Mother Gets Suspended Jail Term

Wednesday July 24 2013

Barnsley Magistrates' Court Barnsley Magistrates' Court

A MOTHER-OF-THREE has been given a suspended jail term after claiming about £24,000 in benefits over six years while working part-time.

Lisa Long, 35, claimed income support, housing benefit and jobseekers' allowance between 2004 and 2010 and had part-time jobs at a golf course and a security firm, Barnsley Magistrates' Court was told.

She was given a 32-week jail sentence, suspended for a year and a 16-week curfew.

Anne Wroe, prosecuting, said Long, of Probert Avenue, Goldthorpe, never told the Department of Work and Pensions that she was working.

She said: "This goes back to 2004. She claimed about £34,000 which is a substantial amount.

"Miss Long accepted she signed on for a variety of benefits every two weeks and never said her circumstances had changed.

"It seems impossible to believe she did not know she should not have continued claiming the benefits she did."

Morgan Hogarth, defending, said Long would have been entitled to reduced benefits when she started working part-time.

He said she had been confused about her benefits entitlement and there had been a misunderstanding.

Long admitted four charges of benefit fraud. She was ordered to attend 25 sessions at a project for women.

How did she get away with it for all that time?? Its ridiculous wouldn't it show with her NI number + TAX? Unless she was being paid cash in hand from the golf course + security firm?? If so then surely these places show be fined too! I agree she should be made to pay all that back by working for free.

Shock news to label the poor as scroungers thats all...the figure should be the amount that she earned illegally. Same in Liverpool where a single mum on benefits of £11,000 per year, helped out at the youth centre over the school holidays and was paid £20 per week over six week. £120 total but the headline read "SCROUNGER MUM CLAIMS £66,000 while working" made up from these figures (for the last six years she has been on benefits of 11,000 per year)

if you cant look after them, dont have them its as simple as that!
dont scrounge of the hard working taxpayer. this woman should have gone to jail and her kids taken into care.

So easily said by far too many men Craig. How about all women cross their legs until men start growing a pair and taking responsibility for their offspring.

Just becasue a woman has a child does not make her bad. At least she is trying to bring her kids up. Where are the men in all of these stories? Oh yeah down the pub or getting another woman preggers or on the xbox.........

Being that's she's brought them up showing them how to illegally claim benefits - how about she now shows them how to pay back the money that she fraudulently claimed too.

It's wrong what she did but dont go assuming all people are the same not everyone has a luxury of a bloody job. I'm a single young mum of two kids and forced to claim benefits while looking for work. There aren't a lot of jobs out there so some people are forced to claim just because the ones who are decent and claim as they should doesn't mean they are the same as those who swindle the system. One day the tables may turn and it could be you the " tax payers " in the same situation as most of uk having to claim to get by.

Reply Posted by Craig on Wednesday July 24 2013 at 15:08
theres always a job to be had, problem is people like you are too lazy to go out and get them, if you cant afford two kids love dont have them its as simple as that. dont put pressure on our claims system like the rest of the low lifes in britan.
ive always had a job from school im 30 now so dont give me theres no jobs.

I agree.
Problem is the system is far too easy to beat and inter-governmental agencies just don't "speak" to each other.
We've all seen many a young girl get herself knocked up just so she can get a council house and everything paid for, there are quite a few of my cousins that have done just that, they couldn't afford them either but weren't bothered as they knew the state would pick up the tab.

Back on topic:

"He said she had been confused about her benefits entitlement and there had been a misunderstanding."

"misunderstanding" course there was, she knew exactly what she was doing

The punishment does not match the crime, 16 weeks curfew is a joke!

AS is the welfare and courts system in this country.

How would a woman get herself knocked up? I'm perplexed.

As a fellow bloke with a job - I'm ashamed to say that you're from the same species Craig - I thought people like you were extinct (if not then you should be). Perhaps you ought to live in the real world instead of your own fantasy land!!

well said craig, too many young people having kids they can'f afford. to the lady above, your a young single mum with 2 kids that says it all for barnsley im afraid. you are a poster girl for athersley.

Reply Posted by Mini on Sunday July 28 2013 at 20:15
Excuse me! I have lived in athersley for 25 years, brought up MY 4 children as a single parent and not claimed 1p in benefits! I have worked since leaving school and am proud to say that my kids (now grown up) are respectable working people. Don't tar us all with the same brush.
Back to the original subject.... Why was it suspended? She should be paying the price for a crime!

Reply Posted by Sharon on Wednesday July 24 2013 at 15:14
Even if she'd changed her circumstances working part time the only thing that would change is she wouldn't be signing on. She would still be entitled to housing benefit, income support and working tax (child care element maybe, which is still a benefit from the state, provided by the hard working tax payer) It's all swings and roundabouts and she's not a scrounger if she's bloody working and I doubt her 'wage' would be enough to live off and provide for the children that took two people to create. HERE'S AN IDEA, HOW ABOUT BANNING SEX. Bet the hard working tax payer wouldn't like that.

Reply Posted by steve on Wednesday July 24 2013 at 15:14
there are no decent people that claim unknown! if you cant look after yourself then why should someone else have to, wheres the logic in that? i dont want to support you or your sprogs but i have to because i pay tax.

to gimmegimme, why the hell shouldn't she work?? whats does being a mum have to do with it??????? i was a single mum of 2 and worked.. think any1 who defrauds the working tax-payer should have to pay every single penny back, even if it takes them the rest of their lives.

Clues in the title Job Seekers seeking a job not here have job seekers because you have found Two!!!!

She's not a scrounger she worked she was just beating the system. Now Royal Family they are the scroungers.

Reply Posted by craig on Thursday July 25 2013 at 13:25
but dave beating the system means ripping off the taxpayer!
you my friend must not be a taxpayer as you would be more intrestead in where your money is going. if we cant get our own morals right we will never sort the country out, we are doomed like the rest of the crappy mining towns in barnsley.

Reply Posted by A Nonnie Mouse on Monday July 29 2013 at 13:50
If you think that the mining towns in Barnsley are crappy then why don't you do something about it Craig - it's so easy for everyone to get a job I'm sure you could do something worthwhile.
What this area needs is positivity, investment and motivation - people moaning and running the area down, running people down and making them feel worthless, criticising a benefits system which pays a fortune into the local community and creates jobs through the spending power it brings is good. What is weak is the management and control of the system and that is where the flaw is - with the government and councillors and not the people who need this money.
If you want to moan, do something constructively and vote to get rid of the current Councillors who get in by default because they claim to be Labour and get someone in who stands for your values. Think positive, talk positive and act positive and support the local communities by buying and shopping local instead of through national chains!!!

sharon whats that got to do with anything?

Reply Posted by Cathy on Thursday July 25 2013 at 19:00
I dont believe for one minute she was ' confused and it was a misunderstanding '.
She wasnt too confused to claim the benefits in the first place and then get herself two jobs.
She should have to pay back any overpayment ( calculated using what she was paid and what she should have been paid ).
The two employers should have a full check to see if they are collusive employers.

dont judge all single parent mums the same we dont know their circumstances they could have been married or in a relationship and working but they have ended up as single parents, a lot of these young mothers end up in this situation because the so called responsible fathers do a runner as soon as things get tough leaving the mothers with a couple of kids to feed and probably debts to pay while the fathers are moving on to the next woman who will more than likely end up in the same situation as the last one,and no im not condoning what this woman did but i can understand why she did it

All you people who say there are no jobs out there need to be ashamed of yourself. Ive had a job since i was 15. Since then ive gone from full time job to full time job. Ive never claimed benefits. Im now 21, married, mum to a 5 month old and have a mortgage. My husband works hard too. Thanks to all these benefit scroungers i have to put up with dirty looks and remarks as a young mum i get tarred with the same dirty brush. It makes me sick. I got told whilw out shoppin in doncaster that i was "lucky" as i made this point to scruffs that were trying to get me to sign a petition for the bwdroom tax. No i am not lucky i am a hard bloody worker! So all these "mistakes" that were made in claiming benefits is excuses. Get a job. Stop complaining.

South Yorkshire is rife with un married people walking about unashamed with children who are only used as a means of finance. The poor little kids don't have a chance, the parents of the majority teach each other the different ways of how to fiddle the system, and I don't include the people who through no fault of there own are due to every Penney. The only people I feel sorry for is the children, sorry to say but they can only grow up like there parents, jobless and on benefits.?

Reply Posted by Jayne on Sunday July 28 2013 at 20:56
She should be made to pay every single penny back. Me and my husband work, I look after my own children and do not expect anyone else to. My kids, my responsibility. People are too reliant on handouts and its not right. As for dave saying the royals are scrounges..... get ya facts right mate. The royal family make more money than they take, Andrew fought in the Falklands, William is a search and rescue pilot in the RAF and Harry serves in the forces. Well that's more work than the benefit sponges have ever done. Even the royal baby put more money into our country than this lady has done in 30 years. Am glad she's been caught and I hope there are many more to come

Praise the LORD!

Reply Posted by A Nonnie Mouse on Monday July 29 2013 at 14:01
Is it Jesus that is Almighty or God? By the way - are you going to pray for her sins and as a christian are you supposed to damn people to destruction, surely you would hope that they were delivered from their blasphemous ways not wish them a life in eternal hell.
Aren't Christians supposed to be more charitable - support your community don't try to destroy it.

What this area needs is more money spending and not less - lets encourage people to work and come off benefits, not by cutting or stopping benefits but by educating and training people.
If people are out of work and getting benefits, lets get them working to improve communities, set up volunteer schemes to get the kids involved, get schools involved by educating kids before they leave and getting local projects funded.
Dont spend money in National corporations unless they are prepared to give back to community projects or pay into communities and then praise the ones that do.
Work together as Barnsley people don't just moan and criticise. This lady did wrong and is being punished for it, if you don't like her punishment or think something needs doing about it, contact your MP and councillors to get them to act on it. After all they're paid to represent your views, use them!!
