Supermarket Plans Could Be Shelved

Thursday November 28 2013

THERE are fears plans for a supermarket on a former school site could be shelved.

Kier Property Developments was granted permission in March for a supermarket, petrol station, health centre and more than 140 houses on the former Royston High School site - in spite of 300 letters of objection.

Although building work has started on the houses, the health centre has been dropped from the development.

Now it's rumoured the supermarket plan is also about to be abandoned - with the possibility that could lead to even more new houses on the site.

Cllr Tim Cheetham said: "At the time of the application we were told there was great interest from a supermarket chain - but now we're hearing that no supermarket wants to know."

If it was a Sainsbury's and the Pub/Restaurant was good - I would consider buying one of these, I thought I would keep renting but the plans for this development looked like it may be worth taking the plunge.

Aren't people complaining that there isn't enough housing in Barnsley? Surely more housing would therefore be a good thing?

There are new supermarkets being developed, so what exactly is the issue here?

Surely people can understand that the area IS being invested in under this new government.....surely?

The key thing here is the council decided Royston needed a huge morrisons without actually consulting any residents (funny old thing) as the objection letters have proved, the village doesn't want a supermarket! Whilst small stores Royston does already have a co-op, Asda & sainsburys and village shops. A huge supermarket would simply have killed off any small business in the village.
It's about time Barnsley council did thorough research and consultation before making decisions for people. Royston is after all a VILLAGE! Not a town or city, they should be doing more to encourage local business!
Rant over!

If BMBC wanted to improve Royston they should destroy all of the slum housing ,kick the slumlords who rent to lets be honest DOLEY DRUG TAKING THIEVES and build new social housing thats affordable to buy or housing associations who have a policy of evicting slum tenants if they cause any trouble to there nieghbours

Actually to add to this, here's an idea!
Why don't the council return some of this land to green belt to replace what they forcibly took to build the monstrosity is Carlton CC!!! No-one wanted this school on this land but it still went ahead. The school was billed as an Eco school which would blend in with it's green belt surroundings. I'd love the council to explain how they think this awful block of black does that exactly?!

The council are run by half wits who are not worth paying with buttons but worst of all they think were the same . considering they needed the money off the land to pay for that failing school at carlton the council would have let anyone buy that land . Mark my word's its going to be all housing as the other stuff the dumb ass council asked to be put in were just to get locals on side .

During many of the 'consultations' around the Carlton CC being built the councillors stated that there would be a gain as far as 'Green land@ was concerned, the fields of the 2 old schools would be left as fields - green land. The only place they would build is the footprint of the schools demolished. I know I smelled something in the Church Hall near Far Lawns all those years ago!

I lived in Royston for the vast majority of my life, it is a wonderful village and has loads of wonderful people who I am glad to have met, the school should not have been demolished in the first place and the land should have been turned into a park or just left as green fields or used as an extension to the Leisure Center as football pitches etc. Royston doesn't need more quickly built houses that nobody wants.

What do you expect . The cheethams are on the gravy train ,taking as much out of the system as they can .But doing very little for it. Cheetham doesn,t care about Royston or anyone in it . Cheetham cares about Cheetham period !
