Residents Asked For Views On Police's Stop And Search Powers

BARNSLEY'S residents are being asked for their views on the police's stop and search powers.

The consultation is part of ongoing work by Shaun Wright, the Police and Crime Commissioner, to ensure the highest standards of policing.

"Stop and search is an important tool in the armoury of the police to combat crime and to catch offenders," Mr Wright said.

"But for years there have been concerns about whether police forces use the powers appropriately, proportionately and fairly."

Mr Wright wants to understand how local people feel and to hear about experiences from those stopped and searched.

Results from the consultation, which finishes on September 17, will be sent to the Home Office for review and to potentially revise how police forces use the powers in the future.

Police should go for it , if people got nothing to hide then they won't mind being searched.

An what will more stop n search achieve people ,
Look at the facts stop and search was fazed out in all major cities because it caused more tensions and violence between the people and the understaffed police who in turn thought , we should b armed to protect our officers...well the criminals thort the same...over 20 shootings in Sheffield this year..what we need is police in schools starting with the nursery s , ..kids need to grow up with the police.

However you dress this up.
stop and search is against the human rights act 1998.
If a. young man is walking down the street with a carrier bag with goods in it
he has no right to be stopped an searched by police or anyone else.
If a n old woman of 75 was walking down the street with an identical carrier bag with goods in it. why would they not stop and search her. she could just as easily be carrying things for her grandson so he doesnt get searched but the young man would get searched.
Making it against the law on more than one count of civil rights.
One would be predjudice
the other. freedom to move around without been harassed the police if they did there work instead of shortcutting they would still catch there man

Well im all for it ive got nothing to hide! Plus if someone did have something to hide id hope the police would have the power to search! You'll all be complaining when drugs are being smuggled left right and centre n people are walking around armed and smug knowing they wont get searched...bloody crime rates going to soar! Taking away our right to feel safe n the polices right to have power they should have to stop crime!

Of course you have nothing to hide
its nothing to do with it its the fact that you could be walking round barnsley and have your bags searched in front of people and how would you feel .
How do you feel when you come out of a shop and the alarm goes off.
you havnt nicked anything but the rest of the people in the shop think you have.
How do you feel when everybody is looking at you.
There are many scenarios that is just one

If the reason for stop and search replaces the old wrongfull arrest then that is because they made so many wrongfull arrests

Lets please be clear about this.Police DO NOT have unrestricted powers of 'stop and search'. They MUST give a reason to why they are exercising. the search...if this happens to you and you believe they are acting without reasonable excuse
.make an official complaint....

Reply Posted by rog on Tuesday August 20 2013 at 21:48
However I have no problem with them stopping every CORSA, when the owner is wearing a baseball cap.....

Trust me i know from the reality
any excuse is a good excuse to them and what is going to happen when you complain.
It will be looked into

Complaints are looked into normally. That's the point.

I wouldn't like to be stopped and I can see most ordinary shoppers wouldn't be stopped. But embarrassment aside,I can understand the need sometimes. Its a tough one. I know I wouldn't like to be robbed at knife point,so stop and search maybe has its place. Sad but true. I have actually been grabbed by a guy in broad daylight in town, and that was bad. Its really all about safety for ordinary people. I doubt the police would stop people without reason.

Reasonable people have no problem with stop and search. I just hope that the police get on and do it.

Mae Brussel...It seems you have as much knowledge of police powers, as you do of medicine. I have out lined the stop and search powers for you below, please read them and inform me which parts of the human rights act they breach.

A police officer has powers to stop and search you if they have ‘reasonable grounds’ to suspect you’re carrying:

illegal drugs

a weapon

stolen property

something which could be used to commit a crime, eg a crowbar

You can only be stopped and searched without reasonable grounds if it has been approved by a senior police officer. This can happen if it is suspected that:

serious violence could take place

you’re carrying a weapon or have used one

you’re in a specific location or area.

So going back to your pointless scenario, neither the young man or elderly lady would be searched as there are no grounds to suspect they would be carrying any of the listed items. If you change the setting and say they were both walking through an area of high burglary crimes at say 2am, then both could legally be searched.

I suggest you start reading up in things before spouting off on here and looking stupid!!
