Court Summons Are An 'Attack On The Vulnerable'

Tuesday July 9 2013

'An attack on the vulnerable', says Peter Bottrill 'An attack on the vulnerable', says Peter Bottrill

A FORMER casino manager says costs for court summons for non-payment of council tax are an attack on the vulnerable.

Peter Bottrill, 66, fell £20 behind on his council tax in August last year but then received a summons with court costs of £52.

He says the court costs are not an appropriate reflection and that he is raising the matter with the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Barnsley Council has sent Mr Bottrill a method of how the courts reach their costs and says the matter is now closed.

Mr Bottrill said: "These charges are a way of getting at the most vulnerable. I understand 5,000 summons to court have gone out - that makes £260,000 to be collected in costs.

"I also question the description of 'costs' when the figure they've reached is based on estimates.

"People receiving these summons don't usually question it - they just accept it - when it's just a way of making money."

Perhaps if everyone affected by pot-holes, anti-social behavior and the lack of bin collections (particularly those with an empty property), poor education standards (tick box culture), sloppy health care (5 suspended from Rawmarsh care home for neglect) were to invoice the council for failing to provide even an adequate service, plus of course *estimated* court costs what do we think the council's response would be?

How ironic, a casino manager (or ex) is having a go at an organization for targeting vulnerable people. Is that not what casinos do??? Karma pal! Your lucky its only £52 and not thousands, like some gambling addicts owe.

FGS - he fell £20 behind????? - he would have had at least one arrears letter but probably ignored it, I bet he had enough to fit his pipe with a bit of Condor.

Why should people who pay their taxes and council tax support those that can't be bothered.

if every 1 in country refused to pay it they would not be a thing they could do its just another thatcher trick end of the day and us fools pay it

Ok you go ahead and stop paying it and lose every service it pays for. Do you think bin men work for free? Say goodbye to that and hello to rats. But wait, then you'd whinge about that. Then you'd complain nobody was removing your waste. Pay the damn money and shut up.

but we are being made to pay more "counci tax" n coucil services ie....nurses.. fire service, police refuse collection, general street clening, grass cutting, libraries swimmingpools are all being minimised to the raw... but yet councillors/mps for the borough are getting increases

Barnsley Council are nothing more than Tories with red rosettes.
Amazes me how a council like Leeds can defer bedroom tax payments by a cheeky loophole for the most vulnerable people directly affected but BMBC can not.
Where all in this together my arse, BMBC and Labour will never do anything to help the most vulnerable and needy in our communities.

UKIP and BNP for me all the way now.
