BREAKING: Location For New Gypsy Site Revealed

Wednesday January 11 2012

Tim Cheetham Tim Cheetham

BARNSLEY Council has revealed the suggested location of a new traveller site for Barnsley after it emerged that it has won a grant of £800,000 from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

A spokesman said that - subject to planning approval - the new, permanent site of ten pitches will be located on land off Sandygate Lane at Stairfoot.

Coun Tim Cheetham said: “Detailed work will now take place for consideration by Barnsley’s planning committee later in the year, including consultation with the local community.

“If approved, the new site at Stairfoot will reduce the level of unauthorised encampments within the borough, and put the council in a stronger position at planning appeal hearings regarding unauthorised gypsy and traveller site developments.”

Barnsley has one other council gypsy and traveller site at Smithies and a small number of private sites, but these are no longer sufficient to meet the demand for pitches.

It is anticipated planning approval for the site at Stairfoot will be sought in the autumn, with an anticipated completion date of late summer 2013.

Y can they spend all that money on this when surrounding areas are still awaiting flood defences since 2007 darfield was like an island every exit was blocked.

Reply Posted by Guestymcguest on Wednesday January 11 2012 at 15:03
marmaduke, it says that they won the funding from HCA, they have to spend it on the traveller site, although I'm still mystified as to 5 years on how darfield still has inadequate flood defenses. I by no means support this site or unauthorised traveller sites at all due to the rubbish and costs, but from a program I saw I gather that local councils have strict targets to provide traveller sites. At least if there is a permanent site then there will be less at the side of the road. like the site near monk bretton priory.  Barnsley Council once again going ahead with things without thought the public. So they have announced the site, yet it is still subject to planning approval. who approves planning? The council. It will be steamrolled through.

and they wont pay there fu__ing council tax either

Reply Posted by Guest on Wednesday January 11 2012 at 15:53
Why are they making a permanent site?  Travellers are supposed to travel. The area has enough crime already without building a cesspit full of people that have no regards for anyone that isn't their "own".

Finds all this fuss unbelievable. The vast majority of travellers are decent folk. Like within any society, there will always be those that step outside of the law. Disenfranchising kids from a base and a decent education is wrong, maybe even snobbish - as to who should be part of our schools and our kids lives. Speaking for Barnsley? Not me, but neither should others, and they shouldn't make threats on my behalf! Have a broader mind, and let this community fulfil their genuine potential.

The young kids in the area need to be instructed how to avoid the speeding stolen cars that will be chased back to the site by the traffic police. I cannot see this site being any different to the others on the Police Stop Series but we never know maybe this one will be really special. It's just something else that they will have to prepare for

Nothing against the travelling community, but the mess they created and NEVER tidied up was ridiculous...on many journeys past the site there were bags and rubbish just flying in the road.....seems double standards are in place when people in the town centre get fined for throwing wrappers etc, and nothing was done against the rubbish on the site!!!!!

Reply Posted by Localresident on Wednesday January 11 2012 at 17:47
They are decent folk, but there's no denying that its their beliefs and lifestyle separates them from the local residents.....the mess they created whilst at Stairfoot before was ridiculous, any other resident having that mess in their garden/driveway would have been evicted.......

Everyone has a right to live the life their heritage determines, it is easy to class one group as all the same but this isn't the case all are different and individual.

Some unofficial sites will be littered with rubbish as they don't have refuse collection as we do - The Children Act 1989/2004 clearly states that all children residing in or resorting to an area have the right to sanitary arrangements, fresh drinking water and refuse collection - so they should have portaloo toilets, a stand pipe and some means of collecting rubbish - but unfortunately this doesn't happen.

A permanent official site allows for children growing up and marrying to live close by their extended family.Well done to Barnsley for considering additional places for Travellers - I have worked with Gypsy Travellers for a number of years - there is no sex outside marriage, families support each other, the children may run around without shoes but they are what makes the family rich - to have healthy children and a good man who earns a living. There is very little evidence of abuse of any kind and sexual abuse is totally taboo - so some good points that we may need to compare with the settled population. As with any group of people a few bad apples give a bad name to all the group - we shouldn't generalise or stereotype. Barnsley you have my vote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My views may generate a lot of opposition but i do know what i am talking about after several years of working closely with this very much marginalised group.

Unfortunately the council has been made to provide more sites. This is the case across the country. Wherever they put them people will not be happy due to the travellers reputation and behaviour. People may make racist or small minded comments but in reality they are concerned about crime, litter and clashes between travellers and non travellers.

Don't pay tax, don't travell, what more can I say!!!!!

Reply Posted by Jillian Butler on Wednesday January 11 2012 at 20:35
Locals views will be ignored as always and the travellers kids will be then given priority to 1 of the best primary schools in the borough Oakhill!! So they kids of parents who pay their taxes will be denied that chance......This may not be the politically correct thing to say but its the truth !

"Everyone has a right to live the life their heritage determines"

Well send them all back to f***king Ireland - there are plenty of laybys over there to occupy.
They are called TRAVELERS for a reason - but the council are making them SETTLERS

Surprise, surprise... no talk of putting the site in Barnsley west then?  I think this is what gets up people's noses the most.  There are certain areas of Barnsley that are always targeted for projects such as these & for a change it would be nice to see Penistone, Silkstone, Hoylandswaine etc taking their share of the not-so-nice-to-have-on-your-doorstep projects.

People will be put off going on that part of the nearby Trans Pennine Trail, same as people didn't like going past the site when it was close to the Mill of Black Monks on Grange Lane.

Lets see if we can get McDonalds on our side, they won't want the Bin-dippers either!

That's an excellent point. Barnsley West or sheffield as some penistone residents like to think they belong to these days never ever get anything that would upset them, Is that because the majority of councillors and the well heeled free dinner clubbers are from? I wonder

Stick em all in Cawthorne, Silkstone or Ingbirchworth there's plenty of open space round there

Travellers in Barnsley commit far higher levels of crime than anyone else in the area.

Travellers in Barnsley continually commit burglary, car theft, drug dealing offenses and violent disorder offences at a FAR HIGHER rate than the regional average. It might not be politically correct to say this but this is the TRUTH, just check the criminal convictions of virtually EVERY travelling man on traveller sites in Barnsley!

Travellers are in fact just a criminal gang and we shouldn't have to tolerate them. You wouldn’t expect the council to pay for a Mafia campsite on your door step or for a pack of Hell's Angels to move in over the road, you shouldn't tolerate the council using your money to house travelling criminal fraternities in your communities either.

The effect of a travelling site in every single part of the country that has one has been an increase in local crime, in drug dealing, car crime and assaults.

If you live in stairfoot it's really important to stand up to the council and protest against this proposed camp now, before you have to endure all the aggravation and criminality that this camp will bring.

If you can't halt this site life in Stairfoot will badly affected permanently.

Are these statements based on facts? Serious question. Because if they are it will be worthwhile looking at the crime map of the area at the moment.  and then 12 months down the line after.

On another note the suggested site has been labelled inadequate following a site survey. If this goes ahead it will be a real travesty.

Get your facts straight, being a traveller isn't the same as being in the mafia or jells angels, they are choices if u are a traveller u are born one it is a race just like being black or white, and there are travelling men that commit crime but not all of them and how dare u tar all travellers with the same brush! I suppose the women and children are out dug dealing and robbing people aswell are they?? I bet your gutted that hitler didn't wipe us all out as planned aren't you.

The majority of travellers pay tax as the majority of travellers live on either council sites (which is the same as renting a council house) or have there own land which they have to pay tax for.

I suspect this will go ahead, anyway. Trying to see both sides I would like to suggest a monthly meeting of travellers and residents overseen by the authorities. Residents can put forward their concerns and the travellers can put their minds at rest. And vice versa the travellers can report any undue hassle from residents and the differences ironed out peacefully under the watchful eyes of the authorities.

My facts ARE straight.
Gypsies in the Britian DO have rates of criminal offending far higher than the national average for UK citizens.
I'm not making this up, this is the TRUTH.
The percentage of gypsies with criminal convictions for theft, burglary, violent offences and car theft IS far higher in all of these categories than it is for non-gypsies. If you don't believe me just check court records.

Reply Posted by Tyke on Monday February 13 2012 at 15:14
Unfortunately these figures are only too true!

Ask anyone living near a gypsy camp about the amount of increased crime there has been. Plus the intimidation caused by travellers who often seek to settle disputes with fist fights.

Why can't the travellers go on the council list like anybody else who wants to reside here, probably frightened of getting split up but we would sleep easier in our beds if they were.

Anybody heard about the 2 proposed gypsy sites at West Darfield and Shaw Lane, Carlton? The one at Darfield is where the old filling station used to be and the entrance is supposed to be coming out on Genoa in the Italian estate. Our properties which most home owners are spending money out to up-keep them and make them look nice will de-value immediately. These sites shouldn't even be considered near a private housing estate.

Reply Posted by Freedom on Tuesday August 7 2012 at 10:10
I have heard about the one in Darfield. This will de value the italian estate substantially. This is one of the nicest areas in darfield to be spoilt. There is lovely walking around this area which I do on a daily basis. If anyone thinks I will be walking around there with that to spoil it.I dont think so. I am sure I am not the only one going to be fighting to have this stopped in Darfield. Darfield use to be a local village for local people only. I have lived there all my life and hardly know anyone, Half of them cant even speak bloody English And to top my anger off I have heard about making the playing field into a housing estate. Where the hell is local people going to go, That field is not only used by football teams, its used by local people walking their dogs, kids playing, If this is removed for a housing estate Darfield will not be the same. Moan over!!

Whats the site at the side of sash near grimethorpe?? there looks to be semi permanent buildings have I missed the point or does gypsy mean traveller or does it mean settle on any bit of land that you want then claim it as your own, dont pay any Tax, and take anything that is not yours

Three assaults and a 'hit and run' from my experience with gypsy travellers and though I have 1 or 2 mates travellers that are decent the rest have all been complete plonkers. Several got raided in darfield last year and lots of full bore weapons were found. Pussyfoot around it all you like but the problems are still their and they rarely get caught too driving round with duplicate plates and hitting anyone that disagrees with them. Heckling people for no reason from vans in the street and the minute you call them on it your kicked in and left at the side of the road. Even the children are raised to have no respect for anybody else's stuff and the sad thing is your all too scared to say it.
I understand its not all of them and some of what I say maybe innacurate but it's not that far from the truth. See whether people are defending them still when its their child in the back of a car when they're driving like idiots just to show off and nearly take you off the road skipping lanes at harborough hills.
