Barnsley Dentist Set For Crown Court Sentencing

Barnsley Magistrates' Court Barnsley Magistrates' Court

A BARNSLEY dentist pleaded guilty at court for continuing to treat patients despite not being registered.

Mum-of-two Jane Penvose, 43, of Carrfield Close, was removed from the General Dentist Council’s register in August 2012 for non-payment of her annual retention fee.

A dental practitioner for 24 years, Penvose forged a General Dental Council certificate when her membership lapsed.

Jayne Ormrod, prosecuting at Barnsley Magistrates' Court, said: "Some £23,400 in wages was obtained by this woman. There may have been other costs incurred by the small practice she worked for."

Philip Stables, defending, said there had been no complaints from patients about Penvose.

He said: "Mrs Penvose had to get the certification to carry on practising. She did not have the money to do so.

"She made a clumsy attempt to cover that up because of financial problems after her husband lost his job."

Penvose admitted two charges of fraud by false representation and illegally practising dentistry. She will be sentenced for the two frauds at Sheffield Crown Court on November 22.

Penvose, who was granted unconditional bail, was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge for illegally practising dentistry.

If they do a good job and offer a good service to the public then why should health professionals have to pay to work, does a police officer ? does a teacher ? does a politician ? NO, Then why make these professional who are often needed most

This woman was not greedy! She is a victim of some silly "General Dentist Council’s register" which probably charges a fortune for very little output. Too many chiefs, NOT ENOUGH INDIANS if you ask me!

The woman broke the law, you may not agree with the law, but it is there for a reason. Yes other professions have to pay to work, eg nurses.
It is not a vast amount of money they have to pay and she is a Dentist and they are not poorly paid anyway.

Mark: I'm guessing your not in the nursing profession as the NMC keep increasing the amount paid each year. They so very kindly capped it for this year and decided not to go for the £125 payment but kept it at £100 to register for the year. When you consider this is still more than what nurses used to pay to be registered for three years, how is this not a vast amount of money. I do not have this amount of money to pay out of a monthly wage, and have to budget some away each month as otherwise wouldn't be able to do the job I live and trained to do. Dread to think how much a dentist and gp have to pay to remain registered. They should scrap the payment altogether like they did for teachers. Don't get me wrong I am not condoning what she did in anyway. Thankfully it's not something that we would get away with as there are mangers that so very kindly remind us to pay and check that we have. Why were they not picking this up and checking the register??

I personally know Jane and she is such a professional person who i admire. Jane tried her hardest to carry on working in the profession she loved. However, Jane was let down by personal reasons that i will not go into. Jane is the most loyal person i have ever met in my life. Jane tried her hardest to be the main breadwinner and to protect her family. Yes you may argue she was silly to do what she will have thought things will get better but they never did. Don't ever think Jane to be a criminal as she is so beautiful inside and out and so very, very comfortable in her role. I should know, i used to be her dental nurse. So committed to her patients and the most loyal person i have ever met. She and her family have been let diwn by the system. Why should she have to pay to register? Why can't they drop annual fees? Why has this happened? Hane deserves more, her family deserve more and her patients will miss her. Top treatment given at all times along with pure professionalism. Her nightmare began when she couldn't afford to pay her annual fees. She had to live, she had to provide. Jane doesn't deserve this at all.
