Police in Barnsley have launched a new campaign to crack down on burglary and are advising residents with standard locks fitted to most UPVC doors to get them replaced.

Police have recently discovered that some offenders are attacking these locks by using two methods known as ‘snapping’ and ‘bumping.’

Lock snapping is where pressure is applied to the lock, causing it to snap at its weakest point and giving criminals access to the locking mechanism to open the door.

Bumping a lock is where the locking mechanism is tricked into thinking the correct key has been inserted into the lock.

Police are encouraging residents to consider replacing these locks with snap safe locks available from locksmiths and DIY retailers.

DCI Sean Middleton of South Yorkshire Police said: “If you have a UPVC door you need to read our advice leaflet, check your locks and if necessary change them.

“The burglary rate across South Yorkshire is at its lowest in 30 years, but we can not afford to be complacent, don’t become a victim of crime, check and replace your locks.”
