Three Barnsley Lads Praised By Police

Boys commended Boys commended

THREE young boys have received a commendation from after they helped police catch a man believed to be responsible for a robbery in the town centre.

Lewis Sutton, Michael Heavey and Connor Asquith all received their commendations in front of the Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Ken Richardson, Mayoress Mrs Nadia Richardson and Commissioner Shaun Wright.

The boys then had a guided tour of the police station by Chief Superintendent Andy Brooke, where they were able to see the police horses and a police dog in action.

They even got to visit the cells and see the CCTV room, which the police used to catch the suspect.

The boys, aged 11, 13 and 14, witnessed the incident on Saturday, May 18 on Mayday Green in the town centre.

A 28-year-old man was allegedly punched in the face, knocking him to the ground. His wallet was stolen which contained £250.

The boys made sure the 28-year-old man was okay, before following the suspect to the Barnsley Interchange. They alerted a security guard at the Interchange of the incident after seeing the suspect get into a taxi.

The security guard passed the information onto the police who used CCTV to identify and locate the taxi. Police stopped the taxi and a 26-year-old man was arrested and later charged with assault, robbery and possession of cannabis.

"I'm so pleased I have been able to present these commendations to the boys, to thank them for their remarkable efforts in helping us catch the suspect," Chief Superintendent Andy Brooke said.

"The boys acted with compassion and courage and showed a great sense of community spirit. The commendations are the highest recognition I can award."

absolutely fantastic boys, nice to know that not all youngsters are pains tho maybe the parents wud disagree at times lol) to check that the person who was attacked was ok, and then to follow the attacker, with no thought to their own safety, and to alert someone as to the attackers whereabouts. brilliant!... you deserve more than a tour of barnsley police station... maybe barnsley fc would offer you a day at their ground. also well done to the parents for bringing up your children to think of others

Well done to the lads but isn't publishing their names and whereabouts on WAB a bit irresponsible, reprisals and all that?
