Barnsley Man Thanks Town's Fundraisers After Las Vegas Trip

A BARNSLEY man with terminal brain cancer has thanked the town's fundraisers for helping him go on 'the trip of a lifetime' to Las Vegas.

Ben Gillott, 24, who was told last September that he had 12-14 months to live, has returned from the 11-day trip with fiancee Steph Clamp, 21.

They stayed in the luxurious Bellagio hotel - home of the famous dancing fountains - flew across the Grand Canyon, tried slots, blackjack and poker in the casinos, went to the Titanic museum and dined in Gordon Ramsay's restaurant.

They also went to see American illusionists Penn and Teller - where Ben was asked to help on stage.

They took in the Cirque Du Soleil circus, saw dolphins perform and went to a striptease spectacular called Peepshow. "It was Steph who wanted to go to that," joked Ben.

He said the holiday was 'incredible' and that he was overwhelmed by fundraisers who raised thousands of pounds for the trip with some left over for his care. Wellwishers in Barnsley organised dozens of events for Ben including a five-band gig at the Lucorum.

Ben, of Jordan Hill, Gawber, has gone through gruelling surgery and chemotherapy and is now celebrating the fact that his latest treatment has helped shrink his tumour - a glioblastoma multi-forme grade 4 tumour, one of the most aggressive.

It causes personality changes and has affected Ben's vision and short-term memory.

He said: "It's still terminal but I may now get more time - if it starts growing back they can operate again and give me more chemotherapy."

The disease cut short a bright future for Ben. He graduated in 2011 with a first class degree in business and ICT from Sheffield Hallam University and had just started a promising career in web-hosting.

He said he and Steph plan to carry on enjoying life to the full.
