Social Supermarket To Open Next Month

Wednesday November 27 2013

WAITROSE and Marks and Spencer are just two of the big-name stores that are set to provide stock to Britain's first 'social supermarket'.

The store, which is opening in Goldthorpe next month, will enable shoppers to buy cut-price food and luxuries that would otherwise be thrown away by big retailers.

The idea has been developed by Company Shop and its chairman John Marren.

It expects its prices to be around 70 per cent cheaper than those found on normal shop shelves and will only be open to people on certain welfare benefits.

Items on sale will range from fresh fruit, meat and vegetables to tinned goods, cheeses and toiletries.

Goldthorpe was chosen as the location for the first, in what is scheduled to be a whole chain of community shops, because it's an area of high deprivation.

Sarah Dunwell, who is the spokesperson for Community Shop, the social enterprise project based at Tankersley, said the shop would not be stocked with basic ‘austerity’ lines.

"We will have staples such as sugar, pasta and rice but also more expensive goods such as French cheeses, ready-made lasagne and desserts and household products," she said.

"It takes items that will not make it to supermarket shelves and uses it to feed people who need it most."

As well as cut-price food the Goldthorpe shop will also offer budget and debt advice, cookery lessons and employability, skills training and volunteering opportunities.

Entry will be restricted to those with membership cards, which will be given only to families who are claiming certain benefits.

Leaflets publicising the scheme have already been delivered to homes in Goldthorpe. Initially 500 families will be selected to join the scheme for six months.

Disgusting that England has to do this in 2013.... What a shambles this country is!!!

how exactly is offering food to to the people that need it most at a reduced rate disgusting? Would you rather the situation be a little more akin to the one in America, whereby it's a common occurrence for the police to be called to have to oversee supermarket workers throwing out perfectly edible food, just to prevent riots from happening? Believe it or not, there's more than enough food to feed the entire planet, but the greed and narcissism of the 1% are ensuring that rather than banding together and making it a reality, we are instead bickering, banging heads and emphasising blame on the underclasses. Divide and conquer, oldest trick in the book.

Why should people on benefits get to eat top posh foods like waitrose and m&s although its food that would have got
thrown away when theres people working fulltime struggle to shop aldi or other shops

that's 4 jobs a week, leaving home at 6 am to do one job coming home to take my children to school, then going on to another job, coming home to collect my children from school, doing my own jobs, house work, looking after my children, then going on to my last job of the day and not getting home till 9.30 at night 6 days a week, just to put the record straight.

mrsx - You are so mean-spirited that you begrudge people food? What a nasty person you are. Lets hope you don't fall on hard times and have to claim benefits.

The Waitrose near my house reduces food around 8.30pm. Better to do that than throw it away.

You dont see the people who are on benefits who are struggling to put food on the table because the gas prices have risen again or wanting to make sure their children have a few prezzys to open xmas morning moaning because their not living within the catchment area or the fact that only 500 families will be selected. Amazing that live and let live. Your not moaning that you can't go to the company shop or costco either.

the more i read these comments on we are barnsley the more i can understand why people are not rushing to get jobs, the only thins you ever read are we are working our arses off and struggling to live,we cant afford to live ,put our heating on etc,not really the best incentive to get people to go back to work is,its no wander they are saying if its that bad working we will stay as we are, your supposed to be encouraging people to go to work not putting them off for life

Reply Posted by Light Is On on Wednesday November 27 2013 at 13:23
Okay, before anyone slanders my opinion. I don't begrudge the genuine public who are unable to work for whatever reason this kind of commodity.

But there are a hell of a lot more people claiming benefits in Barnsley that are perfectly capable of finding and sustaining a job. I'm referring to the lazy, no good lay abouts who can't be bothered to get up at 6am and provide for their families. So let's get this straight. I work full time, in two jobs. I pay tax and national insurance, and have done since I was 16.

This money is then handed out to these lazy tracksuit wearers, who are then able to go and spend the money on luxury goods, goods which even I myself struggle to buy (I work 50 hours and can't afford to shop at M&S) at a cost of 70% LESS than I would have to pay. Alongside that, I have to pay my own mortgage, council tax etc etc.

I thought the aim of the game was to give people an incentive TO GO TO WORK. Not yet another one to sit on their backsides all day.

We are the laughing stock of Europe...and this is why.

Reply Posted by Purple Haze on Wednesday November 27 2013 at 17:08
Light, I have to agree with your comments. It seems to me that every time that anyone who is working and paying tax, makes a comment about the unemployed they get slated. The unemployed seem to think it their right to have negative opinions about workers but apparently they also think that workers cannot have an opinion in return. There seem to be so many on benefits who have the time and money to use the internet and to be able to comment on here, how they can afford it I do not know!! They are always stating how poor they are.
So poor that they need cheaper food but of a better quality than what low paid workers can afford.
Where is the incentive for the unemployed to work when they only pay 9% of their council tax bill, have free prescriptions, free housing, plus other benefits for many such as disability cars etc etc? Now to top i off they get special supermarkets too. Surely people on benefits should be ashamed and instead of benefits to spend on luxury goods, booze, cigs (yes most smoke), cars, named brand clothes, sky, smartphones, internet etc they should have tokens to trade in for food and the essentials. Only then will people on benefits around here go back to work.
BTW to all the unemployed about to have a go at my comments, have some pride and get off your backside first.

Brainwashed by Tory propaganda old bean?

Sounds like that to me.

So how do those "unemployed scumbags" have so many luxuries in their lives for a mere £70 odd quid a week pray tell?

In order for them to "have some pride and get off their backsides first" then the jobs have to be there in the first place don't they?

Hey I have a radical suggestion, seeing that you feel it ok to pontificate about the great unwashed, why don't you give your job to an unemployed person and see how the shoe fits from their perspective my pedigree chum?

Oh and why should people on benefits be "ashamed" as you so eloquently put?

Seeing as though the wages in our town are almost exclusively minimum wage and the fact that people have to claim BENEFITS (namely Tax Credits) to top their wages up to are you also going to label them as benefit scroungers too?

Stop reading the Sun, get yourself a hobby and more importantly think about the ramifications of your idiotic words that come straight out of right wing Tory voters mouths.

Light Is on, we are the laughing stock of Europe as previous governments, namely Labour, decided that they would let all and sundry into our green and pleasant land.

The Franco/German alliance, namely the EU, didn't want the immigrants in their respective countries and it was decided a long time ago that they (Franco German alliance / EU) That the UK would become the "dumping ground" for anyone and everyone and that is why we now find ourselves with an extra FOUR MILLION (est) immigrants in our country.

So you begrudge the "lazy tracksuit wearers" sustenance then?
Are "they" not allowed to eat?
Would you prefer they starved?

Oh so you work two jobs then, hmm, I am guessing that you are perhaps just as uneducated as the "lazy tracksuit wearers" that you are complaining about?

Just to put things into perspective for you, seeing that you begrudge people the right to eat AND the fact that you tell us you work not one but TWO jobs, do you actually realise that you pay mere pennies per week to keep these "lazy tracksuit wearers" in dole money?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I suggest you stop reading the Sun or whatever right wing rag it is you read and get your "ideas" from.

I would like to see if you could live on £70 odd quid a week.

You keep reading your right wing papers pal.

I have never said I actually agree with the unemployed in any of my posts.
What I staunchly disagree with is the portrayal by the Tories and their right wing media cohort propagandists of unemployed people, never one to quote but "lazy workshy scroungers"?
Only a Tory would come out with such twaddle.

So these unemployed people and I quote directly from your post as follows:
only pay 9% of their council tax bill, have free prescriptions, free housing, plus other benefits for many such as disability cars etc etc? Now to top i off they get special supermarkets too. Surely people on benefits should be ashamed and instead of benefits to spend on luxury goods, booze, cigs (yes most smoke), cars, named brand clothes, sky, smartphones, internet etc

Tell me how is all that possible on £70 odd quid a week?

I wish I knew how to get all that and still be able to go down the boozer every night if I was unemployed.

@STEVEO. Firstly, I'd like to point out where I claimed that the "lazy tracksuit wearers" were not allowed to eat. Nowhere in my post did I begrudge them the right to eat. That covers that part of your post. Next time you try to bash my argument, please refrain from lying.

As for you claiming I'm just as uneducated as the "lazy tracksuit wearers". Nice try, but yeah, that would be another lie on your part. Unlike most of the "lazy tracksuit wearers" claiming benefits, I actually finished school. I completed 3 years at college, unlike many of the "lazy tracksuit wearers" who never enrolled. And on top of that, whether or not I'm as uneducated as the "lazy tracksuit wearers" or not, your point is irrelevant. The point is I actually contribute more financially to society than they will ever do. That's another one of your points that lacks substance then.

As for your claim that I pay "mere pennies per week" to sustain the "lazy tracksuit wearers". Yet another comical lie. Have you looked into how much of my tax goes to sustaining the "lazy tracksuit wearers"? Judging by your uneducated response, it would appear not. Next time, do your research and report back Captain.

Time for your third lie. I don't read newspapers. Lacking more substance I see?

"I would like to see if you could live on £70 odd quid a week". Typical idiotic comment. This is WHY I work two jobs. I choose to get off my backside and work 50+ hours per week to AVOID living on £70.00 per week. Do you have any valid points to make...one would think you are simply trolling these comments and are perhaps a "lazy tracksuit wearer" yourself? One has to wonder...

Reply Posted by -_- on Wednesday November 27 2013 at 20:13
I think the problem is that everything is imbalanced in society nowadays - I work as an apprentice, I pay more than 60% of my wages per week (£60) to provide for myself and I don't get absolutely no help when it comes to healthcare costs unless I filled in an NHS form whilst they'd be those who go to college, work part time - still earn more money and they get it for free. Now, that's a scenario and possibly why people may get upset over those on work vs those on benefits.

However, it's easy to point the finger and say all those on benefits are smokers and alcoholics who don't do nothing however they're people who are mothers, fathers who have to rely on benefits to support them as a stop gap until they can get a job after being made redundant.

But, the only way you'd be able to help people of benefits is by reinforcing the importance of work based training or academic style work as I know not everybody was good at school but they often make the best workers as they gain in social skills (I say often). As, I dislike being discriminating but from a general observation, most (I'm the only person that works full time out of the people I know apart from work) lack in grades achieved at school and ended up being moved pillar to post without having no support in education thus not going to college and having no way of gaining a good career which those that like to proclaim on this website has done.

Reply Posted by Xxx on Wednesday November 27 2013 at 21:25
I bet all those on benefits also have internet and top of the range phones and are sat watching sky after an afternoon at the club why not let them eat the finest foods! Lol

Where I live I see plenty of unemployed, I know some and even have some in my family. They all smoke. They all have a big TV and go out to the pub or nights out. They all eat takeaways and have named brand clothing. many have cars and go on holidays. They pay little towards society and their bills. They have free school dinners, Free prescriptions and many other things. Yet they complain and moan.
I am sure that many workers on here will understand that after they have paid all their own bills, rent or mortgage, council tax, prescriptions, no tax credits or school meals, no disability benefits or cars, they have no money for holidays, have debts, loans and struggle to feed their families and have no support from anyone. They are the ones paying taxes and paying their way but the unemployed on here think it is ok to slate them and to whine. Wake up call folks - it is not. Without those poorly paid struggling workers you lazy gits would be starving in gutters.

I agree it is sad and strange that someone would do that, but that's obviously what give these folk their kicks and its the highlight of their day.

@ .... ha ha ha ha, well clearly you are a silly person. I must be a liar, because someone with no name says so! okay, whatever you say! ha ha ha

One thing I am not and that is a liar.

If you've hard evidence, I'd like to see it and feel free to show the world, as I'm that confident that there is no evidence and you're nothing more than someone looking to discredit me because you're afraid people might actually listen to some real facts.

I've dealt with people like you before....the truth will always conquer all in the end! Now go away you slanderous and poisonous fool.

Reply Posted by Ben on Tuesday December 3 2013 at 14:13
This isn't "just another outlet" for JM to make money off. This is a social enterprise. All the profits from that enterprise will stay within that enterprise. I think it's great that people are coming up with responses to problems that our economic systems are failing to address. We should be careful not to stigmatise these people as "scroungers". There are many people out there who have fallen victim to the harsh realities of living within a free market economy. Instead of kicking them while they're down, it would be nice to see people supporting them to get them back onto the straight and narrow. That's exactly what this enterprise is hoping to do.

Cannot understand what this is all about if you are on benefits, smoke, have i-phone,sky,50" flat screen television, drive a car and find it hard to find things to do during the day why shouldn't you be eligble to cheaper food than people who work on minimum wage who cannot claim access to this. Just past the shop and most of the customers going in were of the smokers,i-phone category. The money spent on opening this shop could have been spent elsewhere go to jack fulton's or the Jot lot in Goldthorpe where you can buy food as cheaply.

Reply Posted by sarah on Tuesday December 3 2013 at 20:41
Its not job lot anymore its something else now. Its a filthy smelly shop selling out of date stuff if the staff smiled hell would freeze over, ive been in once and needed a disinfectant bath when I came home but the locals love it its cheaper than this new shop for them and it sells cheap out of date beer what more could they ask for!

This is a situation that will sort itself out. The folk who are "genuine" benefit claimants, those who try but for one reason or another can't work and have to claim benefits to survive, will benefit from this scheme. They'll eat well and use the advice services to better their situation.
The "not so genuine" benefit claimants who have no interest in being better people or bettering their situation will shun this shop and their "posh food" because they won't understand the concept of quality. Especially if the produce is fresh and therefore they would be a required to actually prepare and cook their meals. They'll still have their kebab meat and chips washed down with white lightening every night while the decent claimants take full advantage of what is essentially a good idea.

We've become a nation of Dog eat Dog typical Tory attitude. You yourself could find yourself unemployed at any time in the future.

this is absolutely ridiculous
why do the benefit scroats have to benefit from a shop like this
what about us working class we deserve the perks
its us what pay the taxes to keep the country running and pay the scroats benefits
the ones that sit at home all day watching tv .drinking bear ,on there play station or doing other useless exercises in life need to get off there backside get out there find a job and have a bit of pride in there life
if it was up to me they wouldn't get a penny unless they did something in the community to earn there benefit
then it might make them think about going out and getting a job that actually pays them a wage so the can fend for themselves and not rely on the tax payer to pay all there bills that they get paid for being on benefits
they need to get a life you benefit scroats

I am on benefits (single mum through no fault of my own) I have 2 children, I attend college, to better myself I have a girl n a boy n live in a 3 bed house I have to pay bedroom tax and I also have bills to pay. It is hard trying to keep your head above water when on benefits I dont wear tracksuits, smoke or go out drinkin every week n I dont own a games console but I do have a smart phone on contract as i cant afford to go out n buy a new phone n top it up everyweek as I feel its important to have a phone incase something was to happen to my children so I can contact people plus its cheaper! I find it unfair that a lot of you working class feel the need to tar us all with the same brush I am working my ass off at college then hopefully goin on to university and get a good job in order to support my children and show them that benefits arent the way to live. Sadly as a single mum it is hard for me to get a job as I am restricted to what hours I can work and have been turned down for jobs after answerin yes to the the question do u have children! I thought that was illegal but apparently not! Because shop owners want reliable staff and apparently if you have children your not realible! I do not lay in bed all day neither do I watch jeremy kyle or any other daytime show but hey im on benefits so what am I saying I MUST BE SCUM its not nice to be labelled but im not a human being am I im a SCROUNGER! You should all be ashamed of yourselves all you that THINK you know everything id like u to walk in my shoes for just one week n see how EASY we have it laying in bed not being able to sleep because your worring whether you've got enough to buy enough food to last you the week until you get the next lot of 150 a week to look after 2 small children yourself and a house and keep the court letters from droppin through your letter box because your robbing peter to pay paul every week. You THINK your well educated because you work and can slate the unemployed GROW UP AND GET A LIFE

Reply Posted by kilkenny on Friday December 6 2013 at 10:12
I want to go on BENEFITS. Are the following statements true?

1. On payment of your first benefit cheque you get a huge flat-screen TV.

2. You get 200 cigs every time you sign on

3. After signing on for a whole year, you have a choice of a BMW or Mercedes car?

4. You get vouchers every other week from JD Wetherspoons to spend in a pub of your choice.

Well the thick folk on WAB seem to think so.
'I work so hard' Bleat bleat bleat. Well you obviously don't work hard enough if you can't afford to buy you family 'luxurys'. It is 'luxuries' by the way. Go back into education and get a better paid job. Or move to the South where salaries are higher.

Just heard about this new concept for what is basically a charging food bank and having just read all the comments posted. I feel i have to give two examples of people being on benefits and scrounging from the government.

Example 1
Male Age 61 worked all life from being 15. Made redundant this year. Receives pension of £79 per week. Can't receive any benefits except housing benefit which is reduced because gets £ 8 per week more than Job Seekers Allowance. Also has to pay £ 40 per month Council tax. After paying all his bills (does NOT have Sky, Smart phone etc) has £ 11 per month for food!! Has just had Hip Replacement so can't work at the moment. NO EXTRA BENEFITS (as mentioned in previous posts) GIVEN TO HIM. A supermarket like this would be of help to him. (His ex-wife supports him with food and looked after him when he came out of hospital so he didn't impinge on the NHS having carers etc)

Example 2
Female Age 55 again worked all life. Just made redundant. Rents flat

Rent is £ 425 Housing Benefit received £ 365 Pays £ 20 month Council Tax

Receives £ 285 per month Job Seekers so is left with £ 205 per month. Basically £ 50 per week to pay ALL bills (Gas Elec. Phone. AND Bus fares for interviews. Clothes and anything else that may crop up) and with what is left to buy food. A supermarket like this would be of help to her.

Neither smoke and can't afford to drink....don't wear Trackies nor have Smart cars, Big TV's or anything else that some of these people have commented about on here. Yet they are tarred with the same brush.

Wake up the mis-informed people on here there is no "Smelling the Roses" when you are on benefits. The vast majority of people want jobs but those jobs may not be there.

Reply Posted by Light Is On on Tuesday December 10 2013 at 15:28
@Jumblesail.

I agree with both examples you posted, both are indeed in need of a source of food like the supermarket in discussion. As you can see from my initial post, I made it clear I don't have anything against people such as this the right to use such services.

However...it would appear that you sir/madam, are the greatly misinformed one in this discussion. And I mean, greatly. "The vast majority of people want jobs but those jobs may not be out there". Incorrect. I was born in the 80's, and unfortunately or not (whichever way you choose to see it) - I hail from a generation where it is perceived as 'normal' to NOT work and sit around in the pub/on the PlayStation whilst claiming benefits. If you genuinely believe that the "VAST majority are looking for work" then you are severely misinformed. Sadly, the two examples you quoted are the VAST MINORITY.

Reply Posted by Yumyum on Monday December 9 2013 at 13:48
I have to say I've worked in the pub trade for 15 years and the only ones that can afford to drink in the day time and I mean all day! Are the ones on benefits, with more kids than I care to think about, I'm sure there are some that genuinely want a job, but sadly not the ones I see every day.

Reply Posted by Craig on Monday December 9 2013 at 18:14
SIMPLE SOLUTION : Don't pay benefits higher than what you would earn doing 39 hours a week on minimum wage. EASY !!!!!

Reply Posted by voice of reason on Monday December 9 2013 at 19:47
I work full time, get no handouts and pay huge taxes which go to paying handouts for scroungers with loads of kids who have no intention of getting a job and whose primary aimis to have more money for cigs and booze. I ddo my shopping at great value stores like jack Fulton and heron foods, who currently sell supermarket excess products to everybody, discriminating against nobody. Does this mean that benefits claimants will now get all my affordable luxuries. It is time these people stopped breeding and got a job.
