Two Men Fined After Picket Line Abuse

Tuesday December 6 2011

TWO men have been issued with fines from police after hurling abuse at Stagecoach bus drivers who chose to work on a strike day.

Stagecoach drivers were involved in a second round of strikes last weekend but the company brought in 100 managers and drivers from other areas to cover the bus services.

On Friday, two men were issued with £80 fines for shouting abuse at the drivers who chose to work.

Inspector Julie Mitchell said on her Facebook page: "SYP supports peaceful picketing. Peaceful does not mean shouting abuse at those who choose to work."

I fully support the drivers, the company has a history of divide and rule.It is noted for draconian industrial relations.I do not agree with swearing in earshot of kids though.I did my bit by catching the train during the day and walking home later.I will not board a bus driven by Scab labour. And rightly so -- they were even moved on by the police at 1.30pm

The Interchange and grounds around it are Private Property (owned by SYPTE) and the police have no jurisdiction to fine people whilst on the private property (unless instructed by SYPTE)
The area the drivers stand and shout abuse is council owned - and the drivers are not allowed to even enter the Interchange or any of Stagecoach property whilst on strike.

I like the comments "kids do it so it's okay for us to" What a shining example to set. Police should be fining kids as well then.
Also you're really gonna get the public on your side by shouting and swearing at the busses your customers are on. I support the strike, but did you honestly think the whole of Barnsley was going to stand still whilst you did it? Some of your drivers want sacking anyway if that's the kind of behaviour you get up to. you could have been more dignified just by talking and explaining to the public why you were striking and made much more of an impact. I hope both the management and those bus drivers that are constantly rude, mean, and treat their customers with contempt all get the sack.

the drivers they drafted in were alot  more joyful and fun than our usual drivers.  Bring them back.

they can enter interchange, but cant be hurling abuse at anyone, i.e they cannot picket in there.
