Supermarket Build Put Back For Fourth Time

Wednesday June 26 2013

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

THE opening date of a planned Tesco store has been put back - for the fourth time.

The Hoyland supermarket, on Market Street, will now open in May next year - more than a year after it original planned opening date of this spring.

Little work has been done on the site, which formerly housed Market Street Primary School, since testing was done in February last year.

There had been speculation among local people that the opening had been put back to 2020, but those rumours were dismissed by a spokesperson for the supermarket chain.

More than 140 new jobs will be created when it opens after being developed for Tesco by Litton Properties.

"A developer will be on site next month," said a Tesco spokesman. "If all goes well then we're hoping that we'll be able to start work at the start of next year with a view to finishing in spring."

I was hoping it had been shelved altogether. Hoyland town centre has improved lately and I believe another Tesco will make trading harder for local business when its already tough enough!
I will carry on shopping locally, without the need for Tesco thanks.

I will defiantly be using tescos when it arrives, Hoyland town centre is not somewhere I have time to shop so have to go to wath either for Tesco or morrisons. Think people need to start moving with the times rather than living in the past most areas now have a supermarket where prices are cheaper and all under 1 roof.

I don't think this project will get going. I still can't forget the problems that caused the school on the site to close. They never got to the bottom of that & I think they will find some environmental problems that make it too expensive to proceed.

Jesus wept another one? Couldn't Barnsley have a Sainsburys or another nice supermarket instead of yet another crappy Tesco, and before people jump straight in with 'ooooohhh people round ere can't afford Sainsburys' they've built stores in some absolute dumps where deprivation is even higher than in Barnsley, sick to death of having to go to Huddersfield because Barnsleys populated with bloody Tescos and Morrissons.

There's Asda at bottom of town - much cheaper than Sainsbury's Tescos or Morrisons

if tesco dont want the site they sould sell it on to aldi or asda they keep trimming down the edges its ok for some people like cath who can afford to keep shopping in hoyland the price of food in hoyland is just going up and up and its about time it had competition to work with

I can't wait to shop in the new Tesco. I am absolutly sick of the poor service in the Coop staff more interested in having a conversation with everybody instead of getting on with thier jobs and cutting down the que at the check out. Everytime I go in I think this will be the last time.We need some competion to wake them up.

How many more supermarkets do we need !!!.......... it's not fair on the poor "corner shop" trader's trying to make a living, longer opening hours, online shopping, and now B&Q closing to make way for Sainsburys Supermarket............. Us Barnsley folk must be doing something right, i've never known has many supermarkets !!!
