Car Commuters Offered Free Bus Pass

Thursday October 10 2013

BARNSLEY'S commuters are being urged to leave their car at home and instead travel by bus for a day after a new free ticket initiative was launched.

The 'Give the Bus a Go' initiative has been launched by Travel South Yorkshire, together with Inmotion! and Stagecoach Yorkshire, to encourage more people to try Barnsley’s buses and benefit the environment.

Street teams will be in Barnsley this month handing out vouchers that can be exchanged for a free Stagecoach dayrider ticket, giving car users the chance to try travelling by bus to work, college, shopping or football.

Street team locations

Metrodome Leisure Complex on October 11, 1-5pm
Oakwell Stadium on October 19, 1-6pm
Alhambra Shopping Centre on October 26, 2-6pm

The Inmotion! project is delivered through South Yorkshire’s £24.6million Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) - a partnership between South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield Councils that aims to make the journey to work simpler, easier or even healthier.

David Young, SYPTE's deputy interim director general, said: "Barnsley’s public transport network offers a convenient, stress free and more environmentally friendly way to get to work.

"It's a good idea for when town is busy, parking is limited or when there’s an event or football match taking place.

"We’re delighted to be able to offer car users a free travel for the day by Stagecoach bus in Barnsley as part of our Give the Bus a Go campaign."

The last time I 'tried' to use public transport, 4 buses didn't turn 1 did with 'out of service' on it, by this point I couldn't get to the train in time so I ended up going in my car!

I am not in any way a snob. The last time I got on a bus it actually stank disgusting. Sorry, but alot of people dont wash these days. It was horrible the scruffy pigs. Some folk were obviously fine but by god, theose that wernt, just turned my guts. I couldn,t wait to get off the flaming thing and caught a taxi home.

I came to Barnsley last month and used the buses several times. They were absolutely fine. I never saw any of the people you describe either.

Im glad for you lepont...yak..it was horrible. It was raining and it smelt like chuffing wet dog. Sick to the stomach.

Ah Buses....

Never turn up on time, don't start early enough, far too expensive to get me to my place of work - two buses - £6 -£8 a day , nice warm car for an 18 mile round trip, petrol less than a few quid.

No brainer really.

It must be Nice to have a choice as to whether to jump in your car or to use the bus some of us don't have that luxury, I have a choice I either stay at home or use the bus service to enable me to get out and about and I have never come across anyone who doesn't wash, you get people from different backgrounds and I've had pleasant conversations with people I wouldn't have met if I didn't use public transport.

If you complain that people today are dirty, smell, swear, spit, vomit, shout, talk about sex etc etc then you are classed as a snob. Personally I think that if we all told those people it was not acceptable then society would improve. However then we would have the anti (positive) snob brigade who would stick up for the scrubbers instead of castigating them.

No darling it is not my children they are sleeping with as they are 11 and 12 years old and last time I got on a bus was around a year ago when my car was in the garage and yes there were people on who stank of god knows what teens swearing and spitting and yes talking about what they do and don't do on the park bench I am not a snob I am a normal person who doesn't like that sort of talk from anyone and I certainly wouldn't let my kids near that bus station my friends daughter got beat up in front of so called nice people who didn't help her at all

I generally walk to work and back, and rareley use busse,s,...not because of the preceding comment,s but because if if I catch a bus home from work,..it take,s an xtra 40 minute,s of waiting and travelling time,..and for an extra 0.80 pence,...I can be home in 15 minute,s with door to door service,..in a Taxi,...if i,m walking i I can be home in 30 mins,...the equation say,s it all,..!!!

What a set of wankers you are you critisise everything in your boring daily lives and then you come on here and moan some more and stevo you talk out of your arse just for the sake of it .
You dont even know how much the fxxxing bus fares are.
For a start you cantravel all day over south yorkshire into west yorkshire and down to nottinghamshire for 5:50 from morning till night. No insurance no oil.
Notax .no aa cover. just 5:50.
And as far as druggys and smells are concerned ive travelled thousands of miles on buses over the last 6 years and never seen a druggy. They are all driving
and the smell must be from shit you talk
cos ive never smelled a bad bus yet.
I stopped driving because of all the ignorant bastards who whont let you out of a side road.
the stress of other drivers and the 90 year olds who drive like they did when they had ford model Ts also the under seat heatng in winter made me feel like id pissed myself.
Now i sit back and let someone else drive and pay my insurance and tax and tyres and AA.and as far asbus times i never have to wait for a bus or miss one because you can track the bus on your phone its that simple........a bit like car drivers..

Mae / Les read my post again and reply back when you have fully understood the subject matter.

Did I not say that busses do not run early enough to get me to my place of work?
FYI it would be two busses taking almost an hour, one into town then one on to work.

If it is right what you say then £5.50 x 5 = £27.50 - Still at least a tenner + more than what it costs me in petrol.

Travelling time by bus - 10 hours a week
Travelling time by car - 2.5 hours a week

Good luck on your regular bus journeys, I will think about you when i'm in my nice warm car and you are freezing your nads off waiting at the bus stop.

You talk some right shite my pedigree chum, tell you what i'll quite happily send you £5.50 so you can naff off to Nottingham you idiotic fool.

God Mae, you're after an argument with every post you make recently. I said that not everyone washes, meaning not everyone stinks. Of course not everyone on the bus was stinky, but those that did, made the whole bus stink of wet dog. It was minging. Its not my fault, its just the way it was. Try and cheer up Mae,some of your posts are vile.

And my barrister friends doesn't smell either. Nor is he a druggy. Some WABER's talk such shite.

I live on a bus route to work, unfortunately the first bus gets me to work for 9.15, i start work at 8.30 so useless!

Reply Posted by clare taylor on Friday October 11 2013 at 08:39
good idea.dont use the bus a lot but when i do its ok,there arnt enough buses back from sheffield late at night though and there is also a lot of confusion over passes, the other day the driver told me to buy an explorer tkt for doncaster.when i got their i cpouldnt use it as their buses are run by first and not stagecoach

I use the bus almost every day and i also get driven around by my other half on a regular basis. Yes, its nice to sit in the warm car with the music on but when you have to pay at least £5 for day parking at every secure car park available, it adds up. My other half spends £30 a week on parking. I spend £9 a week on bus travel and i go 3 times the distance he drives to work. My other half has been late for work more times, due to not being able to find parking (even when he sets off early anticipating this) than i have due to a bus not arriving. I agree that, every now and then, a bus can be late or smelly or contain a weirdo or scruffy chav kid, but its not that often that i come across one. There are also smart business men and women and university students and professionals on the bus too, like me.

Stevo i said you dont know how much the fares are i dont need to read back .
For a week pass it is 12.00. For as many journeys you want to take in that week .
The 5.50 for one dayis to take you anywhere down to notts to west yorks
all over s yorks and if you can do the whole course for anywhere near that in a car ill slap our lasses ass.
And if you can travel anywhere in s yorkshire for a week for less than 12 ill slap her ass again.
The wholle idea of getting people onto busses is a bus can carry 72 passengers
how many cars would you take off the road if people caught the bus . 14 or 72 for all the one person drivers. look how much longer oil would last in the ground for your grandkids to enjoy.
You may laugh now but the gas is going out already

Still more expensive for me to travel by unreliable busses.
And as I have a hybrid car, It is more eco friendly than any bus could ever be.

Reply Posted by me brussel sprout on Sunday October 13 2013 at 13:13
@mae brussel..what a lot of shite you talk,it is about catching a bus to work, not travelling the whole universe,to see if it would be cheaper.the facts are,1, 99% of people start work before the buses even start operating in most areas,2,never turn up on time, please explain why people will give there cars up?

Reply Posted by dean on Sunday October 13 2013 at 13:51
this is my own opinion as a reflection of my own circumstances , I find sometimes a car can cost more than making bus journeys , however when you take into account what time you start/finish work and where you live/work sometimes its less hassle just to jump in your car to make your journeys , don't get me wrong I do use buses a few times a week for going into town ( drink driving aint a good idea ) I do sometimes come across people who went born with a brain only last week a group of youths jumped out of the emergency exit of a bus in athersley south into the path of an oncoming car and just ran off leaving the driver to get out of his cab to close the door after them drivers and the travelling public should have to put up with this , at the end of the day its down to choice and circumstances if people want to leave their cars on the drive and use public transport .

Reply Posted by mae brussel on Friday October 18 2013 at 10:01
Eco friendly my ass.
Maybe to you after youve covered the cost of the car and by that time you havnt.
You buy a car and you dont even own the batterys. a bit like solar panels .
You get in the car and drive away you dont think of the health of the planet in the creation of this technology.
Look at fracking. look at genetic m foods
everyone comes up with ideas that save the world and every time they think it up it just gets worse..
For the wanker who thinks i talk shite you need to think first. Kettle calling frying pan and all that

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Monday October 21 2013 at 15:46
Who says I have actually bought the car? Maybe its a company car or a car bought on a lease plan?

Irrespective of which it is STILL cheaper and more eco friendly that a diesel chugging bus.
