Consuming Alcohol In Front Of Kids - Right Or Wrong?

Friday October 18 2013

Is it fair to consume alcohol in front of kids? Is it fair to consume alcohol in front of kids?

THERE has been lots of debate in the national press recently about consuming alcohol in front of your children. Where do you stand on the matter? Is it setting them a bad example? Have your say on our WAB Debate.

In 2012, there were 293 cases of children aged 11 or under attending A&E with alcohol-related conditions, while 6,500 under-18s were admitted.

Do you think it's acceptable to drink in front of your kids, or is it setting a bad example? Have your say below.

How is it setting a bad example to drink in front of your kids? Utter rubbish. I have travelled extensively in France and it is the norm for parents to drink wine with their dinner. To be honest, I thought it was in the UK until I saw an old friend in Barnsley drinking TEA with their dinner. It could have been worse, it could have been coca cola. Seriously though, parents should drink responsibly in front of their kids.

I think you may have the wrong question here WAB, I know you want to promote discussion and debate, and fair play to you. But maybe rethink this?

Drinking a bottle or a pint - fine
getting drunk - bad

(Also need to give them less fizzy pop - but that is a different debate)

No one minds a drink. Nobody likes a drunk.

Why should WAB re-think it? I think It's a good topic for debate. Should bring in many diverse and interesting views. I think drinking in moderation is the way to go. Setting a good example to your children and teaching them about the consequences of drinking are lessons that will set young ones up for life.

@bird - wasn't clear, I think its a reasonable debate to have. My comment on re-think was the title rather than subject matter

its not the drinking in front of children that is wrong...............its the children hearing/witnessing the arguments/violence thats the problem. if it gets to a stage were its continually happening, then the adults should be grown up enough to understand the effect it has on the children, and either stop drinking in front of them or one adult leaves and seeks help before its too late.

Wrong, but enough people do it that it is socially acceptable - therefore right
