Barnsley Pub Demolished

AN iconic Barnsley pub where Kes was filmed has been demolished.

The Dards in Cudworth closed its doors in April.

Its ex-licensee Adele Sellars, 48, had her own bid for the pub rejected and said she was worried the 'landmark' building could be knocked down.

Sadly, the building has now been demolished.

Local lad Thomas Agus said he saw an opportunity for investment to develop the site and set up ATTA Properties Ltd with friend Andy Thompson.

Several parties have been interested in the land, Mr Agus said, ranging from bedsits to flats and a local shopping store.

He said there was little interest in reopening it as a pub.

"Before we decided to buy the property we didn't want to see it be converted to bedsits, flats or a shopping centre.

"The building may look the same from the outside, but it would lose its soul.

"Therefore we decided the best option would be for the building to be demolished."

Well, the building looked sound in structure and I really did think that it was the best looking building around Cudworth/Grimey/Shafton and that area.
Its a crying shame that it could not be used as something usefull. We dont seem to have many good looking buildings left nowdays. Look at the new school!! Prefab springs to mind. Hope its not flats/supermarket that will be built thier.

There's a lot of people complaining about the dards being pulled down and how much of a good pub it was.if it was that good and all the people complaining went for a drink in it there would be no need to pull it down. Would there?

Its more about the actual building, it was lovely. Looks like the village pubs are a thing of the past.

so true g&t,i also miss the village pub,but sadly people think is the cheap beer sold at supermarkets,i myself don,t think that,i think the smoking ban and the greedy taxman, also rents on pubs were very expensive and landlords sadly could not make it pay,,

I agree peter in part. They could have tried keeping the old tap room going. I also think as alcohol became more accessible folk just pick it up with their shop. I miss the pubs, the catching up with pals and going trundling home with a ten Bob wobble on. Miss it,but I doubt we,all see it again.

As an ex landlord i know all about greedy pub companies who are based miles and miles away, so not interested in your local comunity only profit, increased rents leading to expensive beer prices, the landlord has to eat but cant for these greedy people, i know i,ve been there.

Another pub that turned into a dump, full of drunken idiotic kids & oxygen-thieves looking for trouble. That's why it's flattened to rubble

TURN AWAY FROM THE DEMON DRINK-PUT YOUR TRUST IN GOD AND HE WILL HELP FIGHT THE CRAVING TO DRINK AND STOP YOU FALLING INTO SATANS TRAP FOR MANKIND.

For all the negative comments about the Dards, the new landlady who took over last November did her best to make improvements and get the place back on its feet. The only reason she gave up is because the brewery sold it from under her, they even turned her offer to buy down, just more greed on breweries part. As for ATTA ltd (local lads) they should be ashamed for demolishing such an iconic building. Another part of Cuworths history gone forever.

Dazza 80 % of pubs owned by breweries are making a loss for what reason. The land the pub is on is worth more to breweries than rent from the pub. That's Why 90 per week are closing.
