Police Boss Labels Force's Performance As 'Unacceptable'

Wednesday October 30 2013

Shaun Wright Shaun Wright

POLICE chief Shaun Wright has branded the performance of the South Yorkshire force as ‘unacceptable’.

The force is one of the worst five in the country in terms of overall crime per 1,000 residents and second and third worst for burglary and vehicle offences.

The overall crime rate is falling but Mr Wright said the South Yorkshire force ‘must do more and do it faster’ to improve performance across a number of areas, including crime reduction.

He said: "Despite the pressure on budgets of reduced government funding, I have maintained financial support to the force to avoid it having to reduce officers at the same rate other forces have had to.

"It's extremely disappointing and frustrating that other forces continue to perform better. I have done my best to provide the force with the financial resources it needs to achieve the objectives I have set.

"Real transformational change is required to shape the future operating model of the force and that change is not happening fast enough.

"The force needs to step up to the mark, do more and do it faster. I have made it clear to the Chief Constable that I want to see improvements and I want to see them fast."

Well, this is a different story as to ones told just a few weeks ago...isn't it?

They've made cuts, spent millions on a new holding cell and BRAGGED about reduced crime. Really? Do they know what's going on at all? Top 5 WORST and 2nd WORST for burglary. How anybody can be proud of this town in its current state is deluded. It needs a good wash and fundamental change to make it a proud place to live. Get the current council out and get a decent bunch in instead.

Another politician criticising people who do a difficult job, if the politicians were to make our society fairer, let police officers be police officers and employ enough social workers to be social workers, stop using the drugs problem to line the pockets of their lawyer and insurance company friends then we might get a police force who could concentrate on doing their job. What next another set of auditors who couldn't do the job their criticising; ofcop

Nice one Shaun I like the tough talk. Would have liked to have been a fly on the wall when you said that. look forward to seeing reduced crime in the next few days. Make barnsley a better place

Can someone please explain how Barnsley council, who have zero influence oo the funding or operation of the "South Yorkhire Police Force", can be criticised for their failings or praised for their successes. The buck stops at the doors of the Chief Constable and Police Commisioner and the government who decide how much they have to spend. Perhaps it's better to blame the rush to poorly funded "volunteers" and charities taking on work which was previously done by fully trained and remunerated police officers and support staff.

The people of South Yorkshire brand Shaun Wrights performance of Crime Commissioner as unacceptable.

Well said Civilian its the Comissioner himself that's th worst performer, he's done nothing for Barnsley since he was 'voted' in. Time his wage was used to employ more Police Officers on the beat.

Yup I agree, his "wage" would pay for another 5 beat bobbies, or another 7 "plastic" community support officers.

I know a copper based in Barnsley. Now I know this ain't representative of all police but if you ever see his FB comments (and those of his childish mates) we ain't talking Brain of Britain. Got an arse the size of Brazil too. I hear they are bringing fitness tests in for the police next year. About time too.

Actually Mr Wright, maybe you could monitor the FB posts of some of the PC's based in Barnsley? - What they post is disgraceful. One in particular lacks empathy (and so do his mates if the comments are anything to go by). They make skittish comments about folk living in Kendray and Athersley. They boast about their pensions. Thank the Lord they ain't in the Met. I can't imagine them pounding the beat in Harlesden and Stonebridge Park.

My point above is they spend too much time on their smartphones, updating their FB statuses rather than policing. One comes out with all sorts of drivel, telling the world he has just been in a house in Smithies that had dog faeces on the floor etc. This is usually on the night shift.

And what about the cost of the PCC's deputy (£45,000pa), his accountant, his office staff the cost of the elections and for what ??? How many people does he lock up ?? Come to think of it how many cops are actually on the street doing the job and how many are bean counting and in nice 9-5 jobs ??

@Vudu - I am very happy to name and shame love. Also, my user name relates to the }Voudou religion of the Deep South

I have the bottle to name and shame. Think overweight, think controlling, think the arse the size of Brazil, think girlfriend in a town known for its brass bands. Surely enough clues?

As usual many of you moaning about Police officers when lets be honest most of you dont have the relevant skills or education to become one. As for fitness tests they do exist and most Police are not unfit, except for the oldtimers in offices and they are slowly leaving and not being replaced.
The real issue is the PCC. The man should not be in charge of a bag of crisps ever mind the Police. He knows nothing about the Police and how they work or what they do. He is just a sad person making a fortune for doing nothing but undermine the Police. He is sacking police dogs next year but has saved the horses. Where is the sense in that? He needs sacking.

Purple haze. You do know alot. I agree about the dogs though, that seems daft. The dogs seem good for chasing the idiots and finding their stash. The horses seem to be just fro football crowd control. Do you know these things or are you assuming alot? How do you know who,s fit/unfit?
