Taxi Marshal Scheme Could Be Extended

Monday January 9 2012

A SCHEME which saw taxi marshals help drunk revellers get a legitimate lift home may continue into 2012.

Taxi marshals stationed on ranks at New Street and Midland Street over Christmas and New Year helped keep order in taxi queues by dealing with any altercations and creating an orderly line for the drivers.

The arrangement worked so well that hackney cabs refused to pick up at unauthorised ranks elsewhere in the town centre – from where the waiting public were directed to the Midland Street rank.

Coun Charles Wraith, Chairman of the General Licensing Board, said: “They were professional and efficient, creating safe and well-functioning ranks. They received positive comments from the public on the nights, praising their efforts and acknowledging that people felt much safer when the marshals were on the ranks.

“It is hoped to keep up the momentum of the taxi marshals’ success and plan for future marshals in the town centre throughout the year. If the public feel safe using the town’s hackney carriage ranks they will be encouraged to use the town centre and increase the night time economy, benefiting not only the taxi trade but also the struggling pub trade.”

The marshals also found what they thought was two illegal taxis - these are now being investigated.
