Barnsley Restaurant Shines At Awards

Tuesday November 26 2013

A BARNSLEY restaurant has been judged not just the best in South Yorkshire - but also better than any in Humberside as well.

It was double delight for the Dil Raj in Dodworth at the finals of the national Asian Curry Awards.

The restaurant was named best restaurant and chef Mohammed Al Aman was also named best chef in South Yorkshire and Humberside.

Owner Miron Rahman said the double victory at the ceremony at the Grosvenor House hotel in London's Park Lane was 'absolutely wonderful'.

Miron has owned Dil Raj, based in the former Horse and Jockey pub in Dodworth, for the past ten years.

He said: "We pride ourselves on the quality of our food and that's been reflected in winning these two top trophies.

"We offer a menu far beyond what may be considered traditional Indian cuisine. With attention to health and diet our dishes don’t use heavy oils, creams or spices, but instead rely on the authentic flavours of the dish.

"It was a very special occasion with the best possible outcome. We will be putting both trophies on display in the restaurant so our customers can share our happiness.

"Over the years Dil Raj has been privileged to have received some fantastic reviews and a number of awards, but this is the best yet."

Royal Spice Darton is 1,000,000 times better food, cheaper and so much more relaxing with larger tables n space between the tables

I agree, the buffet there is brill. But the Shabanna near Wakey Asda is by far the nicest indian I have tasted, their exclusive dishes are all absolutley georgeous (esp the Syletti which I have never found in another indian but it is lush)

the curries are nice but the prices arnt. The Balti Palace Wombwell are better priced and the food is just as good if not better in some cases..

Well done Dil Raj, for you food and the awards you have received. Also well done for remaining stoic and determined to achieve in one of the most bigoted and racist areas of the country

I ate here many years ago and it was delicious but ordered a take away from here a while back and it was rank, I couldn't eat it. Akbars in Bradford is by far the best Indian meal I have ever had and I travel from Barnsley especially for it. Have been a dozen times and have never been disappointed.

Akbars is Pakistani food mate, still bloody fantastic though.

Dil raj are infamous for scribbling extra items on your bill that are unreadable and charging for them in the hope that people won't notice! And miserable staff!

Arkaans @ Ackworth is our favorite by far - very friendly staff - its also BYOBooze (a good idea) and cash only
We also enjoy takeaways from Thaal at Darfield - food is brilliant, staff are untrained and don't seem to speak English

Well done to the Dil Raj, never had a bad meal or take away. It may not be the cheapest but it is by far the best in the area in my opinion. Every dish is different, none of that core spice mix that means every dish in lesser restaurants tastes the same. The Dil Raj won't be for everyone, but for those of us that love it..keep on turning out excellent food with wonderful service from Gorgeous George and the team.

I wasn't impressed with the food or the service, staff seemed a little offish. Royal Spice at Darton is way better with just as good food for better price. I've eaten Curries growing up in Sheffield and Royal Spice are as good as it gets at this end of the M1...

It was nice to see this Muslim win this restaurant award. Many Brits are xenophobic.
