Situation Getting Worse At Food Bank

THE co-ordinator of the town centre food bank has warned people are relying on it more than ever and revealed it's distributed more than 1,400 parcels to those in need.

Janet Crownshaw said she could only see the situation getting worse with the introduction of universal credit benefit.

"On average we're feeding about 50 people per week," Janet said.

"We're finding more and more are coming and while we are here to offer help, it's very alarming."

Items such as tinned meat and tomatoes, pasta and baby milk were donated by staff at the Unite Community Centre on Huddersfield Road, which offers one-to-one benefits and welfare support.

People who visit the centre in the NUM offices may have had their benefits stopped or seeking employment and support claims.

Joe Rollin, Unite community co-ordinator, said: "We're getting more people coming to see us and it's a real mix of everything.

"We work with people but it can take weeks to sort things out, so if they're really desperate we can advise a visit to the food bank for emergency relief."

Joe said an average of ten people visit the centre on a weekly basis, but more are seen through drop-in sessions, and it's hoped the opening days will be increased from two.

But he added: "Not everyone living in poverty is unemployed, which is more shocking.

"People are still struggling to make ends meet and might still come and see us even if they're employed."

Fantastic work by all who's involved volunteering. This must be very distressing situation to be in. No food and empty bellies in the 21st century is a disgrace.

Shame on all three main Political parties. His this the country that thousands of people have given there lives to have there country in this state today.

Totally agree Swifty - they won't be going to bed with empty bellies will they? Pigs in troughs springs to mind!!

This whole food bank thing is just unbelievable. Handbags that cost thousands, footballers and popstars being paid millions, yet people need to use food banks. People are hungry and this governments answer? Food banks. That's just how much they care about ordinary people. It worry's me,I'm just wondering how low society will be forced and allowed to fall. The people in power care not one iota. They are pigs in a trough, they are dispicable. I just wonder why some folk idolise some of these greedy creatures. Have we been brainwashed?

I think Geldof and his mates sould start raising money for this country,i think Africa etc are better of then ourselves,,,

Reply Posted by sid on Friday October 18 2013 at 23:27
Bit over the top geldof. I must say though, that does appall me when celebs are begging us to tip up our hard earned, whilst they are swinging their three grand handbags over their shoulders to go to the after party's swigging champers. They wouldn't know charity if it hit them over their botoxed heads.

Reply Posted by geldof on Friday October 18 2013 at 23:33
sid...only saying the world is always asking us to give to charity,i think is about time we look after are own,you will laugh when Africa start doing a feed the world to help us,because its going down the pan fast this country,..

Reply Posted by sid on Friday October 18 2013 at 23:38
God,hope that it doesn't get that bad geldof, but I do agree, its dire at the moment. And I agree,it is time we looked after our own. Nobody listens though. I worry how low the politician's will let the country go.

Have a read up what this country is paying in aid to african countries like Nigeria and Congo. The figures will blow your mind

Reply Posted by j on Saturday October 19 2013 at 09:47
Where is the logic in it Lyndon? Our own go hungry while our shit government send billions in overseas aid to countries that have more money than we do and the bigger picture is that the ones who need it never see a penny of it - it's syphoned off by the ones at the top of the tree. And yes, Sid - totally agree with your comments - materialism!! It is totally obscene the amounts spent on the likes of bloody footballers, so called 'stars' etc. They spend more on hair do's than some folk have to live on for a month!! I don't know how they sleep at night knowing many are suffering ... hey, but then - 3 grand 'designer' handbag - bet you haven't got one ner ner - says it all doesn't it?

Reply Posted by sid on Saturday October 19 2013 at 10:07
I'm with you j. We all love the finer things in life, but surely the basic needs of the population should come first. Then they wonder why we have no faith in politics. They're not doing their job properly, that's why. I love my trips out,but if the money pots low,I simply don't go.

You really couldn't make it up could you?

Food banks in this day and age and the Red Cross planning to distribute food aid to the needy in the first time since the second world war.

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to TORY BRITAIN!

Thing is we are an extremely wealthy country, but the people at the top do not want to relinquish their vast wealth.
If society is to survive this latest Tory onslaught, then the uber rich are eventually going to have to surrender some of their wealth.

What we need is a modern day Robin Hood and fast!

Stevo/Steveo

Im a little confused by you. You absolutely slate Tory's. Tory Britain this and that, but are this government not puting right the wrongs of labour spending spree that got us into this mess in the first place . You also slate the labour council !
Could you please tell us all what to do to get us out of this mess rather than blame all and sundry !! (The real Fred)

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Sunday October 20 2013 at 16:57
I would tax the rich into oblivion and spread the wealth.
Nuff said?

Reply Posted by sid on Saturday October 19 2013 at 14:24
We do steveo. Wat I can't get my head around,is that(unless I missed it) none of theother pparty's are screaming an shouting about it! Also, where is the church? Why are they not shouting up for the population?. Where are the popstars? If any of us on here had any kind of power,I reckon we would use it to open up this disgusting situation. For some reason , no one is crying out about it. Where is the opposition? Its a big worry to think just how low they are going to let people go. They have made drugs and alcohol readily available, and it makes me wonder if its going to get back to the days when people were drinking gin all day. You may laugh, but for gods sakeFOOD BANKS IN BRITAIN. Its disgusting, I just wish someone would get all three party leaders and ask them their intentions and how they can allow our once proud country to get into this state. They should be on trial for allowing this country to rot.

It's very hard to bring a country back up once its gone to the dogs and I'm afraid if we go down any further we are in real trouble. It will takes years to bring us back up to anything like.
Someone influential needs to see the red flag signs, I'm afraid as a country we're not waving we're drowning!

The young generation of the royal family should start showing some balls and standing up for their subjects. The population is being let down badly. It takes a lot to rattle my cage, but hells bells its rattling now. I just can't imagine being so low that I would have to queue at a food bank to feed my family. Its pityfull, and it seems we are accepting it.

Reply Posted by Rubydoo on Saturday October 19 2013 at 14:39
Yes Sid perhaps we should all write to the young Royals, worth a try.

Reply Posted by sid on Saturday October 19 2013 at 14:52
Hey rubydoo, sounds daft dosnt it. But you would do that if you had any power and and more money than you need. I would be embarrassed at having wealth and some poor sods begging for food. It makes me sick. I'm not sure about robin hood as steveo said, its more like a problem for superman.

Reply Posted by *** on Saturday October 19 2013 at 15:12
The young generation of royals don't give a shite about us Sid, just like the older ones never did. They make the right noises, but how the hell would they know eh? The only one of them that did have any compassion was killed in an 'accident' and it wasn't the gin n dubonnet supping free loader queen mother either. All the lot of em at the 'top' don't give a monkeys about anyone. It's every man for himself these days I'm afraid - dog eat dog!!

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Saturday October 19 2013 at 16:55
That's the whole problem isn't it?
The rich and privileged couldn't give a monkeys about people having to queue at foobanks.
The Tories take great pride in keeping the poor in poverty as it keeps them subservient, it also stops them from descending on parliament with their pitchforks!

Your words ****are proving to be right. When the history books are read in the future, all this will just seem so unbelievable. There are many that should hang their heads in shame.

cameron will never change is mind. when ever the subject gets brought up, he changes the story to something else. telling us all how we are all wrong and the tories are right.
i work voluntary as a session leader at a project for the homeless and people in poverty. we have seen a increase in clients/visitors since june this year. many familys with children coming in, even people working but still on a minus income.

our project relies on donations from churches, a major food supplier who donates food which are near it end of shelf life. and people that understand what the state the country is in and donate extra food when they go shopping. we have people coming in that have had their benefits stopped.............because they couldnt afford the bus fair to sign on!!!!!!!
i contacted BMBC and asked them if there is anything they could do to reduce the bedroom tax, and their reply was the government has cut their expenditure by millions and they are also struggling to keep people in jobs and carry out some services due to cuts.
i wonder if the tories in london would agree to work for the NMW until the next election? i wounder if they could survive?
how come they dont pay b,tax on their second homes when they would have more then 3 rooms spare at a time? oh sorry, they do, out of their expenses theyve swindled.

i was ask by a labour candidate why i never vote?
i dont vote due to the lies, thieving bastards, set of scumbags.
if they spent the money on solving this problem, instead of kicking billions abroad for countries effected by wars that are none of our business. put every MP in prison who as so much as swindled a free bus ride, we would be in a better state of affairs.

rant over.

Lee c, you keep ranting, its good. The Tory's won't get in again. The bedroom tax and food banks are thier downfall, to name but a few. They are using our taxes on all the wrong things.

Reply Posted by lee c on Saturday October 19 2013 at 23:08
@fred, if what you say is true that labour spent all money, can you explain were the sense is to continue week after week to send millions of pounds abroad? Why spend 80 odd billion on a train what nobody wants?

Steveo, what do call rich? How would you base your taxation policy ? Surely any such policy would cause a mass exodus of talented business leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs, and make for an even worse financial climate.
Before you start your rant at me I'm all for people paying there taxes, but don't over tax success. More important that we ensure business doing business in the UK are not aloud to walk scot free from there tax obligations ie Vodafone, Amazon , Google etc. A massive reduction in oversea aid, and put a stop to utility companies ripping us off. That's what I suggest!

Problem is Fred, those at the top who on their vastly inflated salaries have had it far too good for far too long.

Those earning over £1million a year - 60% tax rate!

Look at Houghton, a £150k salary and has the cheek to claim £30k expenses last year putting his salary above the Prime Ministers who is tasked to run the country.
Fire / Police / NHS / local council leaders /civil servants NOT allowed to earn more than £150k a year.

MP'S - Flat rate of pay for MP's and no more expenses for them to fiddle, they would have to pay everything out of the flat rate.
MP's pay awards 2% LESS than inflation.
Interestingly, they are still debating an 11% pay rise for MP's.
That is totally unjustified in these austere times.

Bankers playing Russian roulette with the nations finances but yet allowed to earn £2million bonuses, Bonuses of which George (Gideon) Osbourne is taking the EU to court over because he doesn't think it is right that bankers bonuses are capped to three times their salary as per EU law.

Vast corporations Amazon, Google, Starbucks not paying their fair share of taxes, and making MASSIVE profits on the backs of the people they "employ" via zero hours contracts and via agencies.

Overseas aid needs stopping to the richer countries that do not need it, India , brazil no name but a few.

Utility companies, Prices capped and when prices drop savings passed on immediately to the consumer.
We simply cannot just let the utility companies to constantly up their prices when their is absolutely no need to, the general public have had to endure massive price rises but alas their shareholders still get bumper dividend payments.
Slash the divi for one year and pass those savings onto the customer.
A tougher regulator is needed to keep these utility companies in check.
If these companies continue to fail us, the consumer, then these companies need to be taken over by the state.

HS2 - Biggest white elephant in our countries history, will bring absolutely nothing to the north apart from faster train times at vastly inflated prices.
Causing untold misery to the households that are going to be directly affected by train lines going through their back gardens.

East Coast Mainline to be KEPT in public hands as it is making a very good profit for the taxpayer, but alas the TORIES want to put it out to tender!

I could go on and on but that is my view.

Alas Steveo.

It appears that we actually agree! (Mostly! LOL)

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Wednesday October 23 2013 at 16:28
Its called common sense Fred, unfortunately the majority of the people who post on this board seem not to have one ounce of common sense.
The other problem is masses of information is "supressed" by the Tories and their various propaganda arms such as the Sun, Daily Mail and even the BBC who were slapped with a "no filming" order at the recent protests that took place earlier in the year in Manchester.
The Tories cited "security issues" and got an injunction out against the beeb to stop them from filming.

To the Tories - you can try and supress as much information as you want but in this "anonymous" age you are not that "anonymous" and the truth will come out eventually.

tthe solution to this countrys problem is simple.throw out the tory goverment and deport all the muslims and close our borders to any muslims that try to get in.pay people to knock all the mosques down and build more supermarkets and childrens centres.its the muslims thats destroying britain today, them and the tories.
