A61 Brings Traffic To A Standstill

Monday July 15 2013

Cllr Roy Miller Cllr Roy Miller

TOWN centre roads came to a standstill last week as the final push to finish the new bus corridor on Wakefield Road/Burton Road got underway.

Old Mill Lane was reduced to one inbound lane, two outbound lanes, and an outbound lane at the Burton Road junction because of the reduced road width.

It was to allow new inbound lanes to be constructed, remove a free-flowing outbound lane and install a second set of traffic signals at the Burton Road junction.

The change caused chaos through the afternoon, bringing Old Mill Lane, Wakefield Road and Burton Road to a standstill and had a knock-on effect causing standing traffic on Harborough Hill Road and Huddersfield Road.

Cllr Roy Miller is urging people to be patient.

"Most of the delays experienced on Monday were caused by frustrated and inconsiderate drivers," he said. "They ignored red lights and subsequently blocked the road for people coming the opposite way, whose signals would then have been on green.

"Eventually, this caused gridlock, which had to be cleared manually.

"We accept that there would have been some additional delays to traffic resulting from the loss of one outbound lane.

"However, this would not have been a problem had people obeyed the Highway Code and stopped when the lights instructed them to do so."

"Most of the delays caused by inconsiderate drivers" says Coun Miller. No ALL of the delays have been caused by your inefficiencies in letting this project drift to 2 years on one of Barnsley's busiest roads and to what avail - so buses can get through easier??What about "normal" motorists who pay their road taxes and what about ratepayers paying for this? We still haven't found out yet what the settlement was for the road on Wickes' land for which Coun Miller forgot to get planning permission in his haste to get funding

"Most of the delays experienced on Monday were caused by frustrated and inconsiderate drivers...

I find this Cllr an insult and totally out of touch with the current situation. The man is an out of touch joke! The pathways are dangerous near the corner and the whole episode should be investigated. What an arrogant Cllr he has become!

Councillor Miller is short sighted and has views out of line with the residents of Barnsley. He does not know that inconsiderate drivers or people ignoring red lights caused this. If there is no yellow hatched box or markings saying keep clear then drivers may pull across and queue. I logged a complaint about these roadworks 10 days ago using the councils own website, and chased it up with a phone call. Despite speaking to the complaints department and it being passed on to a supervisor in the highways department I have still not been given the courtesy of a reply.
Roy Miller should get his finger pulled out and should not have signed off the works to start without owning the land at Wickes. Roy Miller is in charge of supervising these road works on behalf of the council and looks at the cows ear of a job he is making of it. Apparently the delays were caused by the change in road priorities and lanes from the roadworks being altered not from inconsiderate motorists. The real person in charge of any delays was the person in charge of the roadworks Roy Perhaps more notice and clearer details would help Roy or perhaps if you just got them speeded up a bit and working on it a little more than 1 person or 1 day every so often it would get finished and people could move on.
By the way Roy, there are still POT HOLES AND LOOSE CHIPPINGS in those roadworks which you claim are all fixed and are swept up regularly. Deffo not getting my vote next time!!

Typical arrogance from Barnsley Council, but then this is to be expected when there is no viable (or acceptable) opposition to them in this town. The whole project has been a farce from the start.

Councillor Miller has demonstrated on this project and on others, that he is 'not up to the job' I would not trust him to be in charge of a packet of biscuits.

"Most of the delays experienced on Monday were caused by frustrated and inconsiderate drivers," he said. Nothing to do with incompetent not fit for purpose council then. Someone at the council should be held responsible for this fiasco who in their right mind would start spending OUR money on a project that they have not bought the land to do it. Wickes have all the balls in their court why shouldn't they hold out for as much money as they can get for the land. Just remember this fiasco when you next see Councillor Miller's name on the ballot form and show your disgust.

Unexpected service and gas lines. The Gasometer was there at 50+ years, the council use to make town gas there! So lots of pipes is to be expected. Upteen traffic lights, houses on side factory / warehouses on the other canal / railway used to run under the bridge arch so I would expect cabling to cross over that bridge (under the surface).

There a system in the Civic Hall that lets you see whats under the ground (for planning applications) gas water electricity etc. Maybe "Clr" Miller needs use the services.

"The works will be done by the end of the school holidays." Clr Miller (~4th July)
If not can we have a rebat on the council tax for every day past that.

Want to guarantee that a project go over budget or be delayed or cancelled get a politician involved.

I challenge WAB to put these public views to Roy Miller and ask him for a real comment and a firm commitment to get it sorted. He has recently produced a leaflet for the Darton East ward bragging about how much he and his fellow Labour Councillors for the Ward have done.
One of these other Councillors is Harry Spence who stood as and was elected as an independent candidate - who converted across to Labour when he wanted to act as a sponsor and to support his daughters campaign to get elected as the 3rd Labour candidate for our ward.
The council has become a joke - Roy Miller has simply turned into Coco The Clown who isn't up to the job - ask him if he will stand down as this is clearly what the public want. There is not one person who has supported the council throughout this farce and Roy Miller is the one with the custard pie in his face, in the form of constant derision and criticism.

I totally agree Jon, Miller is clearly not up to the job and should have retired by now.
As for Spence, he knew he would never be able to get a foothold in the council being an independent and thus "defected" to the old boys network.
He has lost all credibility now and I most certainly wont be voting for any of the "old boys" next time around.

so fed up with the lies and false promises we keep getting from miller. he does not live in the area and has no idea what it like for us residents. recently said the air is cleaner well come and clean my windows and doors in and outside everyday and see the dirt we have to clean. the flumes are worse and there is no site of any apology from him and his crap council to the residents. i know they will not get my vote. i have no respect for Barnsley council because of Labour and him.

Councillor miller dosn't live in the real world with his expense accounts and trappings of playing at being a councillor, supposedly representing the residents of barnsley! let him live on wakefield road with all the upeavel and muck mayhem and all that goes with the chaos that is wakefield road day in day out for the last 3 years.. . come on miller stop TALKING and start DOING something or is to much to handle and a lot to loose....

Cllr Roy Miller is out of touch, arrogant, and looking to blame others for the incompetence of this wretched council – typical of the incompetent clowns that have too much influence over our life. He should resign (or be sacked) along with most of his colleagues. The roadwork’s are a disgrace and the chaos they are causing are a disgrace and somebody should be made to answer for this mess.

WAB please ensure that these comments are passed on to Mr Miller and ask if he will be considering his position.

How many have been sacked over this debacle. Surely this guy is the next to go

WAB - any chance you could find out how local members of the community can put forward a vot of no confidence in a councillor and get him removed/to stand down. This is in the publics interest and you have yet to see one single comment standing up for Roy Miller yet there are hundreds against him? Is this not a public interest topic? Why not open a WAB debate on who people feel is to blame for the delays on Wakefield Road??? You run a lot of stories time and again - why not open one up on Wakefield Road roadworks again as they are still not finished and are a danger to road users especially motorcyclists???

"The works will be done by the end of the school holidays."

2 1/2 weeks to go. tick tock

Dear WAB, we are 1 week to go to the end of the school holidays and there is no way that these roadworks are going to be completed - are you aware that once they are finished there are going to be resurfacing works on Wakefield Road all the way from Smithies traffic lights down to the these roadworks that are supposed to last another 3 weeks.... I challenge you again to ask Roy Miller for comments on completion dates and why this is still taking so long???
