Police's Dog Unit Could Be Reduced After Funding Cuts

Police dogs set to be affected by cuts Police dogs set to be affected by cuts

SOUTH Yorkshire Police's dog handlers have been warned their unit faces cuts.

The move is being challenged by dog handlers and the Police Federation, is being considered after government funding was cut by £49.3million.

Dog handlers fear their unit could be halved - leading to the loss of 20 posts.

A number have contacted the South Yorkshire branch of the Police Federation to express fears over job losses and the impact the loss of dogs would have on crime fighting.

"Dogs and their handlers are definitely frontline resources so this puts to bed the government lies about cost-cutting not affecting the front line," said Neil Bowles, the Police Federation's chairman.

"I have had dog handlers approach me worried about the future. Nottinghamshire Police went down this route and reduced the number of dogs and handlers but soon realised they had made a mistake and are recruiting again."

Chief Constable David Crompton said: "We are looking at every aspect of policing to identify savings and this includes the Dog Support Unit.

"We have more dogs and handlers than similar or larger police forces so it is entirely legitimate to examine what options are available to make savings as part of a wider review of our operational support services.

"No decisions have been made at this stage but proposals have been submitted to reduce numbers, which will save the force money."

They need the money to buy new curtains and cushions for the new custody unit at Barnsley to make it comfortable for detainees. What a farce!!!

Yes folks the LUNATICS are about to run the Asylum ! so lets ask the people , Q what would you prefer ....... to keep a proper crime fighting unit like Dog Handlers, with Dogs who crims/low life, would rather not mess with, or a glorified hotel , sorry custody suite for habitual "neer do wells " ? think its what you call a no brainer ! If we had intelligent officials in the " TOP JOBS " we wouldnt be having this debate.

There is more justice at the end of a Police dog than you get in Mags/ Crown Court. The dog handling role is a more specialised role than any other in the Police force as the dogs live with the handlers throughout their working life. Disband the Underwater search unit and ut back on the Mounted Units

@Hally, they already have done both of your suggestions.
Now the Police are letting in sorry recruiting PCSOs and specials instead of intelligent members of the public with fitness and social skills. All the PCSOs and Specials I have seen would not have been able to get in 5 years ago.
All this is Policing on the cheap.
This is after pay freezes for the last 4 or 5 years and pension raiding. Minimum staffing is rife and yet money gets spent on cell areas, air conditioning for the bosses offices and even the civilians get nice desks. Meanwhile real bobbies on the frontline including dog handlers get shafted time and again. Plus why build Robert Dyson house complete with gym and restaurant for the bosses and then close the canteens in the nicks for hard working frontline officers??

beep beep....thats a bit harsh and a sweeping generalisation of all PCSOs and Specials. Over the years Ive worked with some crap ones but also worked along side some crap coppers too. My lad did 4 yrs as a PCSO in Leeds and is now fully fledged copper at Pudsey and several of his other mates have done the same. Oh and the irony of the photo above is that the handler in the picture got ' cut back ' within weeks of finishing his course about 4 yrs back !

No it was not sweeping at all or harsh. How can someone who sits in an office or a van all day, barely use a radio, eat pasties and clock off at 8 or 9pm and never work when it is dark suddenly be expected to do a proper police officers roll. It is just policing on the cheap. Specials and PCSOs cannot arrest, do paperwork, use equipment properly not can most of them pass a fitness test or write English well enough to prepare files for court or do statements. They do not interview and most cannot drive properly.
As for the picture above, not sure who you are referring to but I am guessing you are talking nonsense.

Not talking nonsense I worked with the lad for 5yrs so that is a fact. All I can say then is they obviously have a better class of PCSO up in West Yorks, Specials I can't really comment on as I never really worked with any. 30 yrs service and 23yrs as a dog handler so Im not just adding this for a laugh

They wanna save money by getting rid of things that are actually needed, but they spend the money on shite that isn't needed.
It's ridiculous
