Christmas Lights Switch-On Details - A WAB Guide

Thursday November 7 2013

PINGU, DJ Simon Hirst, Corrie's Jack P Shepherd and Bobby Hassell will all be in Barnsley to switch two sets of Christmas lights on.

On Wednesday, November 20, both Barnsley town centre and the Alhambra's lights will be switched on.

Town Hall

From 5pm, Dearne FM will be playing all the Christmas classics to get people in the mood for the festive season before Mayor Ken Richardson, DJ Simon Hirst and Pingu switch on the lights.

The town centre will be illuminated at 6pm, followed by a fireworks display from the top of the Town Hall.

There will be live music from Barnsley band Undafret.

There will also be children's rides in the town centre and late night shopping until 7.30pm and Experience Barnsley will also be staying open until the same time.

The event will call for road closures to be in place from 9.30am to 10pm and vehicle users are asked to note that between these times the following roads will be affected:

Church Street (from Eastgate to Shambles Street)
Sadler Gate (full length)
St Mary's Gate (full length)

A diversion will be in place along Old Mill Lane, Harborough Hill Road, Westway and Shambles Street.

Kendray Street (from Midland Street to Eldon Street), Eldon Street (full length) and Market Hill (full length) will also be closed between 5.55pm and 6.15pm.

Alhambra

Down at the Alhambra, Coronation Street's Jack P Shepherd, Reds legend Bobby Hassell and up and coming star Darren Sawdon will switch the shopping centre's lights on.

Jack, 25, who has played David Platt on the popular soap since 2000, will join the two local lads to turn them on from 6pm.

Fantastic news. Really good idea about the fireworks on top of town hall. It's the icon of Barnsley.

and who is paying for this.i will tell you who is paying for this carnival of fools.its us the tax payers.we got families who are living on the breadline, their benifits have been stopped by our nazi goverment so people and kids go hungry, are these people looking forward to christmas,no they are not.but what does barnsley care for these people,it doesnt.it would rather spend money dressing this dump of a town up and paying crap actors other than helping its own people.

People will always be poor and you do feel extremely sorry for the genuine cases. Many people choose to f**k up their own lives though, and you need to be able to distinguish between the two. Having said that, Christmas is probably the one time of year when you can forget your problems and spend a couple of hours getting into the spirit of things. Our Christmas this year will take place thanks to doorstep loans, which will take half a year to pay back, but no matter what, we will be in the town centre cheering on these 'crap' actors! It's what you do.Your message reads as if you probably do not have kids or grandkids, but if you do, bite the bullet and get 'em down there. Despite not being that well off, we will never sacrifice the 'Most wonderful time of the year' ... Fill your heart with a bit of cheer Barnsley Bob. There's always the other 364 days of the year to worry and get depressed about the economy/government. Looking forward to taking the kids and grandkids for an evening out. Merry Christmas Baarnsley Bob!

couldn't have put it better myself rotherham santa! Yes there will always be poor people, but then there are poor ppl who sit n dwel n moan about it, and theres poor ppl who make the best of what they've got! If you're a bah humbug type of person you're spoiling the Christmas spirit for your own kids, all by yourself. The town lights are there for everyone to enjoy regardless of income. It is FREE, ya just need to stop moaning n get off your back sides n get down there for the kids!

barnsley bob i never thought id agree with anything you had to say but what you said in your post above is true.barnsley doesnt give a toss about its own people.it would rather spend the tax payers money on stupid statues, fountains and that monstrosity outside the town hall than help those familes without food or heating this xmas.shame on barnsley.

Reply Posted by barnsley bob on Thursday November 7 2013 at 11:17
tracy try telling those without food and heating its christmas and they should cheer up,what have they to be cheerful about.i dont call sitting in a cold house with hungry kids over the christmas period anything to be cheerful about.

so shall we just cancel christmas barnsley bob? I totally get your point but life goes on. Yes a lot of ppl are on the poverty line, myself I am not far from it, but it doesn't mean that our kids have to know. Christmas is magical it comes at the same time every year so we should be well prepared to make the best of it one can. It doesn't have to be all about money and for some kids (of all ages) to see the lights switched on, the festive crowds and the music... it is for them a magical time, maybe even the high light of Christmas. To all those who moan about the government, the council and how they spend money, yes to a point I agree... But let the KIDS stay innocent of this, they will have their time to worry about finances when they have kids of their own. As for the people of Barnsley who care about those without food or heating, why not take a packet of food to the food bank, a pair of inexpensive slippers or a good condition blanket you don't need. Put £2.00 on a elderly neighbours electricity meter.. Please stop with the bah humbug and do something the government isn't.. be kind to someone this Christmas :)

What we can do is to vote this goverment out the next election and put an end to the witch hunt of the unemployed and those on sickness benifits.

Reply Posted by Long John Silver on Wednesday November 20 2013 at 10:51
definitely. This country is on it's arse and it's the fault of successive shitty governments. Just because you don't like the measures this govt are having to take, it's no reason to vote in those that caused the mess.

I don't think Barnsley Bob understands how the whole 'government funding' thing works...

We have funding for different things, and you can't go spending events funding on the homeless. Pop your tampon back in, have a snickers and calm the *censored* down.

well said carol.its time people took off their rose tainted glasses and see what exactly is happening in britain today.i bet cameron and his bunch of yes men wouldnt like if they had to spend everyday of their miserable lives in a cold house with no food and little kids to care for.its this goverment that is slowly but surely destroying britain and the lives of the true british people.

I'm sorry but I do not know anyone, who knows anyone who can't put food on the table. Heating is a different story however and I can honestly say it's not on in my house unless we're still cold after snuggling up in jumpers and extra socks! If there really are ppl who live without food and heating, how is that possible? Are we talking about ppl who are not working? I feel terribly sorry for ppl who have to live like that, and by no fault of their own are not working (yes I've been there too!), But I have to say that for the rest of us, we still like to watch fire work displays, see the Christmas lights etc. I work to make ends meet and like most I struggle at this time of year, but why should all of us have to do without these public celebrations just because some ppl struggle more than others?

maxine its not just barnsley that is affected by this goverments cruel treatment of needy people.what is the goverment doing to help the,m better theirselves, nothing.how is making the unemployed pick up litter for their dole momey going to make things better for the old and the generally ill,how far do they think a family of fours benifit money goes, they have to buy food, pay their bills and trh to clothe their kids the best they can.nothing is sadder than having social services take a families kids of them because some so called do gooder has phoned social services and reported the parents because they think their kids look underfed when the truth is its hard to manage on the little money they get.

This thread is one of the most depressing things I have ever read. Making jokes about Remploy isn't really on. Do you know it is 2013? Ever heard of Equality and Diversity?

There are plenty of things around to help them but if their not willing to do it for themsleves them noone else can. yes the goverment need a good kick up the backsides and half the shit they have taken off them but nothing will unless we stand up and unite as a team and stand up for what is right but no one does they just sit back and moan. end of rant

I don't usually do this comments or reactions thing to WAB.. but I think you all need a reality check here... Christ..Mas is about a Christian celebration celebrating the birth of one person.. not presents.. not politics..not fireworks or who gets the best toys.. not Pingu or Simon Hurst.. or whether.. we are hot or cold.. How many of you will celebrate the true spirit of Christmas by calling to see if a neighbour is OK and wishing them Merry Christmas.. take a plate of Christmas dinner to an pensioner living alone.. give up dinner to feed the homeless at a shelter!! Treat the kids to Midnight Mass instead off fireworks.. or just have a midnight family get together if your not religious without loads of trimmings.. just simple.. we celebrate Christmas for the birth of Christ .. not the Hype so if you don't believe in the reason.. why celebrate.. why get in debt???? Barr Humbug!!

Cause it's not going to get you any where and for your info the government DOES NOT pay for it the council do! Grow up honest to god all this over a festive get together and it doesn't really matter who turns them on does it?? What matters is that families enjoy them selves not who pays for what or politics rows!!! Grip needed end of!!

I love the idea of Simon n co from Capital fronting the event, also pingu as the younger townsfolk will love himbut yeah...Jack P Shepherd??? Why?? Cant see the attraction personally. Oh, and bring on the fireworks, fab!!! For those of you posting about money been better spent on benefits then you can shove those opinions where the sun don't shine. Why should my kids miss out on festive celebrations in favour of benefit scroungers. I say cut benefits this Christmas and give it to the elderly to fund their heating bills instead, now that's a warming idea ;)

U all want to get a grip, least something is getting done in our town, or maybe people would prefer to see the town hall boarded up, like a lot of shops. Everyone is struggling and it's not going to be an easy ride. What people call poor, isn't all that poor if people smoke, drink beer, have sky tv etc. the unemployed expect alive time of luxury , while the workers keep working, just saying

Reply Posted by amz on Tuesday November 19 2013 at 11:05

Do u imbeciles not realise by putting money into the town and doing things up like the town hall it attracts more custom to our town, u give money to the poor and believe me they would not use it for whats best for them, however filtering money through businesses etc helps all the town flourish!!

Why is it all about poverty !!!!, i say good on ya Barnsley, and if ya so skint ya cant afford a christmas then, stub out ya smoke, put down ya can and get off ya arse and go and get a job !!!!, yeah us tax payers are paying for the fireworks and christmas light and probably everything else, but were also paying for folks to claim benefits !!!!!!!!!!!

I've known what it's like to be without money at christmas, and my children did not always get the best presents and yes other children did poke fun at them for not having as much, but i believe it is up to parents to make sure that if their children are fortunate to have lots of nice things, they explain that it is cruel to taunt those with less. Unfortunately a lot of parents encourage their children to taunt those with less and these are the children who turn into uncaring adults.
As for the "nobodies" that are doing the switch on, many years ago, an unknown band performed at one of our local school, they were nobodies, but the kids loved them. The band were called Take That.

Thank-you
