Vandal Paints Graffiti On Newly-Painted Town Centre Bridge

Monday September 16 2013

A VANDAL painted graffiti on a railway bridge in Barnsley town centre - just days after it had been repainted.

Council leader Sir Steve Houghton labelled the culprit an 'idiot' and a 'moron' and says he's furious about the graffiti which appeared on the bridge above Eldon Street.

"Network Rail have invested a lot of money improving bridges in the town and this is the thanks they get from some mindless idiot," he said.

"That bridge is above one of the major gateways into the town centre, and what does a moron do? Spray it with graffiti just when the work had been completed and it was looking good.

"This is criminal damage of the very worst kind and I will be urging police to take this very seriously and I would ask members of the public who may have any information about who is responsible to tell the police."

A Network Rail spokesman said: “We have invested approximately £360,000 in repainting the bridge in order to protect the structure from the elements.

"It's disappointing that it has been vandalised so soon after completion.

"We spend many thousands of pounds every year removing offensive graffiti from our network - money which would be better invested in improving services for passengers.”

£360,000 to repaint a bridge?

It is wrong & I hope the person responsible is caught & punished, but Steve Houghton really needs to sort out his priorities "criminal damage of the very worst kind" he says. I think criminal damage to someone's home or personal property would be much more harmful & distressing.

Houghton is keen that we, the people of Barnsley, should do more for ourselves because the council would rather spend money on the town hall than providing services for us. Perhaps he could lead by example. I'd happily dangle him over the bridge attached to a rope so he can paint over the graffiti. Will only take half an hour & cost £5.

There would certainly be a long queue of people wanting to hold that rope!

Typical ,
Post anything but the fact that one of the main ways into town shows what the town is trying to get away from, that its mindless moron city

Another scum bag, probably a youth with parents who care only for their next outing to the local club.
This town is full of lost souls and forgotten dreams, the standard of people in Barnsley is at an all time low.
Hope they find the rat that did it and take away his parents dole to pay for it.

HOW MUCH!! £360.000!! I thought B&Q was expensive for paint. And they've missed middle for bridges.

The vandal that did this should be charged with criminal damage. I bet the council hires them instead for a street art youth interface facilitation workshop.

Typical Barnsley council, they can't do repairs to your house but can squander £360,000 on a bridge.

I saw comments about how loathed the people on benefits were on this site. I think the same people want to read this, then they'll find where the majority of the money goes!

Alex, don't let the facts get in the way of a good moan - It does say Network Rail spent the £360,000 not Barnsley Council.

Wouldnt it have been much cheaper per sq m. to get the painters who painted the forth road bridge. ?

IF the idiot who did it had slipped & broken their neck, it would be sympathy for the poor sods family on here

If some of you had read the article correctly you'd know it was Network Rail and not BMBC who have spent the money. Considering the large engineering operation involving scaffold and road closures, and the professional people involved, £360k isn't so much.

Perhaps you'd prefer the bridges were left until bits started dropping onto you so you could claim some compo.

But then again most people commenting on here can't even see as far as their nose.

I agree with you. Dammed if they do,dammed if they don't. Its just something to pick up on and have another go at the council.

How sad are most of you?
Barnsley is a dump and then Network Rail spend good money and you moan at them. No the council did not waste any money on it nor the tax payer so stop whining.
What you should be annoyed about if you had any sense is the fact that a company spent their money trying to improve the area and some prat did readlly poor graffiti on it. For no good reason.
As for the amount spent would you have preferred that that they spent £100 quid and it rusted and fell to pieces. I do wish people would get their priorities straight and not show their vindictive ignorance.

Reply Posted by g on Saturday September 21 2013 at 22:12
lets get this straight ,, the money spent was for three bridges shot blasted and painted , the other two are on old mill lane , the person as already been named earlier and both his parents are both hard working decent people not as some people have hinted at on the dole or go out drinking all time
