Boy Sentenced Today For Battering Mother To Death

Thursday December 15 2011

A BARNSLEY teenager was given an indeterminate sentence for public protection when he appeared before the courts today after admitting bludgeoning his mother to death.

James Gethen, 16, appeared at Leeds Crown Court after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Detective Superintendent James Abdy, the senior investigating officer in the case, said: "This was a tragic event and our thoughts are with the family. They have not only had to endure the loss of a loved one, but also come to terms with the fact that Ann's life was cut short at the hands of her own son, James.

"We offer our deepest condolences to Ann's family, with whom we have worked with throughout and will continue to offer specialist family liaison and support wherever we can."

Police were called to Beever Street in Goldthorpe, Barnsley last August (2010) where they discovered the body of 39-year-old Ann Marie Gethen. A post mortem revealed she had been bludgeoned to death.
