Cold Causes Scores Of Deaths In Barnsley

SCORES of people have died in Barnsley because they couldn't keep warm over winter, shocking statistics have revealed.

NHS Barnsley say around 122 people have died - classed as 'excess winter deaths' - over a three year period.

Barnsley’s director of public health is now urging older people to keep warm over the winter.

Elizabeth Shassere said: “At this time of year changes in the weather often affect older people and those with long-term illnesses, such as asthma. While recent figures show that deaths nationally remain unchanged, we know that too many people from Barnsley and Yorkshire continue to die unnecessarily.

“Many deaths in winter are avoidable and friends and family can help by passing on information and looking out for older people. By taking simple steps, such as eating well and heating homes better, people can stay healthy over the colder weeks ahead. I would encourage anyone over 65 to have the flu jab now and claim any financial support they can receive.”

I wish someone would give me a £300 winter fuel allowance -- that would pay my gas bill for THE WHOLE YEAR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How old are you btw? Older people deserve to be looked after. If youre a young person of working age then pay for your own fuel. Dont begrudge old peoples need for extra heating in the cold months.

I for one dont begrudge the winter fuel allowance given to the elderly , with the exception of the ones living abroad still receiving it and the cold weather payment given to each member of the same household , I too pay my taxes work hard and still find it difficult to heat my home .

As above I said, I wish someone would give me a £300 winter fuel allowance -- that would pay my gas bill for THE WHOLE YEAR

i think its a nice thing that the elderly get a fuel allowance they have worked all their lifes (most of em) and todays pensions are crap. i think the government need to do something about the fuel companies putting costs up, i too work full time and find it hard to pay bills e.t.c. most people who work dont get
nothing, nolt, nada, zilch thats just life thats how it is. young people like myself wont die from lack of heat or get seriously ill easily like the elderly.
