Travellers Set Up Camp On Kids' Playing Field

Monday July 15 2013

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

A GROUP of travellers have set up camp on a playing field at Kingstone where youngsters meet to play football every weekend.

They have moved at least 20 caravans onto the recreation ground off Broadway and strung up washing lines between trees.

One woman on Linton Close, who did not want to be named, said: "I saw them at the weekend and thought it must be the Caravan Club. It was only when I saw the washing hung up I realised it must be travellers."

Another said she believed they had broken a lock on a gate to the park to gain entry.

She added: “There are kids who play football on there most Sundays, it’s not fair. What are they going to do now? I don’t agree with them being there, they’re always going on land where they shouldn’t be.”

A spokesman for Barnsley Council said: "This group of travellers has recently encamped illegally.

"A legal process has begun, with the final decision on the appropriate legal action to be decided at a case conference, and following an encampment visit by a Barnsley Council officer."

Why would anyone want to play football on a playing field which is not theirs? Pathetic kids!

It's a football ground, like the one they have in Atherley.

Surely the council and police have the power to remove these travellers. They're trespassing illegally on private land owned by the council. I'm sure the football clubs are going to refuse to pay rent, and the travellers aren't exactly going to keep the pitch in tip top condition. Get em shifted

Travellers are what they are, Travellers! so they do need to stop and rest now and then but what does get my goat up is that they leave it a complete mess, rubbish everywhere burnt out caravans, gas bottles and on a playing field. Football gets played there all the time and if it was a season of football where are they supposed to play. Its not on at all. Looks a right mess now with washing hung up on the trees lol surely they could string up between the vans lol

Absolutely disgusting. They think they have the right to set up camp anywhere they choose whether legal (rarely) or not. How long is it going to take to move them off? The school holidays start next week so where are the local kids going to play then. I wonder what would happen if I and a group of friends set up camp on the same field. It's obvious what would happen, the police and councillors would be there with a warrant straight away to evict us. The trouble is nowadays, the authorities daren't say a word to these people because of race relations.

I would agree with you David personally.

travellers dont help themselves..they want to be separate from the rest of society yet trespass on land & leave a huge mess behind

The council should hire a security firm to move them on using a 'whatever it takes' attitude.

this is to Stuart....the kids play for proper teams who pay hundreds a year to rent these pitches to play on....I know this because i run a team, and we rent a council pitch for £335 a year. The same happened to us a couple of years ago, we had to cancel a match and we got a fine for it from the FA...

Love how everyone's chipping in about it now, travelers have been pitching up in that field for well over a decade!! In all honesty it's not a matter of fair and unfair it's a matter of it's illegal - if you suspect Travelers are pitching up in a field and you don't know if it's legal for them to do so - phone the council ask for whatever department deals with parkland and travelers and inform them about it and ask them to check it out instead of just sitting behind your computers ranting on here!

I don't no why ppl have such a problem with travelers they don't hurt any body and yes it might not look good but its a dam sight better than smackheads all over leaving there shit all over the place maby the council should concentrait on getting that under controle before they start on travellers

Well Sharnie, they dont hurt anybody do they? Thats why a group of them went into my local pub only last week and got the landlords pet dog, a really gentle pug, and threw it over the balcony. A drop of over 12 ft. They seriously hurt that poor dog and it was lucky to survive. The whole incident was captured on cctv.

...and they're back! making a mockery of the impotent council.

just one simple question.. how are they allowed to get away with this time after time when any other house dweller would no doubt end up being prosecuted or immediately moved on for the same behaviour!
