Police Appeal After Bank Robbery

Wednesday July 20 2011

FORENSICS experts are on stand-by waiting to gather extra evidence that might lead police to catch the culprits behind the Cudworth bank robbery yesterday.

Police have today made a fresh appeal for information into the robbery of HSBC bank, Barnsley Road, Cudworth which took place at around 12pm yesterday (Tuesday, 19 July).

It is believed a Silver Wira Lux Proton vehicle was used during the course of the robbery. It is thought this vehicle drove away from the back of the bank across Cudworth Welfare Park after the attack where it is believed the fencing may have been previously weakened to allow the vehicle to drive straight to a field adjacent to the Rose Tree Estate where it was burnt out.

It is thought one of the believed offenders is around 5ft 7in and of a stocky build and spoke with a northern accent.

Police are now urging anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in Cudworth Welfare Park the day before the attack, or saw any suspicious activity in and around the bank including the rear of the building, in the days leading up to the attack to contact them.

DCI Sean Middleton of South Yorkshire Police said: “It is believed the offenders escaped in a Silver Wira Lux Proton vehicle which was later found burnt out in a field adjacent to the Rose Tree Estate.
“This was a well planned attack which would have taken a lot of preparation. Luckily, no firearms were seen, and no-one was physically injured, however, all staff were left shaken and distressed as a result of the robbery.

“I have a dedicated team of detectives investigating this who are pursuing various lines of enquiry. They are prioritising forensic examinations of the scene and will be able to deal quickly with any information provided to us.

“Thankfully, this is a very rare offence in South Yorkshire and I encourage anyone with information to come forward. If you witnessed anything suspicious in the area of the park or the bank, in the days leading up to, or the day of the robbery, please contact South Yorkshire Police or alternatively contact Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.”
