Communities Minister Andrew Stunell announced the funding this weekend as part a multi-million national scheme. He said: "It will assist hundreds of traveller families find sites where they want to live and foster better relations with the existing communities and councils.

What about people on the council housing list that have no chance of getting a council house as there all taken up? What about places like Barnsley Hospice that are desparate for funds? I could name 1000 more worthy causes to spend the money on apart from a travellers site.  Maybe we should all buy a caravan & quit our jobs we would all be better looked after

The travelling community have as much right to be housed as any other family in Britain. Like the thousands clogging up the waiting lists for housing and can't be arsed to find work. Also I think you'll find a lot of them are of British or Irish backgrounds and earn money themselves. I live in Ireland where there's a massive travelling community and none of them have ever done me a wrong turn

omg so confused about this one what was the wrong with developing their original sire more land= more money when money is tight is this out of a specific fund that couldnt be spent on homeless people kids orphans kids in care? where will it be ? to those who say travelers dont take hand outs and earn their own money then my question is why cant they buy their own land?? I have known some travelers and they are quite resourceful and are equally able to get on the housing list as others I have known some who have,.. is it fair that some should wait on a list with the rest of society, whilst others get bought their own land, it seems unfair to everyone to me but I am open to comments.x

I thought the idea of a travelling community is just that - a community that travels, spending a few nights here and a few nights there.   If that's the case why the need for bricks and mortar?  A camp site providing adequate facilities where they could dump their waste and top up their water, shower, do their washing etc FOR A FEE would cost council a lot less.  Surely if they want to settle in an area and "foster better relations with the existing communities and councils" then they should put their names on the housing list and wait their turn along with everyone else, then accept the first property they are offered, instead of segregating themselves from the existing local community. And will they be paying for the privilege of staying on this site or will the council be meeting the ongoing costs of running the site? I pay my council tax and water rates for my home but it costs me a fortune when I pack my tent and camping gear into the car and decide to spend a few days away from home on a camp site - why should the travelling community have money spent on them that, as others so rightly point out, could be put to use in other needy areas within our community?
