Barnsley Road Named One Of UK's Worst For Its Potholes

Tuesday October 15 2013

BARNSLEY's road surfaces have long been a touchy subject - and now a road in the town has been named one of the worst in the UK for its potholes.

The B6273 South Moor Road/Moor Lane, which runs from Great Houghton through Brierley Common and on to Hemsworth, was highlighted after data gathered from councils showed there was now one pothole for every mile of road across the country.

A Freedom of Information request by breakdown company Britannia Rescue revealed councils across the country have paid out a total of £2.5million in compensation to motorists in the past financial year for pothole damage to cars.

Cllr Roy Miller, environment spokesman for Barnsley Council, said South Moor Road/Moor Lane was inspected every month and any problems were immediately reported and repaired as soon as possible - most within 24 hours.

He added: "But over the years we're aware of potholes appearing suddenly, especially in winter, and these have been known to lead to a cluster of claims within a short space of time - often within minutes of each other - before we have had chance to undertake repairs.

"The road itself is highly-exposed to the elements, which can accelerate problems such as potholes, but these are unavoidable, not a result of lack of maintenance."

Your right, its not due to lack of maintenance....its due to lack of brains!

Sarah your comment did make me laugh, but in all seriousness how much in repair bill's are people paying out per year. i just had some suspension work done myself recently and its not cheap. Pot holes are bad now, give it a month or two when the ice and cold weather is upon us and things will only get worse.

And Cllr Roy Miller, you are so full of sh!t its unreal.

ive had to have some work done on my car due to the roads around the goldthorpe, bolton area the roads down in bolton are shocking. It made me chuckle how he makes out its just this road that is damaged by the weather and others arent, he really is full of something and now it seems its pouring out of his mouth as well.

So cllr Roy Miller (LABOUR) is trying to blame the weather and elements for his own shortcomings, like the rest of the UK doesn't also get these conditions. Basically, he's claiming his expenses but too lazy to get off his back side to sort the problems he is getting paid for. Clearly he thinks we are all idiots....should we ask how much he is getting paid out of the enormous budget the LABOUR council sets for him? LABOUR OUT!

You don't have to go that far. Try Eastgate in town. It is disgusting for a town center thoroughfare. Surely there would have been a bit left over from the Town Hall project to sort that out

maybe if the NHS didn't take all the road tax then maybe a few quid would be spent actually on the roads. .. SHITE government is where the blame lies.

Steve what makes you bring the NHS into this and basing that on calling them a SHITE government?

Perhaps if you researched, you would find that LABOUR invested in a company to provide NHS with a computer system, which failed. They invested MORE money to the tune of £10bn to the SAME COMPANY and the computer system is STILL not working properly!

If you want to blame anybody for mismanagement of funds and wasting YOUR MONEY, then look a bit closer to the party that is also running your council. The same guys with over inflated salaries and expenses and employing their spouses to line their pockets.

cant believe a councillor is blaming the weather. of course its the weather. along with grit salt. it all contributes. im not a well educated bloke. but I could have told you all that. as for the nhs...privatise it. its been a tug of war for the opposing governments for too long. sell it off. now. no time is a good time. but its going to happen. it might as well be now.

Road tax, Petrol tax, Vehicle purchase tax, VAT tax on top of every type of vehicle tax add the pointless Fines (tax). We should have roads as good as in Spain if only 10% were used on the road maintenance

We had a blow out earlier this year on that road due to a pot hole. 10 minutes after we did another car stopped behind us as they hit the pot hole too and blew their tyre. Barnsley council refused to accept liability and reimburse repair costs as they claimed they were aware of it and were in the process of fixing it. Yet no warning was put up at night which is when we had the blow out.

If you want an example of how our roads are maintained and repaired have run down the section of Wakefield Road that they have just spent weeks resurfacing. The finished of the surface is disgusting, its already rippled in places. The quality of workmanship could be likened to a couple of gypsy's with a barrow and tamper.

I think the first hard frost will give us an indication of the quality.
