every aspect of life and never seeming to do anything about it. Why not get off your computer or whatever medium you use to bash out these ridiculous comments and DO SOMETHING.

As for Dan Jarvis' activities such as climbing etc - as far as I know he was raising money for charity. I don't see how this is a bad thing? And even if he weren't you are allowed your own pursuits outside of work (I mean come on, you keyboard bash in your own time).

I'm tired of seeing your comments on every article; you clearly understand nothing of the world and I can guarantee I'm not the only one who just wishes you'd bugger off.

Reply Posted by Richard on Sunday December 1 2013 at 09:43
@ Miss N, clearly you are entitled to your opinion, which is exactly that, your opinion.

The assumptions you make about me are inaccurate.

I make my well informed comments due to what I see, experience and read. How would you possibly know I don't do anything about the problems I comment about? You don't.

Unfortunately, WAB only publish selective parts of articles they choose to write about. They don't give a full and accurate unbiased account. This is very obvious and I can give you countless examples of where this has happened.

My comments are merely giving people the chance to read, explore and do their own research to enable them to be aware of the FACTS.

As for charity work, it's not been highly publicised what charity work Dan Jarvis has done on his very lengthy and time consuming outdoor pursuits, but I do know the Labour Party itself have mismanaged their own party's funds to the tune of £13m in debt, of which over £1m of that is owed to the corrupt Co Op bank. Maybe his "charity" work is in some way connected? #justsaying

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Sunday December 1 2013 at 11:40
At least Labour can show where they get their party funding from, unlike the Lib Dem / Tory coalition they actively "hide" where they get their money from

Reply Posted by Richard on Sunday December 1 2013 at 12:24
Labour show where they get SOME of their party funding from, of which is from Unions and smack head run Co Op Bank that they owe over £1m to. They still can't manage their own party finances though by such huge debts, which begs the question as to why anybody would trust them with the entire country's purse strings!

90%of the comments written here are complete and utter crap .
None of you have any idea about 70 + year old people and whats going on in each individual persons life or lifestyle.
People die from cold weather at any age between one and 112 years and in hundreds of different ways, its a natural selection of weather versus people .
There are very wealthy people who die of cold and very poor people who die of cold. the uncanny thing that most people would agree with is not the fact that old people get heating allowance in this country but also in spain or canarys weigh that up before you critisise your own countrys people.
The weather mongers ie.
Express and mail forecast we are going to freeze our balls off for 3 months or more with snow up to our assholes .
Thats a good way to fuel the fear into old people .
Well two weeks on and it still hasnt happened .
Three years ago we had one good snowfall two years ago we d two good snowfalls and last year we had three this year we could have none .
According to all the weather centres long range models its going to be a long dry cold winter. saying that ( the Fish said we werent getting a hurricane ). We did. no one knows one way or another
but one thing is a certainty people dont just die from cold at any age also from heatstroke when its too hot

@ Mae, I agree largely in what you said, and which is why I made the comments I did. As mentioned the article doesn't say anything about increased population, average life expectancy etc.

It was simply a ridiculous headline to give Dan Jarvis something to say. It's backfired, just like his comical vote to abolish 'Bedroom Tax' to appear to be the people's friend, when he'd already known Labour decided not to win the vote.

Reply Posted by Richard on Monday December 2 2013 at 16:18
@ Alex, you are entitled to your opinion, but I have to say it all became meaningless at the point where you cast personal insults. How very childish.

As for his website and having to declare all expenses and income....perhaps you could tell that to the former Labour councillor of Rotherham for very recently being found guilty of Parliamentary expenses fraud. #justsaying.

I would have to question his political motives and connections to the charities he raises money for and how spending so much time training and completing these outdoor pursuits (far away from his own constituency) is beneficial to ALL his other constituents that have voted for him? #againjustsaying

Reply Posted by Alex on Tuesday December 3 2013 at 20:04
I thought we were talking "Dan Jarvis" Not some Councillor from Rotherham?

I was talking about the people of an older age that fought in a war or lived through the bombings. The same people that give you the right to free speech, and where you could walk down the street without being questioned by the Gestapo. You know "the ones you want to freeze to death!". I think if anyone's childish it's yourself.

You all talk a lot of crap,do you honestly think Dan Jarvis gives a toss, and others no matter what party they represent what happens to the lot of us while they all draw there expences etc,and look after the robbing Bankers that keep paying themselves ridicules bonuses, do you honestly think anybody gives a Shit,Dream On?

Reply Posted by Richard on Monday December 2 2013 at 23:24
@ Collect, thank you for your contribution, it was as informative as letting us all know what your next door neighbours cat had for breakfast.

Dan Jarvis doesn't give a toss, that's my point exactly.

The rest of your comment is just crass and meaningless.

Reply Posted by Richard on Tuesday December 3 2013 at 12:54
@ Ray, you'd probably find this hard to accept, as you may well be a strong Labour supporter (and they seem to believe everything they are told......by Labour!), but things have not got worse in the past 5 years, they are on the mend and that is FACT. It was the period between 1997 - 2010 that nearly made our country bankrupt. Do your own research by any means.

Labour left the piggy bank empty for our children and grandchildren to pay back. What should we do? Borrow billions more and put us in the same boat as Greece and Portugal? Of course not. Tighten belts, weather the storm, budget better and look to a positive future.

It wasn't the current govt that allowed the bankers to have a free reign on risky investments, it wasn't the current govt that allowed the huge influx of immigration.

Example: Had current govt not put a freeze on fuel duty, and Labour got their way, fuel would already be 13p a litre higher than it is now! What do you think that would have done to cost of living? 13p a litre is 10% inflation on its own.

Is that all rubbish? Read some facts before you spout at me.

@ Alex, what on earth are you talking about? Gestapo?

You've made personal insults towards me, this devalues your argument massively....not that you have any argument at all.

Where did I say I WANTED anybody to freeze to death? I didn't. Silly person and quite pathetic of you to twist and invent a statement to assist your argument...but as I didn't say that, seems you're looking a bit silly now.

Exactly how old should people of Barnsley naturally live to in your eyes? The article is inferring its mostly people OVER 75, which means they could be 85!....why not try comparing it to national average age of death. It also doesn't detail cause of death. The article is TRYING to suggest the cause of death is not having any heating. That is a crock, which is supported by an earlier post from -_-. Why is this even a story (and a deliberately biased story at that)??? It's not, it's simply trying to give Dan Jarvis something to say and this is the best he can come up with!

As for the people sending hate messages and pretending to be me. Yawn....oh wait I can feel another yawn coming! Just means my education was better than yours....which is evident.

Reply Posted by Ken on Wednesday December 4 2013 at 20:31

As everyone is being open about who is and who is not an asshole.
The biggest asshole was thatcher.
When thatcher came into downing street
she brought in fuel v a t of 5%.
This at the time was to invest in the new pollution tax and to build on alternative fuels for a dwindling gas supply . in all intent and purpose." a good idea". But it never happened now we are told by increasing bills that we have to pay for it as usual twice .
Like with north sea gas. . like with coal.. like with water.
its time that the government stopped lying its ass off and gavd something back to the country instead of giving it to india and china . being involved in wars. for the sake of it and lying to the british people about what a state we have put this country in.
The government has filled everybodys head with shit for hundreds of years and downed your minds and moods and then when the only thing you have left is a cig
they even take that away
