RSPCA Appeal For Witnesses After 'Emaciated' Dog Dies

Wednesday July 10 2013

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

AN emaciated dog in an appalling condition was found collapsed on a quiet village road.

The black and tan terrier, believed to be between 14 and 16 years old, was close to death when RSPCA inspectors arrived at Old Mill Lane, Thurgoland last week.

It was severely arthritic, suffering from dermatitis and fur loss, and had a large tumour on its throat.

RSPCA chief inspector Matt Bell, who attended the incident at about 11pm, said: "It’s really sad that, at a time when the RSPCA has been reporting that animals are being treated like rubbish due to the alarming increase in them being abandoned, I get a call to such a vulnerable, elderly dog abandoned on an isolated country lane.

"This dog clearly could not have strayed anywhere as she was in such an appalling condition."

Inspector Bell took the animal home overnight and made it comfortable. However it had to be put down the following day because of chronic illness.

"Had we not got the call she would have died of exposure overnight," Matt added.

"I take some comfort that she was found and did not spend her last night alone, cold and exhausted, dumped in a country lane."

Any information about the incident should be reported to the appeal line on 0300 123 8018.

Why on earth didnt somebody do something before hand? Was it roaming around for a long time or what? Half of the time people see animals roaming or in a bad way but do nothing about it, just pass it on as "somebody else" will do something, I havnt got time and the age old "its not my problem".....I KNOW WHAT....STOP BREEDING ANIMALS FOR A QUICK BUCK.....GET THEM NEUTERED !! People who breed any animal for money are twats. Dont want to hear about "continuation of the breed" or "love them that much we want another"..blah blah blah all I hear is Kercchhhiinnggg!! Money money money. Stop breeding dogs you thick morons. Look after the animals youve got and dont get an animal if you cant give it the medical treatment it needs, vacs, insurance etc etc. Morons.

this article is ironic,,as only 2hrs ago my sister who lives in old mill lane ,,,,near asda,,told me about a alsation,,,quite old walking down the road....his or her back end had gone,,,as they do in these type of dogs,,,in need of a drink,,,was on its own,,,,no-one with it,,,,she went across with a bowl of water,,,,lapped it up....she said it was in a terrible state,,,just wandering about,,poor thing looked as tho it had walked miles and miles........heartbreaking to hear of such things,,,,,,still do not know what happened to it as it was reported.

It is very sad but maybe it was someone who loved the dog but couldn't afford vet fees and was too ashamed, people get pets but they don't realise how much these vets charge vets just think everyone as hundreds of pounds to pay at a visit. Always ask how much it will cost when you have a pet looked at they think you just pull out notes for the fun of it. Vets pretend to care but they only care about what they can fleece you for.

Don't blame Vets for the treatment this Dog suffered, you do realise there is the PDSA... This is mall Treatment and the dogs owner if found should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law..... It's simple, if you have a child and mistreat it the you commit an offence, the same applies for a dog if you mistreat that dog then its a criminal offence.... END OF!

Ok so maybe I can clear a few things up for you small minded people, this dog was not abandoned nor miss treated it was an elderly pet of 20 years and was In no pain and had received treatment from vets. Due to her age she had lost weight but was under no circumstances starved or abused!! She had got out of the garden and was picked up! The matter has been cleared up with the RSPCA who have a apologised for how the situation was handled. So maybe you shouldn't always believe what you read and should keep your threats to yourself because defamation of character is also an offence.
