New Fast Food Restaurant - Do You Think It's Needed? A WAB Debate

Monday September 23 2013

Would a fast food outlet increase footfall? Would a fast food outlet increase footfall?

A FAST food restaurant is said to be needed to improve footfall in the town centre. What do you think? Have your say on our WAB Debate.

Owen Gleadall, the president of the Barnsley Chamber of Commerce, said the number of people visiting the town centre had fallen noticeably since McDonald's closed their restaurant in Peel Square several years ago.

"McDonald's definitely brought people into the town centre and we could do with another fast food restaurant which is attractive to people.

"There is a KFC at Town End, but it's not in the town centre."

He said members of the town centre forum The Voice had noticed a difference in footfall since McDonald's had closed.

He added: "When you remove footfall there is a knock-on effect. We need some central point to create footfall and McDonald's certainly did that."

He admitted there had been a problem with litter associated with the restaurant, but said McDonald's had a team of litter pickers who would help to keep the area tidy.

Owen said there was no link between Experience Barnsley - which last week had its 40,000 visitor through the door - and the town centre because people were parking at Churchfields and walking to the museum, but not going on and into the town centre.

He added: "With McDonald's, people would go for lunch and then go into the town centre and spend money in the shops they walked past."

What do you reckon? Do you think it's needed? Have your say below.

Of course, that's when it all went wrong, when they removed McDonalds from the centre of town. Idiots!! Stick it back and that will solve all the problems.

I agree!! I could never understand why they removed the McDonald's in the first place!!

Anything that improves football in the town can only be a good thing cos we need the points. I'm not sure how fast food does that, but I say go for it. :-)

It was nice when there was a maccy with a play center in town, we used to meet up there, or take the kids there for half an hour if they got fed up of shopping. Obviously we don't want to stuff our kids full of junk food, but there really isn't anywhere child friendly in town anymore.

I used to work at Mcds in town part-time as a student, the reason it shut down - it was running at a loss! Doesn't take a genius to work out why a multinational would pull out of a town centre, yes it made money saturday, sunday but rest of week it was dead or ticking over at best, a big building with big rents and high overheads.

does anyone remember why that place was moved from where it was in the first place?..or rumoured to have?. don't you all think we have enough fast food places in town and in the surround ding areas?..if anything we should be campaigning to close them. councils allow them to open. and our government are telling us were all obese? I would bet there are thousands in the Barnsley area. close them.

Bang goes the millions spent by the local nhs on public health.

@me. That's very true. Who pays these plonkers?
Oh, us. Mental

Reply Posted by John on Monday September 23 2013 at 13:32
If you're talking about the Chamber of Commerce I guess their customers pay them.

Reply Posted by sid on Monday September 23 2013 at 13:38
No John, I'm on about NHS and the other government bodies that are trying to educate all those that stuff their faces with crap.

There isn't any footfall because there isn't any decent shops. Car parking difficult, cafe's, a Market no-one uses, Pound shops and Charity Shops all over town, what does the Council Expect? Most people go to Meadowhall or even into Sheffield. Better shops, better atmosphere. Street Cafes would be fine if they were allowed more tables and chairs out in the precinct. However, we do have Costa Lotta for your Coffee.

The town centre needs a damn good fettle it's grubby full of litter and not very welcoming Shops are sparse and offer not so cheap rubbish Costa may seem expensive but it's always full and it's nice and clean Just because it's Barnsley doesn't mean it all has to be second best

Reply Posted by maxine on Monday September 23 2013 at 11:42
come back McDonald's all if forgive LOL Is the council serious??? Thats exactly what we don't need! How about a Nandos, wagamama or a sushi bar for exmples? Why does it have to be a crappy burger bar? And the shops? Don't get me started on the shops! :/

Reply Posted by John on Monday September 23 2013 at 13:31
Where in this article does it say anything about the council making this suggestion? It refers to the Chamber of Commerce and the Town Centre Forum.

Reply Posted by Neil on Friday September 27 2013 at 21:19
Wagamama definitely, You've got to travel to Sheffield for half decent Japanese food

They should put a roof over the entire town centre and then they can ban smoking there. You can't get in or out of a shop without getting a lung full of death mist !!!
And free parking in the Alhambra and the market multi storey car parks would help.
It's cheaper to drive and pay the petrol bill to meadowhell than park in town.
And if there 20 "E-cig" stands in the town centre that's an under stated guess !!

Reply Posted by Robbo on Wednesday September 25 2013 at 10:56
It's good to see that some people would like to take the freedom of choice from others, just because what they do isn't the same as what you do. I, for one, would close all the pubs because I don't drink. However, it isn't my choice. There is free parking at weekends (Sunday only in the Alhambra) and as for the E Cig stalls, well why complain if you want everyone to stop smoking? Grow up

They must have pretty low expectations for the town when they say adding a McDonalds would be an improvement.

Less fast food outlets and improve image of town.
Backwards move will just lead us to continuing the 'turkey-circle' folk image of the town centre which is the real reason people avoid going in. This will just make that worse. In modern times surely people are moving away from the fast-food ideal? Make Barnsley town centre a nice place to be - or feed the greasy threatening view. It will just encourage the -"have you got 20pence mate" folk. Onwards and upwards not plummet back down.

Need a Burger King not another McDees!
Mcdonalds is only a 5 min walk down road and KFC is only a 2 min walk away from town center.. Get a Burger King best of all worlds then the fatties can get everything and hopefully more jobs available..

Reply Posted by sid on Monday September 23 2013 at 14:07
No Laura, mcdees and KFC will go bust. The fattys just will walk to the nearest. Less jobs.

simple...... bring bk mc donalds, its def missed in town centre

Reply Posted by Kirsty on Tuesday September 24 2013 at 00:45
Yes, defo a large fast food chain - I don't really care which one, something cheap will get people going to it. Even if its something like an all day buffet...

The problem with all town centres all throughout the country, not just Barnsley, is the massive rent and taxes that have to be paid on buildings together with low footfall. Why would somewhere like McD's want to open up again in a shop where the foot fall is low without receiving some sort of incentive.
They are being hailed as some sort of messiah to save the town centre, yet, they are having to bring the trade with them as it is too low here at the moment. The other shops are struggling to bring people in so why should they have to do it all.....
Incentives in deprived areas are required from local councils and central government but whilst we are in the current mess you will struggle to get a brass farthing from anyone.
It isn't all about the town centre though, what about the outlieing villages eg. Staincross, Royston, Monk Bretton, Grimethorpe etc.
All I will say is that if you want your local villages/town to succeed you have to use them and spend in them. Incentives should go to small local businesses and entrepreneurs not multi-national chains. Spend more of your money in the local community and keep local jobs going generating more income and revenue for our area.
SHOP LOCAL AND SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESSES not National chain stores.
USE THEM - DON'T LOSE THEM!!

Well said, I fully agree

Reply Posted by Joanne on Wednesday September 25 2013 at 10:35
The centre needs a family restaurant. Something you can call in and have a meal with family and possibly a drink. The central pubs are not child friendly and the child friendly ones are far out of town so you can't have a glass of wine as you have to drive.

Something like a Wetherspoons but with a play area instead of doleys drinking pints of wife-beater at 10am.

The Chestnut Tree etc are always busy because they cater for families not drunks.

We don't need anymore fast food resteraunts in town.there are already plenty of places to eat.load of pubs sell food and plenty of coffee shops.cafes and too many chip shops.what we need is more shops.if they charged decent rents for building to encourage buisnessthen maybe we would have more shops

Macdonalds moved out same as Littlewoods, BHS, because of lack of footfall, Barnsley is in decline because people have less disposable income than they had 20yrs ago when coal mines, Gents, and all the other factories closed. What Barnsley needs is thousands of well payed jobs to replace all those it lost to put some cash in peoples pockets.

Easy to see why there isn' t any footfal. Just 2 words really .Barnsley: Dump. There's nothing in the town to attract people, that is of course unless you are a beer swilling bingo or slot machine player. There aren't any decent shops in town and the market is nothing like it once was. So why would another fast food outlet solve the problem? That's the last thing people want in this economic climate.

Reply Posted by shaz on Friday September 27 2013 at 16:42
If barnsley had decent shops we would have more footfall. Its pretty obvious to any one if you have somewhere decent to shop more people will come hence more footfall. Its not exactly rocket science but then i dont get paid a good wage to think of stupid ideas

shaz, I popped in to town on wednesday and the food market was on . It really was nice. It was packed too. Im not one for markets,I think theyre done for, but that was really good. I didnt know it was on so it was great and yes I for one spent more time and money in town, and I migt add,not very much of it went to the food stalls. Great atmosphere, it made me stay longer as I had intended to just really pop in the bank. Spent up !!

yeah nice 1 bring in a fast food 'restaurant' and get the ever growing public of barnsley bigger....this town is slowly becoming a laughing stock....it was once upon a time one of the best nights out in the uk....those times have well and truely gone....the town centre is full of fat dole wallers, druggies, alcos....who really likes to spend their time mingling inbetween dirty gets like that??

Reply Posted by Swifty on Friday September 27 2013 at 21:29
It will take more than a fast food outlet to save Barnsley Town Centre. I for one don't go in any more sick to death of the scrounging foreign Bar stewards trying to tap you for money or selling 9 carrots of plastic rings. The streets are filthy and the fatest thing to move is the parking attendants in there jobs worth suits checking tickets on windscreens.

I have never seen as many empty shops and TO-LET boards the Town as finished however the Town Hall looks good for the selected few.

Having said that can you actually travel into Barnsley with the BMBC road closures they have SELF inflicted on our Business communities.

If barnsley had some decent shops instead of good ones shutting down every 5 mins, people may stay in town instead of heading to medowhall. I'm a parent of 2 & there's nowhere decent to buy anything for my kids......mothercare & elc shut down......would love a disney shop in barnsley lol
