Reward Offered To Trace Dog's Killers

Tuesday September 17 2013

Bruiser Bruiser

THIS little dog met a barbaric death having had weights clamped to its paws before being thrown in a canal.

Bruiser, a three-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, was described by his previous owners as a very gentle-natured dog.

He had been friendly with other dogs and children but had to be re-homed last summer simply because his former owners had separated and could no longer look after him.

He had been identity-chipped but his latest owners had not bothered to update the records. Council workmen recovered his body from the canal at Royston last Wednesday morning after reports from passers-by that something was floating on the surface.

Angler and dog owner Claire Mayes said she was shocked to see the weights attached to the dog when the council came and removed it from the water.

Claire, 34, added: "What evil b*****d puts weights on a dog and drowns it?"

RSPCA spokesman Lynsey Harris described the killing as ‘horrendous’ and ‘barbaric’ and appealed for help in tracking down whoever was responsible.

She added: "There’s no excuse for doing this. We know it’s difficult times and people are struggling financially and it means some people can’t afford dogs but there are so many dog charities out there.

"We deal with a lot of awful things on a daily basis but when it's a premeditated attack, when somebody has prepared these weights in that way, it’s barbaric.

"The original owner of the dog was heartbroken to find out what had happened to him.

"I have no idea why someone would want to do this to a defenceless animal and it's very disturbing and quite an horrendous way for an animal to die."

Jean Kilkenny, of Royston Animal Welfare, described Bruiser's death as ‘murder’.

She added: “I think it's absolutely dreadful what has happened. The dog must have gone through absolute agony before it drowned."

The Barnsley Chronicle has offered a £500 cash reward to help bring those responsible to justice.

"How anyone could treat a dog this way is beyond belief," said the Chronicle's editor, Andrew Harrod.

"It must have been a horrible way to die. It's not known whether this was carried out by the owners who had got fed up of Bruiser or whether he had got lost or been stolen and it was some sort of sick prank.

"Either way, Bruiser didn’t deserve this horrible fate. Surely there was no need for the owners to resort to this? For the last year, Bruiser had obviously been someone’s pet - someone must recognise him from the picture.

"If you think you know who was to blame for his death then please contact the RSPCA."

this is again a reason why dog licenses should be brought back. anyone who loves and cares for their dog wouldn't mind being licensed and it would stop a lot of these people who just want a dog to fight or show off to their mates. they shouldn't be allowed to keep animals or children. they are not worthy of them. what did the poor dog do to deserve this treatment. all i can say is god doesn't pay back in money pal. you will get yours one day.

Reply Posted by rose jay on Tuesday September 17 2013 at 18:53
What planet are you on dog license would not stop anything. If yobs steal a dog and its microchipped they cut in out with a stanley knife. The only people asking for licenses are the RSPCA so they can pocket the estimated 30 million revenue.
Well the three factors are Dogs .Unclean and Water. And they are the biggest dog fighters in this country

It was plastered all over my facebook wall who did it, unless there wasn't enough evidence?? I do hope the killer is brought to Justice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reply Posted by shelley on Tuesday September 17 2013 at 12:47
Well who was it then, name and shame them... I have just put on Facebook I will add another £100.00 to the reward for any name leading to the guilty person???? You need to ring the RSPCA with what you know, even if its not true they will get top the bottom of this. Please tell the RSPCA or Police if you have a name.

I agree 100% someone knows something

Reply Posted by xxxx on Tuesday September 17 2013 at 14:56
the people who did this should be stoned, and i dont condone this in any way but i have to say im not suprised this sort of thing is happening,i regularly go on the pet sites on here and anyone trying to rehome a dog is given a pretty rough time of it,maybe if people wernt so quick to judge, this poor little thing just might have been put up for re homing.if people are going to stop trying to find homes for their animals because of all the abuse they recieve then i can only see this cruelty getting worse

Reply Posted by Zara on Tuesday September 17 2013 at 14:56
Who ever did this to the poor dog needs to be shot. How cruel can people get. If u can't afford to keep your pet there's plenty of rehoming shelters. Cruel!!!!

This evil act will remain with the perpetrators for the rest of their lives, always there in their minds lurking in the background. If it was you,do the right thing, own up. Or you will never have peace. What a beautiful dog, RIP I'm ashamed of the human race at times.

I have owned dogs all my life and read some awful reports and this is up with the worst , I hope whoever did this gets caught and punished for this horrendous act of cruelty. they have murdered a domesticated defenceless animal . Shame on them

iv just sat crying reading this, i have a staffy who is 1 and a half. he is the most loyal loving dog that always wants cuddles and sleeps in bed with me. he is my best friend! but not only that he is a family member and he trusts and loves me. who ever did this to the poor poor thing that dog would have trusted and loved him. he didnt diserve that he would have been a lovely play mate for my dog. just wish i had ree homed him instead of the skum that did. like said in previous comments id chuck another £100 in to the reward but for one the people who know who did this should not have money waved in there faces to tell what they know! they just should name and shame with out the cash! and secondly if they are caught they will only probs get a suspended sentance of 6 month, in my eyes its murder and should be treated in caugh not as animal crualty but aas murder as if it was a liveing person because lets face most animals have more about them that the people in barnsley!
im so angry.

they shouldnt have a trial if and when they are cought.they should be given the same treatment as they gave the poor dog

Reply Posted by Russell Hodgkinson on Sunday September 22 2013 at 08:29
Maybe the previous owners could give the police/rspca a description of those who bought the dog from them then they could start with investigations

Reply Posted by Me on Sunday September 22 2013 at 08:55
Think the facebook pages are part of the issue, if dogs went to charities to be rehomed they could assess the new owners suitability as responsible pet owners rather than who was just prepared to pay the asking price. Sick the people who would do this.

The internet in general is at fault, Gumtree/Preloved go on FREE TO GOOD HOMES how many do you think homecheck. Hardly any, just pass the responsibility to someone else. Most Rescues are full to bursting because of all the overbreeding. If we stopped all this backstreet breeding and made breeders register pay tax and national insurance we would see an improvement. But for now their on a nice little earner, at the expense of the animals. :(

This is utterly disgusting! We are supposed to be being tougher on animal cruelty but it's not being reflected in sentences, people get banned from keeping animals for a few years, big wow! But who checks up on this???? To often no-one! It should be banned for life & prison sentences. If they can do this to animals, who's to say they couldn't do it to a human?!

I wouldn't want a reward to find the dog killer nor would I accept it. I would do it out of goodness of my heart

Surely the previous owner no who they rehomed the dog to, did home check ect thought not. Go on Gumtree/Preloved and look FREE TO GOOD HOME, Dogs need registration documents just like cars so when a dog changes hands there is paperwork and a fee maybe then people will think twice about getting a dog. And Garry just because we are Northerners does not make us irresponsible pet owners. I work in Rescue and its a familiar story up and down the country. Overbred Staffies and not enough good homes, backstreet breeder who have no responsibility for the welfare of an animal other to line their own pockets. So before you get a dog think whether you can honestly give it 16 yrs of a security, happiness and care if not don,t get one.
