Nipsy Brought Forward For A New Generation

Monday December 5 2011

THE OLD game of Nipsy is to be resurrected across Barnsley as part of a project that will see it once again brought into schools.

Experience Barnsley (the museum's project) has teamed up with the Barnsley Newham Partnership to run the project to celebrate Barnsley’s sporting heritage.

The museum is seeking footage, photographs and memories of Nipsy being played in Barnsley to show the schools and to reintroduce it.

A spokesman said: "The best Nipsy players made their carefully crafted stick from a coal pick handle, and a shaved piece of wood was used as the Nipsy on an upturned brick. The wood was hit hard from the brick into the air, and then again with the aim of hitting it the furthest. The way it was played varied in each place, but generally it was known as a poor man's golf."
